Iron Warrior Siege Company

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I decided to create a few datasheets for my Iron Warrior army and I thought I'd start simple. I wanted to have a siege company datasheet that would be fluffy and a good basis to build an army. It is based off the Battle Company from the Apoc book cause I didn't want to go too crazy in my first try. So here is the first of hopefully many, C&C Welcome

Iron Warrior Siege Company: 300 points + models

The Iron Warriors were once the battering ram of the Great Crusade, the Emperor's finest siege specialists. Although they are masters of all warfare, it is in the sieges they truely excel, no walls will stand before them and their goals. Like their fellow Traitor Legions, one Iron Warriors army is rarely constructed the same as the next. Lord Commander Tigurinum the Stalwart however has faced off against these heretics in multiple engagements and has noted that the majority of their siege armies are structured around a core which rarely changes. These "Siege Companies" are built of hardened siege troops who form the base upon which specialised units like Terminators or devestating Obliterators and Deamon Engines are added to create Grand Companies and full siege armies.

1 Captain (Chaos Lord)

0-1 Squad Chosen or Terminators as dedicated retinue for Lord (must have a dedicated Rhino for chosen or Landraider for Chosen or Terminators)

6+ Squads of Chaos Marines. Minimum 9 man squads, must have a Rhino purchased per squad

4+ Squads of Chaos Havocs. Minimum 9 Man squads, must have a Rhino purchased per squad

1 Linebreaker Squadron Formation

Special rules:

Iron Within, Iron Without!: Iron Warriors are arguably the best siege tacticians in or out of the Warp. Coupled with this Iron Warriors are crossed trained in the arts of the Mechanicum. To represent this all units within the formation gain the Universal Special Rules 'Siege Specialists' and 'Tank Hunters'.

Tech Adepts: Being cross trained by the mechanicum Iron Warriors make extensive use of Servo-Arms. The Captain, Members of Chosen Retinue or any Aspiring Champion may purchase a servo arm at a cost of 25 points or a full tech harness at cost of (See Codex Space Marines)

Along with this the formation gains for following Assets:

Orbital bombardment

Hold At All Costs

I love it, but I don't know if 300 points is enough for both seige specialists AND tank hunters. :) It seems to me that the entire army having the tank-hunting ability might be a little too powerful. Perhaps limit tank hunting to only the Havocs? Why must all the squads purchase transports? Having an abundace of transports is not something that I picture when I think of seige warfare, although I understand how they would come in useful once a breach has been opened up and the attacking force uses said transports to make a mad dash for an objective. I think transports should be optional. Other than that I think it looks great, I'd be curious to see what others opinions are.

Just out of curiousity, should this be in the apocalypse section?

Appreciate the feedback. I based the 300 point cost on the fact that in the old codex tank hunters was 3 points a model and siege specialists was free on IW, with approx 100 models that equals the same cost basic cost but I did seriously consider making it 350, I figured 400 was overpriced. I figure the 6 squads of troops wouldn't be a big deal with tank hunters and once again a fluffy choice for the tech adept bit. Your average bolter wielding trooper (which is approx 75-80% of this datasheet) can't do any damage on tanks, so you are paying for it on troops it won't matter on, so I figured that would even the costing out. Siege specialist was picked for fluffiness as in most games it doesn't matter as very few people use minefields or bunkers even in apocolypse, so I didn't really consider this a points problem but amybe I am being greedy.

I said transports were manditory cause I based it off the battle company in the apoc rule book and unless i'm reading it wrong I thought you had to buy them all transports. They are pictured on the datasheet so I assumed they were mandatory but if they aren't all the better, i will change teh sheet to make it by choice, however the mandatory 9 man minimum for squads will remain.

I put this here tog et a view from chaos as a whole not jsut apoc people, it is also posted in teh apoc datasheet review forum. Thanks again for your feedback, more people please weigh in. (Also my next planned datasheet is going to be called Iron Warriors Breach Takers)

Good idea, but being able to field an entire army of marines with tank hunters is worth slightly more than 300pts. Might wanna take the whole formation down a tad...Lower the amount of units you can take within it, and maybe sub out vehicles. Vindicators, defilers, basilisks, ect. Just my humble opinion.

Looks nice to me, you still pay a lot of points in order to get a siege company, think about all the models you need to pay for.

I like it that you've chosen a minimum of 9 man for the sqauds, this will help against people who might want to min-max with it.

One there would be an option to change is to replace the orbital bombardment perhaps with the bunkers asset as IW make considerable use of fixed fortifications.

And yes, the rhino's in the battle company are optional, the formation description doesn't mention them at all.
