True Scale Marine by Chappy P!

Thanks again for the replies! Here is a small non-modeling update.

What do you guys think about the following color scheme, made possibly by the Space Marine Painter of B&C:

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/spacemarine2.jpg

I am thinking about making these guys a twist on the Deathwatch space marine chapter. I envision them as the very best, the elite. So far I am thinking about using codex Dark Angels to represent them, until Codex Space Marines comes out later this year.

I was thinking about doing 3 to 4 tactical squads. Lead most likely by a Librarian and or Chaplain and possibly backed by 3 Vindicators?

Thoughts, Comments and or Critiques?

Thanks,

Chappy P!

why DA? why not BA?

@Dorns Padawan: Hey Thanks, I'll PM you the sites as I am not sure if it's allowed to post them here in the main thread! Yeah I am really liking the speed at which I am able to hammer these guys out, if I only had the parts I need, then this would really fly! And don't worry I will try to keep the pictures coming! As soon as I can get the arms I need I am hoping that this first squad will fly!

Now I need to start thinking about what to do for heavy weapons and the squad plasma gun!?! I am undecided to go extremely large like Synapse did or to tone it down some. I thought about maybe making the heavy weapon into a servitor type of thing, either a human made into a lasCannon or a larger floating servo skull type of thing? Or I have even thought about the concept sketches for the last Marine codex, where the weapons were mounted on the marines back and they controlled them by remote!

Thoughts people? Servitor's, Servo skulls or Back mounted? I may be able to make them hand-held, but I am not sure if I can pull it off modeling wise?

@RRChristensen: Awesome! I love it when the community does projects like this on a massive scale (opps! no pun intended!) you should start a thread as well, I have found that the responses I have gotten through this and other boards has really helped me to want to finish and continue on with the en devour!

@Inquisitor_Lensoven: I have meant to take a look at the white dwarf codex to see what kind of list I could build...I really want to keep assault squads at a minimum. I thought about Dark angels mainly due to the fearless aspect of them...Plus I really see them as a secret chapter used by the inquisition to do dirty deeds and black ops for the/and in the name of the Emperor! I have to stop playing/reading Tom Clancey games/novels and other things like the Bourne Identity and the list goes on and on! Plus black covers a multitude of modeling sins :tu:

Anyway, I gotta run and have some family time before I put my son to bed, then hopefully I can get in some quality modeling time!

Thanks,

Chappy P!

Sorry for the double post, but boy did I get some quality modeling time in, and I have a newfound secret weapon!

These bad boys ROCK!!!!! It was the best investment I have made in a long time! and it'll speed up the time it takes for me to do these guys! All you have to do is place the GS where you want it and use what ever tool fits your needs best and it does the rest for you, with NO need to keep the tool wet!?! I cannot rave enough of these tools, cause within the time it took for me to talk with my Parents over the phone I managed to green stuff ALL of the mid-waist gaps! and the side gaps on four of them as well as the last lower legs on five of them! So here are some more WIPs:

Mid torso gaps, which are no more:

A couple of close ups!

and here's a couple of shots of the squad as they stand right now!

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1404.jpg

I'll wait overnight before I glue the back packs on the four guys I have torso's for and again I need to order some parts before I can move on, but with the clay shapers, when the parts do arrive, I'll be able to blow through these guys really fast! I would encourage anyone who is thinking about attempting this modeling project to go and pick yourselves up some of these marvelous tools!

Oh and I wasn't too concerned with the torso's and their lack of perfection as the Bolters will cover the mid sections. With any marine who's mid section isn't covered I'll take a bit more time and care to make them smoother! I might even attempt to do some assault marines now! But, we'll see!

Thanks,

Chappy P!

I LOVE them so far!

You're pretty much the only one I've seen who

's gotten the scale pretty much 100% correct... most people get them to big but you've managed to scale them just enough ^^,

give them to me when done? (What? a guy can dream can't he?;P)

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chappy, have you turned into an overnight legend all of a sudden ;) ??????????? Dang dude, looks like the Dogfather (praise be to Doghouse :P ) has a real competitor in the true scale world! This is turing out to be like one of them TV shows that you get hooked on yet get left waiting a week to find out what happens next! These guys look freakin' awesome!!!!!!! I sooooo cannot wait for the paint job to occur :D ! Remember this if anything, DONT RUSH!!!!! What you have here is genius in waiting! Ok, enough of me heaping on the kudos! You decided what heavy artillery your gonna give these little badboys? ;)

@Müller: Thanks for the reply! I am glad to have then in the right proportion, but I cannot take all the credit for these guys, I really do have to share with the three who have personally inspired me to do this and that would be Doghouse, Synapse and Sheep! Each one of these guys has given me a part of each marine, and Synapse has inspired me as far as what I plan on doing if/when I add in Terminators to my army list!

@Dorns Padawan: Dude your too kind :( Again I don't like to think of this as a competition, but more as a community helping each other grow in the hobby! Without the three guys above, I would never have done this kind of project! Now I hope to use the community to help me finish it.

@Ekkanus: I cannot rave enough about the clay shapers! They have been one of the best buys I have made in a long time!

Ok time to answer your questions:

1) Color Scheme...I haven't decided yet! I wish I knew how to set up a poll and I'd let the community decide, but right now I think I am leaning on the left arm red scheme...thoughts?

2) Heavy artillery, right now I am leaning towards Las/Plas squads...I have thought about something along the following lines for an army list:

HQ: Either Librarian or Chaplain, maybe both?

Troops: 2 Squads las/plas in Rhinos

Fast Attack: 1 Assault squad

Heavy Support: 2 tanks, maybe vindicators, maybe Predators? Depends on what happens in 5th edition and the new Marine codex. Right now I am using Codex: Dark Angel for a rough idea on point values and the like. Eventually I would like to move from 1500pts, to 3000pts, but in small incriments!

Painting will hopefully be relatively soon, again I hope to place my bit order either today or maybe hold off till Monday...

Anyway, Thanks again for the support and encouragement, I really appreciate it!

Thanks,

Chappy P!

@Terminatorinhell: Practice, practice and more practice and a set of extra firm clay shapers and you should be all set!

Not much in terms of updates, but I need to sit down with the wife and see how much I can blow on parts, so hopefully I'll be able to get some more things soon. I think shoulder pads, and bolters will be on the agenda for the upcoming week, but I do have a sermon to prepare for next Sunday, so we'll see what I can get done! I'll keep all informed.

Thanks,

Chappy P!

where did you get the clay shapers and how much did you spend on them? the regular marine torso back and the modified terminator torso front looks excellent. didnt think of trying it that way. now I have something else to mess with.....
I couldn't agree with you more Chappy, i have found the B&C to be a very helpful community as far as the GW world is concerned. I find it great that people such as yourself shares ideas and tips on projects which helps loads of people (me including!) to become better at modelling. I should hopefully have my first true scale photos up by tomorrow!

I use those same tools, though mine are a lighter shade of gray (probably softer). Keeping it wet tends to allow it to move a bit smoother over the GS (saliva works great...) If I want to blend the GS into another area I'll generally leave it dry as it'll catch a bit better.

Nice GS work, and great tools! Anyone that wants to sculpt w/ GS should own a set

Hey All,

@DarkPrincess: Hey thanks for dropping in and checking things out! I was going to use terminator legs with normal marine torso's, but at the time I wasn't very confident with my GS skills. Again I wasn't going to do this project, until I saw a guy on another board do a version of a True Scale marine, and I saw that he used a terminator front with a normal marine back and it looked great, and I thought, "Hey I can do that!" I can do a little GSing, but nothing major.

@Nephren-ka: I bought my clay shapers at a place called Prizma Arts near Cleveland Ohio. But as mikhail pointed out you can get clay shapers online as well. weissenbier pointed out that they do come in different degrees of firmness, mine happen to be extra firm (they are labeled and have a dark gray tip) while others which are less firm, have lighter colored tips. However I found with mine, the GS didn't stick to the tip and I didn't use any lubricant and things turned out just fine! I still have to experiment more with the tools to get the hang of them and sculpting in general.

@Dorns Padawan: Thanks again for your encouragement and I can hardly wait to see what you will do. I am glad to be a source of inspiration as other have been to me. Lately I haven't been too fond of the gaming side of things, but the hobby side with projects such as this has really made it fun again!

Anyway, nothing much to report today, except that I got some more backpacks glued on! So now I have 7 marines ready for some added little bits, arms then Painting! Hopefully on Monday I will have sent out a bit order for another five marines, I think I want to do them in batches of five.

So I hope to work on shoulder pads and gun arms this week as well a getting the drum fed bolters done for this first squad! I have enough pieces to do this squad, but then I need to get more IG grenade launchers to finish the rest of the army! And I need to try and get my hands on 30-40 Terminator deathwatch shoulder pads! Yikes, I am not looking forward to track down all of those!

Well, time to run and watch a little more Indian Jones and the last crusade and then hit the hay! Later all and thanks for tuning in!

Thanks,

Chappy P!

Hey Chappy, have started on my own true scales thanks to you! Have got two sets of legs done tonight. They look ok though am sure with practice and the clay tools that i will hunt down today will help me improve the overall smoothness. Please remind me, they are normal backs with termie fronts yeah? Im going down the route of heresey style Raven Guard. Gonna do a body guard for my Corax which is a WIP. Keep up the great work mate, look forward to seeing more of your progress soon! :D

@Dorns Padawan: Yup it's just a normal Space marine back with it trimmed flat a little, with a small blob of GS to hold the Terminator front on, then just hit the plastic parts which connect with some polystyrene glue! You should be go to go. Not much in the way of progress but hopefully I can sit down with the wife and see how much I can spend on the boys this week!

Thanks,

Chappy P!

Lol good man, thats what i like to hear! Wicked, now that i have found a website that sells parts, i shall finish off my true scales and get them up on the B&C for all to see. Have to admit, its tricky getting the hang of using the GS and making the back of the greaves perfectly round but i reckon it will come with time. Keep up the great work Chappy!
  • 2 months later...

Hey Everyone,

I have a somewhat sizable update for you guys! I went to my LGS a week or so ago to do some shopping, when I came across a sprue of Close combat Terminator arms (thunder hammer/storm shield ones). I had ordered some from an online bit company (to remain nameless) and I had yet to receive my bits, which in turn halted any type of progress to this thread!

Anywho, I bought the arms to see if the would work for the left hand support arms for their bolters and behold, I can now show you guys this!

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1608.jpg

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1609.jpg

and a scale shot with a normal GW marine:

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/Chappy_P/WIP/IMG_1612.jpg

The best thing is, the arms need NO modification to work, other than cutting off the normal marine left hand which holds the bolter! I am super psyched about this! Once I can remedy the issue with the bit supplier and with the immanent release of the new Codex Space Marines, I shall be going full bore on these guys.

As of right now, I am contemplating doing a "count as" Death watch type army, using a color modified Pedro Kantor and Stern Guard vets to represent Inquisitor Sanctioned marines who have access to ammunition which can benefit hunting xenos, psycher and daemon!

Or I might do a codex chapter, so I am still a bit undecided as to what chapter I want to do.

anyway, my wife Is going to be away tonight so I might have a chance to get some more work done on the arms. Once the arms are completely nailed down, then I shall be adding bolt pistols, purity seals, grenades and other such things to "bling" them out. Then it's a matter of deciding a chapter (again whether it be DIY or GW) then paint.

anyway, thoughts, comments and critiques are always welcomed! The Sgt will have a bit more sculpting done to make his abdomen armor look a bit better, or I'll leave it as it is and make it look battle damaged!

Thanks,

Chappy P!

Looks Great! No really, he looks great!

In truth though I'm more interested about the guardsmen. But that is heresy on this forum. :)

=]I[= D , the thought may be heresy, but it's quite simple actually [ and remarkable to look at ]. They would make a stunning representation for indoctirnated troops in your retinue sire.

May the Inquisition have pity on me, as I was aiding an esteemed Inquisitor of Our Lord The Most Holy Emperor of Terra.

Recipe is as follows ; Wood Elf Gladeguard hooded heads/cloaks/feet [ lower body half ] +Cadian Shock Trooper torso/arms/las rifle/acceossry bits.

The major problem Ive found is finding those hooded heads, as GW only includes X number [5] on the sprues when in fact you need Y number [10-30] for your units. Warstore here we come..[ they're out ATM though ]

Hope that helps.

BTW Chappy.. ACE Looking TS Marines.. I have 2 questions about the tools you're using though.. Are they the clay shapers by Royal Sovereign ? Are you using the size 1's ? That's what they appear to be based on the photo.

@Brother Hedron: The Clay Shaper set I own is by Royal Sovereign size 0. their website is: www.colourshaper.com I hope this helps! It was the best 20-25 bucks I have spent on hobby tools. Sorry for the lack of updates, my Real life job as a youth pastor has been quite hectic lately! Hopefully things will settle down and I'll get back to work. I have to sort out the situation with the online bit company before I can move on. They shall remain nameless, but if all works out well, I am hoping to go forth and order parts for about 20 Marines plus the parts I need to make the remain 4 I need for the current squad of 10 I am working on now.

@jcolt: It is easy! I was hesitant at first, but after seeing Doghouse's tutorial here on bolter and chainsword, coupled with Sheep's log over on warseer and finally seeing what Synapse has done both on these boards and on warseer, I had to do the army! Now that I know the storm shield arms work as bolter support arms, I am full on ready to finish this project.

@Dorns Padawan: Hey! How have you been! How are the tools working out for you? Sorry it's been so long without a peep from me until now!

Ok, now I think I need to add a poll to this post...I need to really figure out if I should go with the paint scheme I devised or to go with a codex chapter? I cannot decide! I really feel the pull towards doing the scheme I made up, the red variation on the deathwatch scheme, but I am unsure what to call them?

Also, I am thinking about doing a unit of scouts! I also think I know how I am gonna do them, and it could be a bit ambitious in terms of sculpting for me at least! Let me hammer something out, maybe I'll give it a go before bed and if all works out, I'll post some pictures tomorrow and get people's feedback!

Well, I am gonna run and try something, check back at some point tomorrow for more updates!

Thanks,

Chappy P!
