corai
Hi there B&C, long time no post. Some people may reember the last time I ducked my head in was to get some opions over some steam punk marine concepts. well, the idea kind of died in the water. I've still got the moulds to make a squad or two of them to accompany an inquisitor in the future but for the time being, I've been working on a more traditional army. For the past month I've been working on getting a 1500 point Iron snake foce to a table top quality (After 6 attempts I just want a fully painted marine army for once!). I'm almost finished withthe first 1500 and it occured to me I'd neglected to post any of the work here on B&C so It thought I'd throw up a big post now with all the progress on the army. It all follows the rogue trader and Dan Abnett descriptions of the colour scheme and squad markings with the exception of the chapter symbol which I cahnged from blue to black to give the models a colder, more monochrome look. So on to the (many!) pics: Tac Squad 1: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/tac7.jpg and squad 2 (boy those tactical sergeant sure do like to point don't they :)) http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/tac11.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/tac10.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/tac9.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/tac8.jpg Next up are a whole bunch of devastators: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/dev4.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/dev8.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/dev6.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/dev12.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/dev9.jpg And an assault squad: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/assault5.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/assault4.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/assault3.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/assault2.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/assault7.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/assault6.jpg
corai
And most recently I finished my first notable/veteran squad. they're short an apothecary who will be on his way when the rest of them are ready to be painted (I want to productionline as much of the white armour as possible) http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/notable10.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/notable12.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/notable13.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/notable16.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/notable17.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/notable19.jpg Wow that was a lot of pictures. I've got another notable squad, the aforementioned apothecaries and a librarien to paint before the army's done, but I can knock out a squad a day to this standard so hopefulyl will have them finished before the end of next week. then I can get cracking on all the drop pods I've got coming for the alternate list. Thanks to anyone who struggled through all those pics Thanks corai
Pulse
Lovely looking Iron Snakes you have there mate, obviously spent a lot time painting these up and it shows. Love the use of the sea lances as well for the vets. :)
Lycan
Very NIcely Done!! Out of curiosity you using traits with your army for gaming purposes? anything else coming besides the apothcaries?
corai
Thanks :) Very NIcely Done!!Out of curiosity you using traits with your army for gaming purposes? anything else coming besides the apothcaries? I use trust your battle brothers (IIRC, the one that allows true grit?)too to represent how adept they seem to be with handling both sealance and bolters interchangably. Embarassingly, the disadvantages tend to change depending on what I want the list to be able to do, but I try to keep the fluffy advantage traits in each list thanks Corai

corai
Thanks for the encouragement guys :P very nice.. was following the progress on your warseer thread... can't wait to see the characters from the novels. (make sure you convert that librarian guy + priad! ) After I'm done wtth the infantry army, and the drop pod assault I'm planning to re-read the book and really go to town making Priad and Damocles as well as Petrok (the libby) and posibley Seydon (chapter Master). But I want to be able to give them a lot of attnetion o have put them of until I've worked through the bulk of the force. Impressive marines you have there! I'm considering starting a Snakes army myself - where did you get the lances? He took rod and put SM combat blades on the end. Darth Potato got it in one (but then I'm betting he saw the WIPs on warseer ;). The sea lances are lengths of aluminium rod with a marine combat knife stuck in the end (handle was whittled down to act as a pin to strenghten the join) and then covered in purity seals. Yes, awesome marines, I always like when it is an unheralded chapter that is done, and they are well painted, good work, hope to see some vehicles, dreads termis soon After the next notable squad and a librarian I've got 2 dreads, a termi squad and 5 drop pods to assemble and paint ;) thanks corai

Capt. Kenaz
I admittingly have not read the Iron Snakes books, but why does the assault sgt. have a dev. squad mark on his shoulder pad? Other than that nit-pic, your models are great, and I especially love the vets, there poses beat all the rest!
corai
I admittingly have not read the Iron Snakes books, but why does the assault sgt. have a dev. squad mark on his shoulder pad? from what I can tell, the IS aren't divided into specialist squads and as such, don't have dev, assault or tactical markings. Their left shoudler is always the chapter icon and the right is the nsame iof the squad and some design. To keep it simple (and within the realms of my limited freehand skill) I chose to just make the design a differant geometric chape on the shoulder pads behind a name plate. There are triangles, squares and rectangular strips littered throughout the army so far. I've got a couple of dreads to work on, but neithe of them wil have the TWLC and DCCW combo that Autolochus does so I might just have to include him in name only thanks Corai

Rossco
I think they are really nicely done, if I have one criticism it would be that the chapter symbol could do with "beefing up" a bit, it just looks a little to thin to me. Other than that a really fantastic job and good use of parts.
Pulse
Why would the chapter symbol need beefing up? Haven't you seen their symbol? It is spot on.

Not a slate on the painters skills, more a slate of the badge itself, they look great it's just a personal thing ! some of the chapter badges are better than others, kind of like the space sharks, i love the chapter but dislike the chapter badge, so when doghouse did his and stylised the badge I felt it was a good thing
Capt. Kenaz
Thanks for the clarification on the squad symbols! I really like the main armor color scheme, is it just bolt gun meta over a black base coat with maybe a black ink wash ? Looks great!! What did you use to get the great metal finish?? corai
I really like the main armor color scheme, is it just bolt gun meta over a black base coat with maybe a black ink wash ? Looks great!! What did you use to get the great metal finish?? The recipe for the silver armour is: _undercoat chaos black _basecoat P3 Pig Iron. The trick here is not to shake or mix the bottle of paint. The P3 metallics tend to sperate quite easily in the pot. Usually a bad thing but with Pig Iron, the darker shade drifts to the top. You should get a colour so dark it's almost like metallic black _drybrush with boltgun metal _highlight with boltgun metal:mithril silver 1:1 _extreme highlight with mithrilsilver _wash with Tamiya smoke Hope this helps Thanks corai
