My Nightlords Breakaway warband

Recommended Posts

Greetings fellow chaos marines, tis been a lengthy 2 years since I last posted on these boards, most will probably not remember me. Anyway, after a lengthy break from 40k, i've decided to return to the game and im planning to start up a a proper army (my last incarnations were just 500 pts >.<), and after reading Lord OF The Night, i been greatly influenced by Sahaal's mentality(for my army, and myself as well ;) ) of what the nightlords should've been, so my fluff will be orientated around the 17th Nightlord's Company (That number fine ? I don't mind taking any number , who has the similar idealogy of Sahaal, flees the legion with his company after the death of the night haunter and once Krieg Acerbus took over the legion (Is he the supreme leader of the nightlords now ?), as he does not wish to follow the whole nightlords having fallen into decadence finding pleasure in sadism and so forth...

My question now is, fluff wise would this seem possible and work ?

As for the rules, after buying the new codex last week i realised my initial ideas would have to be thrown out the window without all the veteran skills that i could get anymore... so I was wondering, based on my fluff of my army, a quarter of the warband suffers from hysteria, fits etc. going mad basically, things which would heighten their battle frenzy, and just wondering if using khorne berserker rules for these guys (who based on fluff have no worship of god), like wise another group of troops have their minds completely blanked out and have as such become more impervious to harm(mark of nurgle or tzeentch) .... Would this be alright ?

Yeah, that would be fine if I played against your army, and it suits fluff-wise. Just as long as you explain what things are.

Also, don't just throw out the option of the Puritan Night Lords. There are a few of us that have Night Lord armies themed around that, and it works fine. You just have to use a lot of counts-as, I've found... Trust me, there are many of us that seek to purify our Legion, and remove the taint of Chaos from within it, bringing it back to what the Night Haunter originally planned it to be.

Thanks for the feedback

Puritan Nightlords as in... just using models with no marks of chaos or daemonic stuff ?

Brother Nihm: Thanks for the link to that, quite insightful info on the NL... pity theres quite a few dissapointing defeats in there :)

Oh and I read through your blog thing, and i noticed that your "Angel Of Nostramo" chosen marine is very much what I had in mind for my Commander of the warband :P

Puritan as in, they stay true to the original teachings of the Night Haunter. Chaos is ok as a tool, according to the teachings, so I just wouldn't take either Obliterators, Daemon Princes or Cult Units. Icons should be fine, as that can represent just a temporary pact with the Power. Most however, myself included, choose to go "ultra-Puritan", as I'll call it, and try not to touch anything relating to the Gods.
My present campaign is partly fueld by this very thing with Nightlords groups representing both Sahaal and Acerbus. We of the 13th company have found ourselves fighting both the foolish followers of the False emperor and Kreigs foul Sadists. The Return of Sahaal as a dramatis personae has helped considerably in moving the storyline. (In it he is gathering strength and finding like minded Night Lords)

Alright, thank you all for the feedback. I've come up with a general fluff for this breakaway company.

Summary:

Whence the Night Haunter left Nostramo to join the crusade, as the world fell back into chaos, a group of vigilantes emerged, continuing the work of the Night Haunter. As time passed by, the vigilante group grew in size as the world sank back down to its original state of disharmony. As the crusade continued, the Night Haunter requested new recruits from Nostramo and as such, the strongest vigalantes were drafted into the legion. Most notably Naitsyrk who became the leader of vigilantes after half the order were massacred at the betrayal at Noctrinal . It was he who slowly climbed the ranks within the Night Lords, to captain of the 17th company. As the crusade progressed, the Night haunter felt a certain nostalgia from these marines and so he he made sure the vigilantes were drafted into the 17th company, which later came to be known as the "Angels Of Nostramo".

As the betrayal of the Emperor became apparant and the legion began tearing up from within, the Angels Of Nostramo, stood firmly by their primarch alongside the talon master Zso Sahaal rather than lose themselves into the pleasure of murder and sadism. As a result at the death of the Night Haunter, Captain Naitsyrk aided Zso Sahaal in recapturing the Corona Nox at the cost of being ambushed by Krieg who backstabbed Naitsyrk who valiently fought after being mortally wounded. As a reusult Krieg ordered his mortally wounded body to be fitted into a dreadnought for all of eternity. However the Sorceror, Zaretheroth intervened and managed to get a hold of Naitsyrk's body and together with the 17th company flee the main legion.

To save the captain's life, Zaretheroth made a pact with the Chaos gods and as a result the captain was saved at a great price, the entire company was cursed to forever roam the galaxy, to (haven't yet figured out what the curse is yet :P ). As such, Naitsyrk leads the Angels of Nostramo till this day, under a flag of hate denouncing the false emperor and the chaos gods who have cursed them, wage war and everyone and all on a path of self destruction knowing that only through death will their curse break. Although death is imminent for Naitsyrk and the Angels of Nostramo, they still long to be reunited with their former legion under the true creed of their Primarch, for then will their souls be truly at rest.

Units i'll choose to use in the army :

- Chaos Lord/ Sorceror

- Chosen

- Terminators

- Possessed (Angels) ? <--- Good idea fluff wise for NL ?

- CSM (with some icons representing the effects of the curse)

- Bikers

- Chaos Raptors

- Havocs

- Predator/ Vindicator / Land Raider

That sounds like a really good idea, although I'd leave the part about the Corona Nox. I'd probably change it to your commander challenging Acerbus when he moved to take over the Legion, saying that the Legion should stay loyal to the teachings of the Haunter, and Acerbus cut him down.

Also, good idea with the Possessed!

(haven't yet figured out what the curse is yet B) )

If you're looking for a curse that involves wandering consider the curse God put on Cain in the bible, to wander restlessly, an outcast and a vagabond. Or the curse of the black pearl from pirates of the caribean, where the pirates must wander hungry, thirsty and perpetualy unsatisfied but spared from death, as you want your lord to be.

davidren2401 : Thanks for those suggestions, i recon ill pick the idea of god's curse on cain (why didn't i think of that earlier ? lol). Aight once i get my the rest of my eldar force painted up ill start painting up these fellas.

Ah sorry for the double post but...

In terms of modelling a daemon prince, if i keep the dp base, but instead put a lord who is quite buffed up in power armour, wearing robes (hooded), large claw like gauntlets AND has wings... would i still be allowed to field him as a DP ?

This is my NL deamon prince. He has ancient raptor power armor which gives him his 3+/4+ invuln (MOT), with reactive shin guards to suspend him upside down or at bad angles. His power glaive is so long he has to fly higher than most raptors to use it at it's full effect (Monstrous Creature)and is brutally effective with it (Warptime). He has an ancient hand flamer handed down to him from the age of the heresy (Wind of Chaos).
