Just Finished "Wolf's Honor" by Lee Lightner

Ok, so I just finished Wolf's Honor and it was excellent. The ending was epic if a little bit rushed. I think Lee Lightner is actually a much better writer than Jonathan King and am glad they finished the story. Haegr was particularly good in this book and I was very sad to watch him die even though it was heroic. My one complaint is that the whole point of this series of books was initially to answer one question: How Ragnar became Wolf Lord without ever having been a grey hunter. At the end of this book it describes the eventual death of Berek Thunderfist and also says that Ragnar had regained his honor and was no longer exiled to the Wolfblade but does that mean Berek put him straight into the Wolf Guard after being in the wolfblade?

Oh yeah and how cool was the 13th company in this book? That secret mission that they have. Yeah that was awesome. I love them tlaking about how Russ was always getting drunk and losing his spear.

Yeah, it's a pretty good read isn't it? I certainly enjoyed it. As for not answering questions and not being the end to the saga it proported to be, well, did anyone ever say it was going to answer the "how did Ragnar become WL despite not being a Grey Hunter"? I don't recall. In saying that it was an end to the saga, I think that was just an end to the saga written in these books. Ragnar becoming a member of Berek's wolfguard and after various adventures (one assumes) becoming Wolf Lord, is another saga in itself. Dim recollections of bits of fluff from 2nd Ed codexes and old WDs needs to be brushed up upon methinks...!

... I think Lee Lightner is actually a much better writer than Jonathan King....

Just to be @nal, it was Bill / William King. And in the case of this book, I think you're right. Not so sure about the last one...

William, dangit, you're right.

As to the was the question ever asked. It was in the second or third book where Ragnar and his unit were kind of stuck in the middle of no where and pinned down and a member of his unit as him how it was that he was never a grey hunter. Ragnar sat them down around the fire and began to tell the tale and then he didn't finish by the end of the book cause they had an opportunity to get out or something and he said he'd finish it later.

Honestly I think Lightner is a very good writer, I just don't think he did so well portraying another author's characters. When he added his own, such as the 13th Company Characters I thought he pulled them off very well indeed, but some of his writing with the already established characters was a little forced.

I also don't really like the book in terms of an end to the series. It was good and a fun read, I just don't feel it was a good ending for the Space Wolf series, it felt too... melodramatic and rushed. Plus as mentioned it didn't really do that well answering how Ragnar became a Wolf Lord, and yea that was part of the premise for the series, as in the prologue and epilogue of the first book if I recall correctly. I'm assuming he was a member of the Wolf Guard at the time of Berek and Mikal's death and was then chosen by the rest of the Wolf Guard to become Lord of the Company.

Personally my favorite part of the book was with the 13th Company, especially how Torvald still managed to survive alone holding back the tide of traitors while the Wolfblade and Wulfen went to fight the Thousand Sons, and the scene with all the Pack Leader's and Haeger's mead :P.

Though I must say my favorite book in the series is still Wolfblade. On the other hand I would like to see more from Lightner.

Actually I just re-read the first few books and it was after retaking an enemy stronghold and gathering around in the dawn to lick their wounds the Blood Claws ask Ragnar whether it was true that he had never been a Grey Hunter, and so he tells them the tale as the rest of the Company gathers around to listen in.

There is still more to Ragnar's story to be told, we got an idea of how he became Wolf Lord from the 2nd edition codex with his story. This series was more in detail and an add-on and was more about "The Spear of Russ's Arc." I personally would like to see other Space Wolf novel either about Bjorn being the 1st Wolf Lord, his early challenges and the first great hunts. Even a story about the first battle of the Fang. Or a book about the first Armaggedon War!! Heck, even a book about a new character! LOL anything Space Wolf would be an enjoyable read :)

Well as I see it this is only a part of the entire Ragnar Saga, IE the part about skipping being a grey hunter. At this point I believe hes now member of the wolf guard as he has redeamed(sp?) himself for his chapter and scince the last champion of Berek's has gained MotW hes not really a member of the body guard, soooo Ragnar takes his place as a member of the wolf guard.

In the end there is still more to be told this is just the first act in his saga with more to go.

I liked the book ok, but seriously, how much cooler is the original Ragner fluff? A random blood claw out of nowhere takes out an Ork Warboss and his entire Nob retinue, gets premoted to Wolf Guard, and when Berek is killed, he hunts down the chaos marine responsible and is elected as his replacement.

Much better IMO.....

I'd like a diffinitive answer on when the 13th Company vanished. Either at the sacking of Prospero or when Horus retreated from Terra. I've read accounts of both and it would be nice if the HH series would pick one finally.

I'm hoping anything that includes the Space Wolves will include Bjorn, he's such a cool character even 10,000 years later.

I am a avid reader of the series and liked this book a lot! Shame haegre died though. I lkoved the way he did.

It was particularly funny when the dreadnought appeared and everyone pooped themselves.

He just said he was sorry for a foe that was about to receive a severe punishing! Legend!

Emperor protect me.

I'm dragging up a buried thread, but there are NO RECENT DISCUSSION THREADS FOR THIS BOOK.

Personally I flipping loved this book. My only complaint was when Berek came back to the living and began to marshal his troops to assault the governor's palace, then suddenly they were IN the palace. We can't get a chapter about his assault?

I think its more about the main focus of the story-line and the characters, although Berek's part in storming the governors palace was important to a strategic point of view. What was happening to the major characters such as Ragnar and his group was far more of the main focus in the story in the novel, because of the importance of the events and the action happening were Ragnar was at that time.
Yes, i´ve finished the book yesterday and i love it, too. Specially the part were Ragnar and his friends sit around the campfire with the 13th company and listen to stories about Russ and the Spear. Man, i had been laying laughing on the floor. The book was a really good read. Now i want more, but but by the way the end was written it sounds like it was the last of the Ragnar series. I hope for the best but expecting the worst.

I to also hope that this is not the last book about Lord Ragnar Blackmane. I've been into 40k since 2nd edition and Ragnar has always been my favorite character. I also enjoyed lee's Wolf's Honor. I have also been assuming that this is just the end of "this saga" and the series will pick back up when Ragnar is a wolf guard in Bereks Company. I would expect that the fellows " Lee Lightner" would be writing more of the series as it says in their bio that they are both " avid space wolf fans". I'm going to be a bit disappointed if this is truly the last in the series. I hope GW realizes how many space wolf fans there are out there that want Ragnar Blackmanes saga to continue!!!

For the Emperor!!! For Russ!!

I think there is a substantial number of Space Wolf players in the world.. probably something like this:

1. Vanilla Marines

2. Space Wolves

3. Blood Angels

4. Dark Angels

5. Black Templars

This is what I have noticed, but obviously a world census on "what army do you use" is a bit impossible for me.

I just finished the 6th book Wolfs Honour and i am Seriously Pissed off That my Favorite Character Haegr who should of been in the next book series with Torin and Ragnar has died.

Alls i can think about is Torin Being on Terra sad missing his dead best friend.

And with Torin having to go back to Terra he doesn't have Ragnar or Haegr What a lonely road that is.

In the next book series they will never be able to fill the empty slots of Torin and Haegr even with Sven.

And if they try and add characters with as much personality or coolness as Haegr and Torin it will be immediately picked up by the readers as a bad Clone fill in Bullocks.

I want to email Lee Lightner group and tell them they are bastages for ending Haegr =/
