Eiric Hakon
Hi everyone Over the past few days I started to make a marine in mk3 armour, well here he is (still very WIP) The torso <Deleted> see below The backpack http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x226/Eiric_Hakon/PICT0297.jpg The torso and helm <Deleted> see below And the bolter http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x226/Eiric_Hakon/PICT0288.jpg C&C welcome Edit: original pics deleted (updates below) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/131385-wip-mk3-armour/ Share on other sites
Liltom
Quite messy work. I mean, anybody can avoid getting fluff stuck to greenstuff if they make the effort <_< The bolter is very wiggly- It appears to have been rushed greatly, and been given little thought or attention. And please, the mold line on the helmet! Argh.... I'm sorry, but I think the work could do with a lot more time and effort. FerrumIgnatus
@Liltom: He said it was still very WIP. Although it looks like a mess, he has the basic shape and design, so I'll bet we're gonna see an update that shows more detailed work. <_< Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/131385-wip-mk3-armour/#findComment-1513463 Share on other sites
jugglingfool
While there may be a newer improved WIP pic coming. Right now it just isn't that much or that impressive. If you want comments on your WIP post 'em, but seriously shouldn't there be more than jsut some very rough work that took an hour or less before you post it for comments? Liltom
We shall see with regards to updates. I still think if at this stage the OP is willing to get fluff stuck to it it is not going to finish up too great :( Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/131385-wip-mk3-armour/#findComment-1513738 Share on other sites
Eiric Hakon
ooops....i didn't notice the fluff.....there's no excuse for that, my apologies..... I'll bet we're gonna see an update that shows more detailed work. Very true @jugglingfool: The work is very rough, I was hoping to get comments on the general shape before refining it. with any luck these updates will help me redeem myself Torso and helm http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x226/Eiric_Hakon/PICT0288-1.jpg The helm didn't look very good in that pic so i attacked it with a file, not sure it looks that much better Torso and helm two http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x226/Eiric_Hakon/PICT0289.jpg the 'tip' looks a bit off to me though, what do you think? Eiric Hakon
I've started work on the legs, I'm intending to add some decoration (trim on the cod piece) on them soon Legs front http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x226/Eiric_Hakon/PICT0292.jpg Legs side http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x226/Eiric_Hakon/PICT0293.jpg I've also done some work on the bolter making it neater... Bolter side http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x226/Eiric_Hakon/PICT0294.jpg Bolter top http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x226/Eiric_Hakon/PICT0297-1.jpg ...and straighter, but it's not quite finished yet Edit: cod piece is closer to 90 degrees now than it is in the picture above Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/131385-wip-mk3-armour/#findComment-1514129 Share on other sites
Liltom
Improving greatly! The bolter looks alot tidier now! The GS work could still do with some tidying, but it is looking alot better now. Eiric Hakon
:) Thank you for your kind words sir! Agreed, the GS work could be tidied up. I'll attack the bolter with a file once it dries, the helm might be slightly more difficult, but it will be done. I decided to 'dry fit' the parts to see how they looked assembled http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x226/Eiric_Hakon/PICT0298.jpg I think that the legs look a touch...skinny...I think I'll add plasticard to the front of the thighs and make the soles of the greaves a touch thicker. C&C welcome as always Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/131385-wip-mk3-armour/#findComment-1514166 Share on other sites
Eiric Hakon
Unfortunately, plasticard was practically impossible to add to the thighs (the cod piece got in the way) so I 'bulked up' the thighs with GS, I'll post a pic once I've introduced them to a file... Eiric Hakon
I haven't managed to file the legs down yet (the GS is not dry yet), but I started to question if it looked right, so I'm going to ask: do the thighs look about the right size? http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x226/Eiric_Hakon/PICT0301.jpg http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x226/Eiric_Hakon/PICT0302.jpg Do they? Don't they? should I remove the GS or file it down once it dries? Thanks! P.S. I haven't managed to file the helm down more yet Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/131385-wip-mk3-armour/#findComment-1514373 Share on other sites
SpudWhitman
I think it was a good idea to bulk out the legs like you did, because the helmet is bulkier than your average marine's, so carrying this over to other parts of him without going over the top would be the way to go, if you ask me. FerrumIgnatus
Tip: In order to get a "smooth" GS surface, you should add some water on your sculpting tool/finger and gently smoothen the GS. Works fine for me! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/131385-wip-mk3-armour/#findComment-1514597 Share on other sites
Cheex
It's a good start, but make sure you mix your GS completely. I can still see quite a bit of yellow that isn't mixed in properly - this may cause some problems by not drying completely. As already stated, wetting your sculpting tool (another tip: it often helps to use some kind of lubricant, like vaseline or vegetable oil...just be sure to clean it off before painting!) may help achieve smoother results. Lastly, just keep hammering away at this project and you will improve :) We've already seen an improvement from the start, so keep it up. Yodhrin
As suggested before; use some lubrication when sculpting. I find it best to use water when you're working the rough shape, keep the tool moist the whole time, but don't have it dripping with water, just enough to coat the surface of the tool, it's better to re-moisten it every few seconds than slop water all over the model. Once you have the shape worked out, apply a little vaseline or (cheap)olive oil and gently work it smooth, and finally apply a little oil to your finger to give it a final smooth out. Eiric Hakon
^_^ Thanks! I think it's the angle of the photo, it's not that high in real life... Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/131385-wip-mk3-armour/#findComment-1515345 Share on other sites
Eiric Hakon
I hope this isn't thread necromancy..... I haven't made allot of progress....work and all....I was wondering If it would be a good idea to add a neck ring like the one the DG marine below has: http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x226/Eiric_Hakon/DeathGuard1-1.jpg What do you all think? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/131385-wip-mk3-armour/#findComment-1519677 Share on other sites
SpudWhitman
It's your own thread, so there's no need at all to worry about the timeframe between posts, simply because they're your updates to us. No risk of threadomancy whatsoever. I think a neck ring or extended collar like that would look great. It would be tricky to make the two distinct layers to it like on that one. Using a spare torso back you can cut the collar from it and attach it to the front of this marine, and fill in any gaps with greenstuff. Or make the collar from scratch. I look forward to seeing more. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/131385-wip-mk3-armour/#findComment-1519716 Share on other sites
Bigger-than-Jesus
Look at Levett's tut on mkIII heads, it cuts a lot of time and effort from making mkIII helmets. It also looks pretty similar to what you've done too. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/131385-wip-mk3-armour/#findComment-1519779 Share on other sites
Eiric Hakon
I was thinking of making the external neck ring using the meathod of making the external neck ring using this method. I think I'll use a Mk8 chestplate on the next marine and file the front down.... If anyone can think of anything better I'm open to suggestions. GS would be an option for the internal neck ring but I'm slightly reluctant to use more....Card maybe? @Bigger-than-Jesus: I've seen that tutorial, I'd have done that if I had seen it before starting and if i had andy Mk6 heads left.... Eiric Hakon
I've removed the GS on the legs so I can glue the armoured bands in place I'll add a picture once I've got the bands in place. Do the bands go all the way down the leg with the plates on top or is it something different? Thanks! Eiric Hakon
Another question (sorry) How do the bands actualy fit together? Is it two bands connected by a third band on top of them or something different? killqboyz
Hi just came over to this forum. Eric I have to say that helmet looks almost like the one I made a while back for a Pre-Heresy World Eater marine I'd like to ask if you were ever a member at the Relic forums. I like it.
