Gideon Bane
I'm new to building a Chaos army that I attempted to get off the ground a couple of years ago but quit doing anything with it when my local FLGS closed down. The original list and collection was 3e. I had originally intended to do an Iron Hands army and then decided to go Traitor and do an Iron Warriors army instead. I then realized that among other things the IW paint scheme didn't appeal to me as well as being not unique enough to my local area. I found the Word Bearers an interesting choice (Comparative Religion major in college) so I decided on them. I then painted up 3 models in terms of the Word Bearers paint scheme. The Dark Apostle was composed of various bits of loyalists and Iron Warriors with some regular chaos bits and custom modeling. I also painted up a heavily modded Predator (Demonic Hull) and another squad marine. I also have 1 loyalist test model that I painted to see what I could do with a different painting style. It's been some time since I reviewed my full collection of unpainted marine bits but if I remember correctly I have the following 30 chaos marines, some partially assembled with additional IW torsos and helms and so on (two sets IW and two vanilla) 10 Loyalists with a Plasma cannon making up the tenth man as such I also have a very old school terminator captain (2e) and a Psycannon Grey Knight Termie I could likely convert (being as no Grey Knight has supposedly defected I may skip that particular I also have around 20 demons (Daemonettes and Furies) probably most of which are still in usable condition. I picked up the new Codex on Thursday having had the 4th edition Rulebook since it came out. I'm debating what to do with the models I have and possible economically upgrade my army (for instance take some loyalist jetpacks and make some form of raptor). I may also get some other units but I will have to think long and hard. Background on me fairly short, I've played Warhammer 40k on and off for the better part of 11 years, starting as Eldar in the second edition and moving on to 3e with them. I then expanded in various directions, trying a squad of necrons before deciding that they lacked personality, thus I wound my way to Chaos, having picked up a 6th edition Skaven army in the process. I have reasonably good painting skills and fairly good modeling and conversion abilities. Thoughts as to what direction to take this army of mine before I begin again? Roultox
Firstly, if you feel kinda rag-tag in the different armor schemes and types, remember that Chaos raids often and every chance they get. Its not uncommon to see mark 4 with mark 6 armor and even gray knight suits in chaos hands. Various types of jet packs can be taken and used for centuries, and often reflects the red corsairs/defectors that join word bearers. The word bearers have plenty reason to bash the Iron Warriors for religious reasons. So, some people go with a "uniform" look or a "I steal as I go" look. The Psycannon dude could represent a special plasma gun if you modify it a bit, or add a missile pack and call it a hip-mounted missile launcher. You should have the codex in hand, and perhaps collect a few marines specificly in the heavy and assault weapon areas and try loadouts. Posts lists up in the chaos army list section when your ready. Just remember to have your units planned out, a flamer with a lascannon in a 10+ marine unit isnt quite efficient if you know what I mean. (Plasma gun+heavy weapon, or two meltas/flamers work well) Enjoy.
