Painting: Stone Armour Effect

I am planning to make some Space Wolves with a very archaic, barbarian feel -- power armour that is carved like Viking rune stones, chainmail, wooden shield and axe handles, iron helmets...

Here is a step-by-step showing how I get a stone effect for Space Marine armour. Is also great for making Space Marine or Sisters of Battle statues at shrines, Imperial buildings, etc.

Step 1: Black spray primer

Step 2: From 18 inches away, from an angle above, spray Skull White spray for as long as it takes you to count "one, one-thousand." Aim slightly above the model, so that the paint "rains" or "settles" down onto the model. These photos look pretty bad -- but bear with me, it gets better...

Step 3: You will have to give the same exact spray four times in total: front (above), sides and back.

Step 4: Finished! Here is the final product.

That's it!

Thanks TeamLando, wiplash and medusa_ritchie! Maybe some better pics of the finished effect will get some more replies...

wiplash -- that's the effect I was going for, like statues at an old war memorial. I agree, it will look better as a finished test model -- I will paint one very soon. But in the meantime, here's a second test model of the basic stone finish.

I think you may have something here. With some decent raised runes and a bit if battle damage maybe. Especially with the runes and bone and gems contrasting with the stone effect.

Also a bit of blacklining and maybe gloss varnish to the stone only (as in polished stone armour)?

I'd be interested to see the finished article.

I think you are on to something, but it really needs a wash to bring everything together. Either try one of the new Citadel washes, or make a glaze.

The best glazes I know of use Future and a little ink. Add just enough ink to tint the future, but still keep it transparent. A smidge (and only a smidge) of black ink in Future washed over those guys a few times would do a world of good, and help you create that statutary affect.

Korloth Darkwolf: Thanks for the encouragement. The runes could be painted as "optical illusions" using parallel black and white lines to look like shadowed and lighted edges of runes carved with a triangular-section chisel.

Hally: You''re totally right, of course -- but I can't afford a decent airbrush right now. Soon hopefully. When I get one, I can create a much finer stone finish. It's mostly a "concept" tutorial -- if anyone can suggest improvements of alternatives, I'm open to it.

Thunder_god: *Update* I did try a black ink wash, but I may have been too heavy-handed. Anyway, now it looks like wet stone in places, but other spots looks pure black...

very neat idea. The black and white feel a bit to contrasty. A dark grey with a light grey or white might work better. plus the details as mentioned, chips, runes, washsmall pigeon : )

I just started using an air brush. wow, A whole different dimension for sure..
