Screaming Eagles WIP

Recommended Posts

Toccoa wins in my book too. Also lets me use the Assault of Foy as a story later.

About the grey in the joints: According to the fluff I have read, it is armored piping. Now in order for these marines to be able to move like they are said to, while still keeping the joints armored, I figure they aren't going to have metal piping. I figure they would be using something similar to Dragon Skin for their joints. Watch the video, blows me away. I also like the look of the grey, not what everyone else uses, and contrasts well with the green.

Also decided on Plasma cannon in tac squads. The sergeant will have power fist, plasma pistol and bolter. Special weapon will be plasma gun\

++Minor Update++

The rest of the squad has been assembled and primed except for the heavy weapon. I'm doing all the torso/leg/backpacks at once and then doing all the arms. Should be a lot faster. I am really liking the Sergeant...DOH just as I wrote this I realized I forgot to put a bolter on him...

All right, for the remainder of the squad I want to give you guys updates at each stage. I know at least one of you is going to be trying my method for green so I thought it would be nice to see it in action.

This is after the 2nd coat of Catachan Green over a black basecoat. It was actually still thin in a few patches so I went over those areas a 3rd time. First time I have had to do that so I guess I thinned too much the previous two coats. My next step is painting first the black, then following up with all the metal (silver and gold) and then the grey as well.

This last picture turned out really dark so I played around with Aperture for fun to make it look better. The color are a bit brighter than normal but you can see the detail better.

The sample looks great..may a make one suggestion. The eyes, try gold/yellow like the chest eagle instead of the red. Let me know how it looks and what you think?

Keep up the great work.

Like full on paint them gold? Or paint them yellow? Two different things. I'm not wild about the idea of gold eyes but yellow is a possibility. I'll try it on a test marine and see how I like it.

@ Marshall: Haven't thought about that yet. I was going to do some research and see who actually commanded a 1st Squad of a platoon. I believe Bull may have been one. However in that case I may make an exception because I want to do a cigar conversion for Bull when I do model him. I'll cross that road when I come to the rank painting.

I am also re-watching Band of Brothers for like the 10th time. Just finished the Assault on Foy.

Okay, I just wanted to share a thought I had with you.

I hate poking my nose into other peoples' projects and work and such, because, well, that stuff is not mine, so my say shouldn't matter. I also think telling people what to do with their stuff is kinda classless.

Anyway, I had an idea for your fluff, until I remembered that you'll be using each company with their own veterans, etc.

The idea was, if you were gonna go more Codex, would be to have there be an unusual number of the Veteran Company who had started their life as marines in Easy, much like so many Easy men went on to Regiment and Battalion level.

Was just a thought.

Incidentally, I have to say I like the gold eyes idea. to me it feels more like polarized lenses than red eyes do, but... we each have our own tastes.

Well except for the contradiction in the fluff I already have going I like the idea. I feel that a 40k Easy company would have a large number of veterans, but would not consolidate them all into one squad/company. Thats why I am having each company act with its own scouts (replacements) and veterans.

Ok so finished the black wash stage and cleaning them up. Just did the Sergeant's helmet in white. I have decided to do all officers heads completely white. Makes them stand out more. Anyway I just have to give a tip of the hat to anyone that does White Scars or any other white army. White is a  to paint. The close up pics are going to show all the bad parts but overall I like the tabletop look it gives. I'll post some pictures later when the camera gets home.

-=Edit=-

Pictures. So here are 4 of the squad I have finished highlighting. I really like how the sergeant's helmet turned out. Still have eyes and other small details to do. Once the other 3 guys are highlighted and touched up it is on to the weapons and arms. Coming together fairly quickly considering the amount of time I have put in, not much.

Hey guys, idea update. So for some of the models I had the idea of giving them WWII helmets. I found these a few years ago and just re-discovered them --> ++Outgoing Source Transmission++

What do you guys think about giving those to a few guys? Do you think the scale is right for WH40K? (Don't tell the mods but I am also looking at these for a future 101st Airborne inspired Imperial Guard army. Think the scale would work for them as well?)

I have, many times in the past, used 1/35th scale WW2-era stuff to add to vehicles and such (my favorite was all the goodies that came with the tamiya models U.S. Vehicle Accessories kit).

However, it is my personal opinion that you should save the WW2-era helmets for the IG you mentioned. Or maybe just use them on Scouts.

I'm not really sure how well those helmets would look with the power armor.

Another idea I had, maybe to differentiate Vet. Sgts. from Officers would be to maybe have the Sgts. have a stripe of the same green as the armor down the center of their helmets, whilst officers have full-on white?

You know, just to set the officer corps apart from the NCOs.

Just my thoughts. Keep up the good work.

Quick Update:

I have a final tonight and one tomorrow so progress has slowed quite a bit. However I was able to finish highlighting the bodies of the squad. This leaves just small details like eyes, seals, rank and spade. Then on to the arms. I did however manage to do the bases in a way that I am quite pleased with so far. I first based in sand. Primed black. Coat of Scorched Brown (very watered down). Light drybrush of Vermin Brown. Light drybrush of Graveyard Earth. Then a very light and patchy drybrush of Skull White for a frost look. I then mixed up white glue and baking soda. I did about 60/40 glue to soda. I then slapped that on in patches for a settled snow look. They are drying right now before they get a final bit of white glue over them to seal it. Once I glue the guys back to the bases I'll show you guys a pic. May be a bit later tho.

++Edit++ The snow dried and doesn't look as good as I first thought. Going to try a few ways to fix it and post the results for you guys to decide.

Ok so here are the results from my basing adventure:

This is the overall look. The lighting isn't great here. It really does look like semi melted snow. Kinda slushie like.

An overhead look of the snow.

http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q291/beckatusc/IMG_0227.jpg

The far left base is the one you have seen before.

The middle has two types of snow. The bottom patch is the normal snow. The top is the same formula with skull white added. The far left is the original snow with skull white painted over it.

Let me know what you think.

@the jimster: Thanks, I also like to get creative with the sergeant's poses. A strong commanding presence is always my goal. My first real (if small) attempt at a multi layered base. I think him stepping off the curb adds a level to him.

@grindgodgrind: Yah I really like the recipe for muddy dirt I have going on.

Overall tho I'm not sure how practical using this psudo snow is. In order to get a consistant look, I will need to mix it up all at once which is a pain. I'm also not 100% sold on it looking good. While it does look very realistic for melting snow, with the combination of having a dull main color and a muddy snow base, the models look very bland. I'm working up a few test bases in between study breaks (last final and paper due tonight). I'm going to do a base that is just the dirt, with a heavy wetbrush of white for a completely frosted look as well as a base entirely snow covered. I'll see if I can get a good result out of either.

Alright, between my frantic paper writing and studying for my final I took a few breaks and got the Sergeant to about 90% (not including base).

The rank emblem is a bit shaky but I like it for a first try. And its all freehand. He is a Staff Sergeant for those who don't know ranks. Just need to do the markings on right and left shoulders really. Some damage and stuff as well.

Enjoy:
