Marines vs Eldar apocalypse battle

Got together with a couple of friends today for a small apocalypse battle. My salamanders were allied with "Blood Dragons", a chapter that apparently aren't Blood Angel successors. Honest. We were taking on the slippery eldar at 3000pts a side, so I'll cover the events that had a major effect on the game.

We bid the lowest time, and so won first turn. Most of the action was where the death company deployed on the "right"; although there was a chaplain and assault squad on the other side of the board, there was also a squad of rending clowns hiding nearby, so my chaplain didn't get stuck in. This turn the death company charged forwards, finding themselves just out of assault range. Lascanons blew up a couple of war walkers, and a smoke screen was dropped in front of most of the eldar on the "left" They responded with an orbital bombardment! Most of a command squad were blown away, as was half a salamander tactical squad. Worst of all, the ld10 commander hit the dirt and was pinned. The banshees charged the death company, killing two marines for the loss of one banshee.

Assault terminators teleport in on the right, and a whole load of AP4 blows away the dire avengers. Combat is extremely disappointing, with the entire death company being wiped out in the two rounds for only one kill. D Canons kill two terminators, and the autarch charges in and kills another while dodging the return attacks. On the left the dreadnought is destroyed and the assault marines are punished for advancing, being wiped out with shooting and a charge from the warp spiders. The spiders hit and run, leaving the chaplain alone. There was a farseer on both flanks, and their doom and guide combo proved extremely irritating throughout the game. My nice salamander mini firebase got blown away by concentrated fire this turn, leaving just one marine with a missile launcher.

Turn three, and things start going right for the marines! On the left the chaplain wipes out the warp spiders in one round of combat. On the right a tactical squad squishes the autarch, and the chaplain finally gets his act together and kills all the banshees.

Eldar retribution is swift though, the chaplain taken out by D canons and a terminator killed by the farseer. Shining spears charge into a tactical squad, which survive and hold. In the middle fire dragons destroy the predator, which had been steadily pumping out lascanon shots with surprisingly rapidly decreasing accuracy. Say that out loud why don't you.

On the right an extremely battered dreadnought and more tactical marines charge the shining spears, which are destroyed. Tanks and land speeders are hastily repositioned. On the left, the chaplain makes a lone charge towards the eldar firebase... Eldar also repositioned rapidly, and in a display of accurate shooting destroyed a land speeder and dreadnought. This turned out to be crucial; the marine's second strategem was "vital objective", with the objective in the building at the back counting for two. If the dreadnought or land speeder had surived the marines would have claimed victory, however the Eldar won with 4 objectives to 3.

This game was brilliant fun, and one of the most visually appealing games I've played in a while. I've got plans for another apocalypse game next week, I hope it's as close as this one.

Wowza, one reply! Since that one person was interested in another report, here it is! I myself was using orks in this one, however Brimstone's Blood Dragons were involved so I think it's still fine to put it here.

Today's battle; here's the battlefield, and a shot of my 3000 point army;

And deployment! You may notice I've not actually deployed my entire force, I had a cunning plan...

I sneakily aquired turn 1, bidding 5 minutes for deployment as I knew I wasn't going to be putting everything on the board. To my irritation, however, before my first turn two minefields were placed in front of my army, marked by blue dice. Undettered, I sprung the trap! Using flank march and careful planning I brought the stompa, "exterminator command tank" and hellhound on behind enemy lines, while a unit of burna boys headed towards an isolated objective guarded by just one small combat squad. The stompa unleashed its fury on the death company, who were reduced from 11 to just 2. The exterminator tore through the rear armour of the Baal predator, destroying it, and a unit of dire avengers were also destroyed.

The retaliation was mixed in its effectiveness. Shooting at the dread mob was very effective, destroying a dread and a kan, and a looted russ was blown up by the falcon. The farseer and lone death company's charge on the stompa was largely ineffective though, and the last black armoured beakie was crushed to a pulp.

Turn two, and in the centre the large ork mob kills two harlequins with burna fire while the burna boys in the far left drag down the last beakie and claim the objective. A dread and a kan split from the dread mob and pulled the speeding wave serpent out of the sky, killing all but two of the fire dragons inside.

The stompa's rampage continued, Beakies guarding a central objective and two war walkers falling to its guns. Charging a third, it initiated the most one sided combat ever.

Shooting kills two burna boys claiming the isolated objective, while assault canon fire stuns the demolisher next to the dread mob. The farseer, having survived hand to hand combat with a stompa, goes for an easier target and slices the hellhound apart in combat. The chaplain (formerly leading the death company) and the harlequins charged the large mob of boys in the center, winning the combat but losing two harlequins.

http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/3235/orksvsweedinessapocalypms7.jpg

In the far left, the burna boys hide deep in the forest, but are foiled at the last minute by a sneaky land speeder joining a war walker and claiming the objective from them. In the near left the dread mob fails to destroy the land speeder and wraithlord, despite fire support from the stompa, and with the big dread falling to assault canon fire in turn three the objective is claimed by a wraithlord on its last wound.

Far center, and there's really no contest to the stompa claiming the objective. Although the farseer smashed the exterminator to pieces as well as the hellhound he couldn't scratch the stompa, however he did survive combat with it again! Near center was a far closer affair. The warboss crushed the harlequins with contemptuous ease, but the chaplain won the combat. Despite the warboss' leadership the unit tried to run, but were killed by the chaplain. The chaplain then charged the shoota boys, and after a round of neither side hurting the other the chaplain was crushed by a power fist just in time for the orks to consolidate close enough to the objective to claim it.

On the right a sentinel managed to get into combat with the surviving dire avengers in turn 3, protecting it from shooting and allowing it to claim the objective. On the other objective the kommandos were blasted to pieces by the falcon, and the grots couldn't stop it from claiming the objective. Result; 3 objectives per side; draw.

Those are both some beautiful battle reports. It's awesome to see visuals with a play by play. They tell the story completely; you can hear "There was some terrain here and shooting went like this" but it doesn't make as much sense 'til you see it. Similarly, telling it all with pics won't work either for reasons that would be pretty obvious when I mime them to you.

Beautiful job, and keep it coming.

Sorry for interrupting, those were some really awesome Battle Reports, and wonderfully painted models (I liked the scale theme on your Salamanders). But your friend Brimstone... He wouldn't happen to be THE Brimstone of Warseer.com would he? Quite possibly the coolest MOD in existence, and most cryptic Keeper of the Rumor Mill? Just wondering...

Good reports, can't wait to hear some more!

Its really nice to see replies to a post this old. I have only come on the browse for this report myself to show other people why I enjoyed playing 40k.

I am the guy with the Eldar, and for all three of us who have played that game are now all none participants in the world of Warhammer.

Its a shame, but the cost of time to paint these fully painted armies is too great that our real lives in work and for one, his Masters at Uni are too great, with the lack of community not there anymore at the Newcastle branch of GW. Its a shame that we all live at least 200miles away from each other too!

Thanks for looking through the old posts Coldshadow, at least we can all sleep in the knowledge that what we had done is appreciated, even now :)
