Iron Snakes

the speeders look a bit boring...

maybe add red/white to the back fins to break up the straight metallic look

I was unsure about adding too much red into the speeders. Most speeder schemes don't tend to take the shoulderpad rims into the scheme, sticking more the armour colour (and trim/shoulderpad field colour where appropriate). I had initially thought about painting the back fins completely white, maybe replacing the two white rectangles on the spoiler that are already white, with a bit fo red. It would give me a decent flat surface on the side of the fin/spoiler to paint the chapter symbol on as well, what do you think?

Why are the barrels of the Assault Cannons on the Speeders upside down?

Becasue that was the easiest way I could figure to attach the palstic ravenwing assault cannons to the landspeeder. I quite like th reverse nature of it bearing in mind how they are mounted below something anyway -_-

Thanks

  • 2 weeks later...

Well I finally found the inspiration to get the second half of squad skypio painted and ready for action at this weekends tourney.

Again as I finished them I was struck by how fantastic he plastic terminator kit is and how much I enjoy using it. It's only a shae that the Iron snakes only have access to the 10 suits or I'd totally paint up a deathwing/lysanderwing style termi heavy army of these guys.

well I agree with you.. you transfered the chapter's colour scheme "correctly" to the speeder.. But from my point of view it doesn't really work with the plain boltgun metal because the whole surface is too flat..

my 3 suggestions to break up the plain look would be:

1.either add decals that make the look stand out more

I'm thinking about those army marking decals from the marine vehicle decal sheet.. you know like the skull within the white circle or something

2. add bits like purity seals, terminator honors and those scrolls to the side

2. maybe add white with a diagonal red stripe to the side of the top spoiler thingy to make it stand out a lil more and make it look kinda like heraldry

a red half aquila would work too

the ideas are not really solid and if you are satisfied with the look then just leave it as it is... the army has a great overall look and that was just a tiny detail that concerned me a little :P

greetings

the new terms looking good btw =)

Just want to see what a brilliant collection of models here – all beautifully painted and imaginatively based.

Apologies if this has already been asked (just skimmed the whole topic but couldn't see it), can you give me a rundown on how you painted the boltgun/black armour and how you achieved the reddish gold?

Cheers

No problem, the recipes are in here somewhere but I'll repeat them here:

(all over chaos black undercoat)

silver:

-basecoat P3 Pig Iron (the key is not shaking the bottle to mix the paint, this will give you a very dark, almost metallic black colour at the top of the bottle as both colours seperate)

-drybrush boltgun metal

-highlight/blend boltgun metal:mithril silver 1:1

-extreme highlight with mithril silver

-wash with tamiya smoke

gold:

-basecoat bestial brown

-paint P3 brass balls on leaving bestial brown in the recesses (conversely here the brass balls wants a vigourous shaking before use)

-highlight with P3 radiant platinum:brass balls 1:1

-extreme highlight with radiant platinum

-wash with chestnut ink

-for the very textured parts (like eagles wings tec) was again with tamiya smoke

hope this helps

Thanks

Long time no update. I got the army finished in time to get it to the Yorkshire Open Tournament Heats (where they won best army and overal winner :)) and am now working on the 5 drop pods I need for the army I want to take to the finals.

2 down, 3 to go. This is the first pod I painted. I thought it would be too dull without some more white in there but I think it came off looking too white. All that extra white also took an age to paint. I think I'll keep this as the command pod but paint the rest in the scheme of the next pod.

And the slightly more toned down pod:

The interiors will get painted after the tourney date (which is fast approaching) but any suggestions on colours for the interior would be gratefully appreciated

thanks

Corai

Concerning the drop pods, if you take into consideration the effect of entering the atmostphere there should be a particular amount of outter shell scorching especially on the white. Adding some would lessen the overall white effect quite nicely perhaps.

I was originally planning to try blending some dark brown/black up from the base into the main pod, but decided agaisnt it when the finished colour of the pods body itself was sufficiently dark, but I guess you're right about needing to add some scorching to the fins (and white bits on the command pod) I'm just not sure I'm up to the task of blending black onto white without toally screwing it up. I'll have to try and find some plasticard to practive on first.

one question, why do iron snakes only have 10 suits of termie armor????

I have no idea, it's just something that is specified in Brothers of the Snake

Thanks

Corai

A bit more frantic painting and I've got 2 more pods finished (just 1 to go). As you can see I opted for the Dheneb stone approach for the interiors. It looks a little Star Trek but I think it fits the colour scheme of the rest of the army better.

I've not painted the engines glowing yet as I'm not sure whether I'm going to add some epxanding foam under it or not.

Hi corai i really like the look of the army really balanced coulour scheme especially the use of deep silvers and white. Well done on winning the heat just out of curiosity which heat was it because i qualified from wakefield myself so i'll see you at the finals a week on sunday.

just to let you know gaming wise the winner of my heat is using a 5 carnafex list with 2 hive tyrants and lots of gribbiles as it the army that came 3rd i think. 3 or 4 eldar armys with 3 fire prisms each and most of the rest of the army on jet bikes, a necron army, my mates chaos, an ork list and the rest where marines including my blood ravens.

just thought you might like to know what the cometition is.

all the best

thanks for the info. I qualified from the Leeds Heat along with a rhino rush nurgle army, 2 giant squiggoth toting feral ork army, a kroot merc army that will either be in combat by turn 2 or have lost entirely, blood angles, necrons, orks and 2 other pretty standard marine armies

i take back what i said on the stronghold, the dheneb looks really great.

Have you painted the one with the guy firing out of it yet?

technically the crashed one is that one. I just haven't painted the firing marine for it yet

thanks
