Dorns Padawan
Good point, never thought of it like that?! Cool well good luck with it, can't wait to see more WIP pics :) Brothers of the snake, Soul drinkers - are they a worth while read? I liked the look of Brothers of the snake. Need a new read for travelling in London for 7 weeks (nnnooooooooooooooooooooo) soon. Lords of the night is another i am defo gonna get soon. Would like to know more about the Night Lords. Ekkanus
@Dornspadawan: Not read Soul Drinkers (Yet) but i have read Brotherhood of the Snake and it gave me a few ideas for conversions etc. It's a DAMN good book, one of the very few Black Library books i managed to read within 2 days simply because i put it down (The Ravenor Trilogy being the other ones). Actually reading this thread has given me a small idea....would love to see some Iron Snakes in truescale, complete with their spear/harpoon thingys (can't remember what they are called!) Can't wait to see more of your project mate! High Marshal Pallantides
@Dorns Padawan: I really enjoy Ben Counter's works. I have read the first 2 books of the soul drinker trilogy. I have the third book, but then I picked up Brother of the Snake and couldn't put it down. I also read the first Grey Knight book and have the second book again by Mr Counter. Anything by Dan Abnett to me is good. I know some didn't like Brothers of the Snake, but when you read it, you really want marines to be more than what GW has sculpted them to be. They seem so much more, and larger than life! I'll try to have another small update later on today. Thanks, Chappy P! Dorns Padawan
Ekkanus: If both you and Chappy couldn't put the book (Brotherhood of the snake) down then dang it must be good! Will defo be investing in that one. Sounds quite intruiging especially if it made you wanna make some true scales!!! :D Chappy: I have only read 2 Dan Abnett books (Horus rising & Legion) and am impressed with his work. A lot of people at my local GW highly recommend his work! Would like to read the Soul drinkers books so might take your a look at one of them if you quite recommend Ben Counter?! :P Look forward to your small update! ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/135655-true-scale-marine-by-chappy-p/page/2/#findComment-1566664 Share on other sites
High Marshal Pallantides
@Dorns Padawan: IMHO Dan Abnett is the best Black Library writer! His Gaunts Ghost series is really amazing, I am only a small portion through it, but it's a great read. I like Graham McNeill an awful lot too. Brothers of the Snake seems disjointed at first, but it was a great read. Part of the book is a compilation of short stories Dan wrote in the Inferno Magazine. I do enjoy Ben Counter a lot as well. He tends to start slow, then he bust lose and I usually get really wrapped up in his work. Hopefully I will update tomorrow, I just got home from a Cleveland Indians game and I am beat! thelastonestanding
Would love to know what sort of gaurdsman you used?! Is he a sniper? He looks pretty nifty! I believe he used a Warhammer wood elf model, one of these I do believe although I could be wrong:Wood Elves Glade Guard Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/135655-true-scale-marine-by-chappy-p/page/2/#findComment-1566838 Share on other sites
High Marshal Pallantides
Thanks again for the replies! Here is a small non-modeling update. What do you guys think about the following color scheme, made possibly by the Space Marine Painter of B&C: http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/spacemarine2.jpg I am thinking about making these guys a twist on the Deathwatch space marine chapter. I envision them as the very best, the elite. So far I am thinking about using codex Dark Angels to represent them, until Codex Space Marines comes out later this year. I was thinking about doing 3 to 4 tactical squads. Lead most likely by a Librarian and or Chaplain and possibly backed by 3 Vindicators? Thoughts, Comments and or Critiques? Thanks, Chappy P! Ekkanus
i like the idea of that, i think (if memory serves) its slightly similar to the Dusk Raiders colour scheme (one of the arms and shoulders being the same colour) and i like the idea of a deathwatch-esque army. I must be WELL behind on GW News - whats that about a new Space Marine Dex? GLD
The model looks great and has inspired me to make a true-scale marine as my company captain, just as an experiment to see how it turns out... High Marshal Pallantides
@GLD: Thanks! I am glad to have inspired you to try this! It's actually really easy as long as you take your time! Go slow! Here's a small update! Torso's for 3 marines are done and glues to the legs, with backpacks also in place! http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1382.jpg Work on the arms has started too! http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1381.jpg http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1383.jpg and shoulder pad work has started as well! http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1386.jpg so this week I plan on ordering some more parts! I have decided not to convert many legs, just fix them up with Green Stuff. I thought I needed some more Marine backs, but I have some from a chaos marine box set that I wasn't using. So my goal for the week is to GS the final 5 legs I currently have in my collection, to order more parts and hopefully get some terminator chest pieces to do the other five torso's! I also want to get some Close combat arms and see if they'll work better as Bolter support arms! So far I think the paint scheme will work, but should I go for the one above or should I do the following one: http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/spacemarine3.jpg Let me know! High Marshal Pallantides
@S.O.N: Which color scheme? Red Right arm or a red left arm? Thanks hopefully I'll get some more work done tomorrow! @Local: Due to this being a power armor only board, I'd rather you PM me just to keep things legit! I don't want to bring upon us all the wrath of the B&C inquisition, cause I hear they are ruthless :D Thanks, Chappy P! Dorns Padawan
At last i finally have access to the internet again! Chappy: Liking the colour schemes mate, especailly the first one with the left red arm. The new marine looks like he is coming on well! What thickness do you use when seperating the chest plates or is it "go by eye"? Got my last exam tomorrow then i think i will attempt my own "true scale"! Looks like you are setting a high standard here, there are a lot of us true scale virgins out here who will be looking upon you for guidence lol!!!!!!! Keep up the great work! ;) PS - are the chest plates always terms or do you use standard mark VII? Thanks! ;) Thelaststonestanding: Thanks a lot for answering my querry! High Marshal Pallantides
@Dorns Padawan: First, thanks for the reply and input on the color scheme, I think I need to try and set up a poll to determine if I should paint the left or right arm red!?! Ok, onto your questions: The thickness separating the chest is roughly done by eye, it's a hair over 1mm thick. I have 4 chest waiting to be filled in today, so I'll try to snap a photo or 2 to post for all to see. I might have to do a small tutorial, cause I shave part of the back torso down a bit, use some GS to keep things aligned and then use glue to hold the pieces together, let dry over night, then GS the gap. I'll write up a tutorial...It's easier shown, than explained! So far I have always used terminator chest, mainly for the bulk effect! I tried using some previous true scale attempts where I used normal marine chest with 1mm plasticard between them and it didn't look right. And finally I didn't want to answer the question about my guardsman, mainly due to the fact that the B&C is a power armor only board, but I will always answer questions through Personal Message. PM me and I'll fill in any details you may need, I just don't want to incur the wrath of the B&C inquisition :) I hope to have another update within the next day or so! I did 5 more legs for a total of 1 squad (10 men), I also have about 7 torso's that are almost done. I am hoping to get some terminator Close combat arms this week. I think that the shield arms will be the ones I use to help hold the bolters. The Sgt arms I have converted work ok, but they are not the best and I feel like I can do better. Thanks, Chappy P! Master Toddius
I love what you're doing with you marines and really dig the armor mods as Doghouse and others have done in the past. Its ALOT of work but the result can be very cool. My question for the OP and I guess everyone here is -- What do you do when the desire to have a squad Terminators in this army arises? How would one model a true scale terminator at that point? Do you bulk out the bulked out termie model again with similar armor details like those shown in the arms and chest? Just wonderin. Great work, though. Love the AoR wip model as well. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/135655-true-scale-marine-by-chappy-p/page/2/#findComment-1570279 Share on other sites
High Marshal Pallantides
@Master Toddius: If and when I decide to do True Scale Terminators, they'll be done in a similar manner as the marines. The notable difference will be I'll cut the lower leg and add some height there. Most likely I'll add a small spacer between the torso and legs. I'll try to widen the overall torso buy 1, maybe 2mm (.5-1mm on each side of the torso width-wise) and possibly give them some height drag queen style. I honestly need to find out how much taller a Terminator is to a marine, I cannot imagine it would be that much larger, but I could be wrong! Hopefully I'll have some pics up either tomorrow or friday. Thanks, Chappy P! Dorns Padawan
Yeah a poll be be good, i say red left arm!!!!! <_< A tutorial would be superb! Just got back from town and got me a box assault terms. Aslo got a vice and model saw for some major converting time now that exams are over!!! No probs about the forbidden topic, i hear the word Inquisition and thats all you need to say brother!!! Will PM you bout that one :D Will defo look very much forward to seeing the next installment of WIP photos! Once i see how you get the basic jist of the torso, i shall crack on, in the mean time i will make a start on the legs. Gonna make some old school Raven Guard!!! High Marshal Pallantides
@Dorns Padawan: Hey thanks for the vote on the paint scheme, I hope to get on it really soon, but I do have a bit of work to do before hand, so I guess it's... update time! First up let's take a look at the chest and a very bad tutorial...you'll have to use your imagination for this one! First cut down this piece circled in red! This will allow the front chest piece to rest better on the back piece: http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/Back1.jpg Next take a small glob of GS and place it roughly here with in the green circle: http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/Back2.jpg next take a front part of the terminator and smush it together with the back piece and you should have something like this: Side view: http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1387.jpg Top View: http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1388.jpg Don't worry too much if some smushes out of the top, just take the GW sculpting tool and scoop the excess out of the top! The mid section will be filled in and I hope to work on that either tonight or tomorrow night. When both sides are together take some polystyrene glue and glue both sides together using the GS to hold the pieces in place. The GS is there mainly for stability. Now a quick shot of what I have going on so far, minus 2 sets of legs not shown below! http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1390.jpg Now since I got my pay check today hopefully I'll place a bit order for the Combat arms and hopefully that'll help with converting the support arms for the bolters. I am also thinking about the heavy and special weapons and whether or not to make them a bit larger than life or keep them more in the realm of reality. Oh and I forgot, I did manage to get some of these bad boys which I think will help with the mid torso gap filling: http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1394.jpg It's a set of size 0 clay shapers I bought at a local art supply store, I have heard great things about them, but I haven't tried them yet! geordie
Great work so far, especially inspiring for people who don't have the guts to chop up a £25 box set! Have you considered a halfed red/black scheme, that might look really cool and be a bit easier to do since the models are bigger! Got to know how that guardsman is built, gonna send a PM. Dorns Padawan
Superb tutorial Chappy! Can you still order bit parts or have i misunderstood you (re: combat arms)? I had to buy the full set of terms. Anyways, i will make a start on the legs tonight! Truly great stuff you got going there mate! Whats next on your list of things to do? Oh, did i also mention you should stick with the first colour scheme that would look awesome!!!! High Marshal Pallantides
@Geordie: Thanks for the reply! I think I'll stick with just one arm being red! I already have a marine army with the half scheme of green/bone and that was a pain to do! And hey it's just $50 sets here in the states! gotta love our American dollar! At first it was difficult, but honestly is was Synapse then doghouse and finally an Australian by the name of Sheep over on Warseer who finally pushed me over the edge to try out this en devour! @Dorns Padawan: There are a couple of places online where you can bit order pieces, so right now I need to get the arms which holds the combat shields. I think they'll work for the left arms which support the bolter. Next up is to fill in the last lower leg section on the last 5 sets of legs. The fill in the torso side gaps with GS, then do the lower abdomen in GS. Once the main bodies are done, then I will work on the arms which is the next major thing for me to do! When the bodies and arms are done, then it's time to do the shoulders which I have done quite a bit on today, but I haven't taken any pictures yet. I also have to bit order the Inquisitor shoulder shields. The bases will be build in an urban fashion with barbed wire and stuff like that, maybe some bent girders and the like! Then painting, I think I am going to do the left arm red, with red chest eagles! Thanks, Chappy P! Dorns Padawan
Red left sideded arms sound pukka to me! Sounds like your having a productive time! Please send me a link for the peices cause here in the UK we have to buy things as one or not at all now. Until christmas gone, you could crder any parts you like but now GW got rid of that service for some reason? Now its become a real expensive hobby! Cant wait to see you photos, sounds like your more than half way there! Urban bases sound cool!!!! You sound as if you seem to really have got the hang of "true scaling" now as you sure do seem to be flying through them! :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/135655-true-scale-marine-by-chappy-p/page/2/#findComment-1571153 Share on other sites
