Rhino Shenanigans

I've been having a think about the HQ choices that aren't Winged Daemon Princes. Winged Daemon Princes are very very good indeed, but I don't own one (I own a Prince, but haven't found time to sculpt him some wings yet). In the absence of a Winged Daemon Prince, I've been using a Sorcerer with Lash of Submission, who has this irritating habit of failing just enough cover saves to get himself perished.

I've also been having a think about Rhinos and how they're practically compulsory for CSM squads, and then it hit me.

Chaos Sorcerer joins Marine squad, boards Rhino. Rhino pelts forward 12", pops smoke to prevent most unwholesome early-shooting-down incidents, and then opens its Fire Point to let the Sorcerer lean out and Lash something.

I just want to make sure that I have the rules mechanics for this down pat. The Sorcerer uses Lash instead of firing a weapon in the Shooting phase. The Fire Point on the Rhino allows one model on board to fire a weapon from inside, provided the Rhino has moved no further than 12" and that it's not a heavy weapon - which it isn't. The smoke launchers prevent the vehicle from firing its weapons, but they appear to have no impact on the firing of weapons by models aboard the vehicle (Big Sort Of Blackish-Green Book p69).

Next turn, the Marine squad disembarks to within threat range of a target and all concerned open fire, hopefully doing damage. The Sorcerer uses Lash on the same target, either moving it into Rapid Fire range before the rest of the squad open fire or moving it out of counter-assault range (hopefully) after they've fired.

It seems slightly more sensible than my current "strategy" of sticking a jump pack on the Sorcerer and hoping for the best. He does get to where he needs to be, he just doesn't stay there for long without a squad to look after him, which in turn would bog him down (unless they were Raptors with a couple of plasma guns, I suppose... hmm...). This would appear to be the best of both worlds... provided I haven't missed something. Have I?

If I'm not mistaken (and I might be), popping smk would prevent the sorc. from using lash b/c it is treated like a shooting attack. If the enemy can't see throu the smk to shoot the rino, then the sorc can't see throu the smk to shoot the enemy. Lash must have LoS.

Your best bet is to give your sorc a raptor squad to hang with, never send a IC out be himself.

and yes, 2 plas would be good as it's the same range as lash.

Smoke launchers do not block line of sight to or from the vehicle. The vehicle simply can't fire its own weapons at all, and can still be shot at - just not very effectively. I really don't think there's anything stopping this terrible behaviour...

The Raptors are seeming more and more tempting. The thought of Lashing something into dual-flamer range (until I have some spare plasma guns to equip them with) amuses me immensely.

Yes it is very nice using the lash with Raptors. I have one myself. I have (rotate out) 2 with Flamers/meltas/ plasma (this was before I knew how to magnatize) People just hate it. have a flamer on one side and one on the opposite side, lay down 2 flamer templates and watch your opponent squirm, LOL funny

In Fifth, the Rhino will be the perfect "mount" for your Sorcerer. Buy one for your Havocs, or your Chosen. Hop the Sorcerer in first turn (thanks, new-dedicated-transport-rules!) and just have him tooling around shooting Lash out the top. It'll get busted eventually, but it will shield him from at least a round's worth of shots (since, when it dies, he can hop out and hide behind the wreck.) It's basically great.

I do something simular, I fly my sorc with raptors w/ 2 flamers but my sorc doesn't have lash (no slanny in my army) but WoC, so the enemy squad gets hit w/ 3 flamer templates. Usually not much left to assault after that ;)
