High Marshal Pallantides
Hey all, I am usually a lurker here on the boards. Typically I just check the modeling section of the boards for inspiration and such, but it has come back to bite me in the sense that now I am here with this log...True Scale marines by yours truly! I have been inspired by The Crimson Fist Marine artwork by Karl Kopinski, Synapse, Doghouse and a guy named Sheep over on warseer and I have taken what they have done and boiled it down to something that I think I can handle. My GS skill are not the greatest, but hopefully that will change over time! Anyway here are a few WIP shots taken today, I hope you all enjoy! http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1338-1.jpg Some scale shots: http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1335.jpg http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1326.jpg and some of the first GS work, again done today: http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1340.jpg and http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1341.jpg The next thing I need to do is GS the upper thigh, once this is done and if the feed back is positive for the rest of the model, then I'll do the chest next. When that is done, then I am thinking about cutting some Guitar string to length for the power cables in the abdomen area, or maybe armor it up some? Also I need to figure out what rules to use for these guys! I have thought about doing the whole thing as a count as army for Dark Angel Deathwing, or I have thought about doing them up as Vanilla marines. I am not sure which chapter to make them! So any feed back as far as that is concerned would be greatly appreciated! Orignally I thought about using the current Codex Space Marine and give them the true grit trait, but I have heard rumors saying that True Grit will be no more =( And I am not sure if people would have a cow if I modeled them that way or not! Anyways, feed back, thoughts critiques and criticisms are more than welcome! and again to the gentlemen mentioned above, thanks for your inspiration to proceed with such a project! Thanks, Chappy P! Inquisitor =D=
Looks Great! No really, he looks great! In truth though I'm more interested about the guardsmen. But that is heresy on this forum. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/135655-true-scale-marine-by-chappy-p/#findComment-1563106 Share on other sites
Skull_Lord
Looks nice, what about postin the Guardsman on Boot Camp? The marine doesent look like a termi even though hes mostly termi parts, good job.. looking forward to seeing more Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/135655-true-scale-marine-by-chappy-p/#findComment-1563261 Share on other sites

High Marshal Pallantides
Hey All! First off thanks for the replies! I really appreciate it :D Second, I hope that my novice GS skills will help inspire others to try and use GS! Smoothing it was rather easy, I used tips given by Doghouse in his tutorial on these boards and a lot of water and as gross as this sounds, body oil :P The oil your body produces I find works well when using GS and keeping the standard GW sculpting tool moist. I use both the tool and my fingers to do the work, just take your time and it should work out well. It also helps if you keep your expectations low :P Anyway a quick update: http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1345.jpg with these four I now have the start of a combat squad! I want to see how five non-modified legs look and see if I can get some varied poses with no dismemberment of the legs. I might try one guy to start with by chopping up the legs and re-posing him, but I am a bit nervous about that! I have posted about the "other guy" in my warseer blog. I am not trying to promote that board or breach any kind of board etiquette by talking about non-power armored type individuals :) Hopefully I can get some more work done today on the upper thighs! I wanted to give the lower legs a good 24hours to dry so I can handle the model without leaving finger prints. Nothing is worse than working with GS and getting everything just right, then as you handle another part of the model, you accidentally touch the part you just did! I do have a couple of questions: 1) What rule set to use for these guys! Straight Codex? Treat them as Deathwing with the thought that these guys are a tougher, more elite Space Marine in normal armor? 2) What Chapter should I do? A codex chapter or something made up? Originally I'd like to have done them as trait marines, using the True Grit trait. However the rumors indicate that Traits are out in the new edition, but I don't know if people would let me use these guys modeled after true grit? Again thoughts, Critiques and comments are always welcomed! Chappy P! snorkle
In the new codex marines will probably have a bolter, a boltpistol and a chainsword so you're fine having them be true grit now. Later nobody'll be able to complain, because we won't have traits ^_^ Great GS work. They're coming along quite nicely. Ekkanus
You sure you're a novice GS'er? lol That looks really good so far! As for chapter etc it all depends on what you prefer. At the moment i've started my own chapter but now that i've heard about the new edition of rules i'm tempted to start playing with a current force (Space Wolves). If you enjoy converting them like this then you could always do both (a current chapter AND one of your own). Now that i've seen you doing that i'm definately tempted to have a go with the GS later.... Doghouse
Looking really good so mate, nice job with the GS work. :) Chapter preference is really up to you but as far as rules go standard marine codex is good. High Marshal Pallantides
@Snorkle: Hmmm...if the new codex is like Codex Dark Angels, then Marines will have Bolters, grenades and bolt pistols! No option for Chainswords...I have to think about what I wish to do. I wonder how hard it would be to convert terminator arms to hold a bolter with both hands? @Ekkanus: Try one guy and see how it goes! That's what I did. Just take your time and go slow. I did the lower legs first, then let that dry overnight, then today I did the upper thighs and it looks great! I'll update the page tomorrow with some new pics. @Mercer: Thanks! I appreciate the comment! It's a great encouragement to know that I seem to be on the right track. @Doghouse: Thanks! Coming from you means a lot to me! I am still torn as to what chapter I'd like to do...I'll have to stew on it some more! Well, hopefully tomorrow I'll post pictures of the leg work I got done today! Five legs are now fully GS'ed! I am really excited. I think I want to start on some chest next, but the issue is, I have run out of space marine back torso sections! I have a couple of things which might work, but we'll see... again thanks to all who have commented, it really helps to keep me motivated to see this through! I eventually want to do 1500pts of these guys! So I really need to buckle down and decide on a chapter and figure out the arm situation! If anyone has an idea please let me know! I guess I'll through this out to you guys: 1) Should I model them with Close combat weapons and Bolters? Should I try and see if close combat terminator arms could hold a bolter with both hands? 2) Would you play against this army if modeled for true grit as long as I told you that they didn't have it and that the chainswords are for show only? Thanks, Chappy P! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/135655-true-scale-marine-by-chappy-p/#findComment-1564120 Share on other sites
High Marshal Pallantides
Sorry for the double post, but here is the next round of updates! I now have finished the GS work on five legs! So now I need to turn my attention to the upper bodies. Here are the pictures, sorry that some of them are not the greatest, I am still trying to get used to the camera! http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1348.jpg http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1349.jpg http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1350.jpg http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1351.jpg again any thoughts, comments, critiques and criticisms are more than welcome! cathar the great
they look good, i'm planning to do a truescale marine just like them. one question: is the green stuff work on the legs complicated? all i ever did was make capes for scouts and something very ugly on a nurgle terminator XD Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/135655-true-scale-marine-by-chappy-p/#findComment-1564463 Share on other sites
High Marshal Pallantides
@Cathar: Nope the GSing of the legs was really simple. I would suggest taking your time and doing a little bit at a time as well. I did the lower legs first and let them sit overnight, then I did the upper thighs, which was a bit more complicated, but I took my time with them and I think they turned out great. There are a couple of spots where I might have to cover with purity seals, or scroll containers etc., but other than that it was easy. I hope this helps! Thanks, Chappy P! Dorns Padawan
Dude these look well sweet! I echo what Ekkanus said!!! Can't fault you to be honest, so great, so far!!! You gonna add some ammo pouches or grenades to the armour to make him look battle ready? Also maybe some battle "wear & tear"? They might add nice touches? As far as what chapter to do, maybe not one of the more commonly made chapters. Perhaps go with a second founding chapter? How about Storm Lords or Angels Sanguine? Keep up the great work! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/135655-true-scale-marine-by-chappy-p/#findComment-1564557 Share on other sites
High Marshal Pallantides
@Dorns Padawan: Thanks for the reply! Yes, they will all get a Bolt pistol holster, grenades and either the two long pouches or the three small pouches. I am planning to dirty them up quite a bit. However I am now feeling rather stumped! I went to one of three LGS today and the guys there seem rather strict as far as WYSISWG...My original plan was to do my own chapter and have then use the true grit rule. However thanks to the new rule set, that is going out the window...I need to take a look at Synapses true scales to see how he did his flamer and Hvy bolter, and see if I maybe able to modify that for a bolter toting marine. more things to ponder. I hope to get some pictures up either tomorrow or Friday. I managed to work on three torso's today and I might need to do a little bit of work on them tomorrow and post pictures up Friday...we'll see what happens! Thanks, Chappy P! Brother Plasticard
Maybe a heavy bolter into a bolter? You might have to cut it down a bit, or swap some bitz... Good work so far! They look very good! Dorns Padawan
No problemo! You intending to have him with a standard bolter or you wanting him to use the "artillery"? Synapse used normal bolters if i remember correctly? Or if your gonna use the heavy pieces, you either cut them in half and stretch them out a bit by adding some GS in between or cut them up and repostition them peices? I can't be of too much help really as i have yet to make my own true scale SM as i am working on a Primarch project, but once that is done, i shall look to people such as yourself, Synapse and Doghouse for inspiration (no pressure! ). So many things to think about lol! Well good luck, can't wait to see the pictures!!!! :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/135655-true-scale-marine-by-chappy-p/#findComment-1565250 Share on other sites
synapse
very very nice smooth work on the legs! you planning on bulking out the chests or just using normal plastic ones? High Marshal Pallantides
@Dorn Padawan: Wow, no pressure indeed! To me Synapse and Doghouse as well as Sheep from Warseer are the guys I look up to for this project! I plan on using normal Bolters. I think what I might try is to cut a storm bolter arm just below the shoulder and turn it, then use either the Power weapon arm or some such and see if it'll reach with little to no modification. @Synapse: Wow, my inspiration comes a callin'! It was seeing the first guy you did over on Warseer that started this project for me! If I felt a little more confident, I would have gone all out doing these guys Synapse style, but unfortunately my time is limited. I am thinking about doing my HQ Synapse style with all the works, but I am still debating that. Anyway, I am using the front terminator chest piece with the top part cut off, this is glued to a normal marine back, with the sides filled in with GS. I'd say the chest have about 1mm gap, but that's a rough estimate. Here are some more wip shots! http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1372.jpg http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1374.jpg http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1369.jpg Hey Synapse does my arm theory sound good?? How did you do your Heavy flamer and Heavy bolter guy? From what I have seen, it looked as though you cut a storm bolter arm and turned it, but which arm did you use for the support arm? I am planning on trying to use pointing arms and stuff like that to help cut down the tedious work, but i don't want to fill the squad up with too much of that! Thanks, Chappy P! High Marshal Pallantides
Sorry again for the double post! I just had to get these wip shots in! Bolter issue solved? http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1375.jpg The support arm will need to be modified a little, but I am hoping to bit order some close combat arms and I think those should do the job without modification! here's some scale shots: True Scale vs Normal GW scale: http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1378.jpg True Scale vs guardsmen scale: http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1380.jpg I feel like the pictures don't do these guys justice at all! I don't have any suggestions, but I do have a question... what are the two torsoes you used? I like them both and am hoping I can find them somewhere, but have no idea where to start looking since I don't know what set they come from. High Marshal Pallantides
@Riklanim: The front piece is the terminator chest with the arch taken off. The back is the Rhino hatch guy's back piece, I had three of those hanging out, so I used what I had on hand. I have to order some more normal marine backs for the rest of the project! I hope this helps, next time I'll try to do a non-GSed pic of the torso to give you a better idea... Thanks, Chappy P! Dorns Padawan
WOAH!!! Chappy you reek of awesomeness!!! Looking very good so far! Love the bolter! Would love to know what sort of gaurdsman you used?! Is he a sniper? He looks pretty nifty! I see you point about the arm. I got myself a Black Templars upgrade sprue cause there are loads of bits on that which are great, you would probably find very useful. Your arm idea sounds pretty good though i can't really think what sort of arm to suggest for you to use???!!! Nothing to stop you using a little GS to elongate an arm into postition? Overall, very impressive! Like i said, no pressure mate! ^_^ Just an idea, to make the power pack look more to scale with the space marine, how about cutting it straight across the top and adding 1-2mm of plasticard or GS to it to stretch it out a little? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/135655-true-scale-marine-by-chappy-p/#findComment-1565748 Share on other sites
High Marshal Pallantides
@Dorns Padawan: I don't think I'll need to add any GS or plasticard to make the arms work! It looks like a simple cut, twist the arm in place and glue. I am thinking about leaving the power pack the size it is. Mainly due to the fact that I think it looks too big on the normal guys and in some of the artwork found on the official GW site, the packs look smaller than they are modeled. Plus after reading several Black library novels, mainly Dan Abnetts Brother of the Snake, Ben Counters Soul Drinkers and William Kings Space wolf trilogy, they all sound very agile for their size and I think that a hug pack would off set that a bit. I know when I used to go hiking with an external frame back pack, it threw me off tremendously and I always wished I had a smaller tighter internal frame pack that wouldn't screw with my sense of balance! Plus I am lazy as all heck and want to convert as little as possible so this can be more inspiring to those who want to try but are somewhat afraid too! Thanks, Chappy P!
