My Flesh Tearers

Mortarion

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody! It's been a while since I last posted any images here but now I have finally managed to get some OK pictures of my Flesh tearers. I finished them this easter and they won "Best painted" on Sweden's largest 40K tournament (which I am very happy about).

The thoughts behind the army is that I wanted to do some really battle-worn and weathered marines. And Flesh tearers seemed to fit nicely into that theme. They have limited resources, so they cannot repair superficial damage that often but they are still BA successors so their armour and gear is still elaborate and detailed. So, basically, stuff that once looked great but now is worn.

When building the army I set kind of a challenge to myself. I would not use any metal or resin part. Only Plastic GW bitz, plasticard and greenstuff (and sand for the bases). Anything not available in plastics was converted. With one minor exception, I succeeded.

Unfortunately, my photo skills are not that great. And photographing red is usually quite hard. On the actual models, the legs of the marines are covered with dust. It's quite clearly visible at the feet and then gradually disappears higher up on the legs. One strange thing that I have noticed on these photos is that it's almost invisible. And I have no idea why!

Anyway, here is part one. I'll try to post part two sometimes this weekend.

PART 1 - TROOPS AND HEAVY SUPPORT

Sergeant

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h233/Bulonicus/FT/t2sarge.jpg

The pose of the sergeant was something I had a clear idea of right from the start, but it was one of the last models I built. I'm very happy with the models, but the banner didn't work out the way I had hoped.

With the missile launcher, I thought about FPS computer games (Doom, FEAR, Halflife, etc...). You never stand still and fire a rocket launcher. So I thought it would look cool to have a marine running and shooting at the same time.

Rhino

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h233/Bulonicus/FT/rhin2top.jpg

I love painting freehand and rhino hatches are great places for paintings. The idea was to paint a mix between religious painting, horror movie poster and heavy metal album cover. In the left hand corner you can see the only metal part in the entire army. A small piece of chain that I glued to the rhino without thinking. It took more then a month until I realised that I had used a metal part by mistake...

Sergeant

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h233/Bulonicus/FT/t4sarge.jpg

Another tactical squad. I really like the marines that are storming forward. With the sergeant, I wanted to give him a bit more character, so I replaced the exhausts on his backpack with two combat knives, ready to be drawn. I think it gave him a cool "feral" look. The marine with bare head wielding both a bolt pistol and a bolter is a squad leader.

Rhino

Another rhino. The painting is inspired by the poster for Army of Darkness, although it is not that obvious.

Assault squad Bathory - Combat squad Alpha

Sergeant

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h233/Bulonicus/FT/ass7det01.jpg

The sergeant is wielding a "Flesh tearer", which is my version of a powerfist. It is bascially a buzz saw blade attached below the hand of the marine. It can also be seen on the painting on the second rhino.

Angel of Death - Baal predator

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h233/Bulonicus/FT/baal.jpg

I don't like the assault cannons on GW's Baal predator, so I made mine look more like the assault cannons used by terminators. Personally I think it looks much better with longer and thinner barrels.

And that´s it for this part. More to come.

Any questions or comments? ;)

I really like what you have done with these, and I completely agree red is very tough to photograph correctly. I like how they all seem ferocious and the little touches like the serrated edges of a bayonet or the "flesh tearer" on the fist are nice touches.

Holy dog  ! They look damn good brother. The tanks, awsome, grade A+, Score 10/10. Did you use Green putty for the wings on the top of your Assault Sgt's Jumppack? Cause you just gave me a good idea for my Sgts and Veterans for my Successor boys. But grade A work man, I hope to see more of your troops.

PART 2 - HQ, ELITES AND FAST ATTACK

Veteran Assault Squad Bhramstook

Detail of the "Flesh tearer"

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h233/Bulonicus/FT/fleshtearer.jpg

My veteran assault squad. According to the background, the Flesh tearers do not have a dedicated veteran company due to the fact that they are way below full strength. Instead each company has company veterans. However, for my VAS I really wanted them to stand out from the rest, so I painted the first company symbol (the skull) on them anyway. So they are the company veterans from the first company who happens to fight with a strike force from the forth company.

Since they are Blood Angel successors, I wanted the heads to look like they marines actually cared what they looked like, instead of the usual shaved/bald look. And that meant sculpting hair. However, I still wanted them to look hardened and tough. It took some experimentation to find the hairstyles for that. :)

Ancient brother Orlok - Furioso dreadnought

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h233/Bulonicus/FT/dread.jpg

Since I had set the rules for myself not to use any metal or resin parts, the furioso presented a bit of a problem. I had to build a right arm with a dreadnought close combat weapon. It took a while, but I am happy with the results. It also took a while to figure out where to put the searchlight that comes as standard.

Drop pod

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h233/Bulonicus/FT/dreadpod.jpg

I had not really scratch built anything before, so the pod was included in the list to force me to build one. It took much more time then I anticipated but I gained lots of experience about how to build things. As for the painting I wanted it to look like it had really been launched through atmosphere, with lots of colour burnt off.

Brother Reinhaag - Chaplain

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h233/Bulonicus/FT/chap2.jpg

The background is a bit unclear about the colour of the Flesh tearers Death company. The army displayed in their IA article shows a grey DC, but that might just be that persons opinion. However, since it is the only available information I could find, I decided to paint them grey. But for the Chaplain I used the standard black armour (or rather a very dark version of the standard FT paint scheme) and gave him a grey tabbard. My idea is that he is not part of the death company but still linked to them. Also, it makes him form a visual link between the DC and the rest of the army.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h233/Bulonicus/FT/dcdet02.jpg

When looking through the book Horus Heresy - Collected visions I found some images of marines during the heresy wearing some kind of mask-looking helmets. It was not one of the previous "official" marks of power armour. In the book, they were mostly worn by Ultramarines and while they did look cool, I don't really think that they fit them. When I saw those images I started thinking how the idea could be put to better use. My first idea was Chaos marines but then it hit me... They were perfect for the death company! Since they remind atleast me of Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13:th movies, they also singals crazed, cold-blooded killer. The helmets are made with green stuff over Mk7 helmets and it took a few attempts to get it right.

The DC model holding his sword backwards and running past an oppontent was made to add a little more grace to the unit. I do not envision the Death company as totally bloodmad but rather "possessed" by the spirit of Sanginius. They are singleminded about killing their enemy and maybe earning a honourable death themself, but they still fight gracefully and with skill.

The DC model who has lost control of the Red thirst and is now feasting upon an unfortunate rebel guardsman is one of my favourite models in the entire army.

Also notice that his head have been shaved since he no longer cares about how he looks.

Attack bike squadron Victor

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h233/Bulonicus/FT/atbikes.jpg

My attack bikes have two modifications from the standard ones.

1. The gunshield. It seemed logical to protect the gunner at least a bit more then on the standard model.

2. The base. Originally, I intended to base it on a 60 mm round base, but when trying it I noticed that it did not really fit. The wheels would stick out outside the base. So I created a custom base. It is made from a WHFB chariot base, a WHFB cavalry base and a 40 mm round base.

Objectives

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h233/Bulonicus/FT/objectives.jpg

Made rather hastily shortly before a tournament. They represent wargear lost in the new codex (an auspex, a teleport homer and a familiar). I thought it was a unique idea at the time but since then I have seen several people on the Internet execute the idea much better.

And finally a group shot.

Wow! I mean where to start?! ;)

You have a very different painting style, that already makes this look unique and different from any others I've seen. The grey DC really stand out for me. I particulary like the running marine with back handed chainsword. Nice, simple conversion but it really clicks.

Your Rhinos are great, full of character and the Baal predator's assault cannons

Overall a great look and full of character! Well done!

Fantastic army, can't fault it.

The highlights for me are the bare headed guys, the flesh tearers and the death company marine drinking the blood of the poor guardsman.

The battle damage and bases look great and overall the army blends together brilliantly as a whole.

Ten out of ten! ;)

This is a nice bonus I didnt know there was more to your army! You really have thought a lot about the background of your army, units, and even individual marines within your army and I think that really comes across and when you add them all up gives your army a ton of character. It also leads to a very nice colorscheme which is strong and ties everything together. I think the grey death company was a good choice, if they were black they might have blended in too much with the rest of the army but that grey looks ace. What else can I saw, awesome!

mortarion. your armies are a constant inspiration to me (and to others i am sure). this one is no exception. the details are fantastic and the freehand is, once again, sublime. i have only one question: what is your next project?

congrats on an another awesome job.

About my next project: I am ashamed to report that my next project will be to add new models to an old army made up of foul Xenos.

However, it is not impossible that I might add some things to one of my armies consisting of the Emperor's finest. It would be cool to build FT versions of all the special characters for example. But that is probably a later project.
