Screaming Eagles WIP

Recommended Posts

For the snow, if you're having trouble I highly recommend the GW Snow powder over a quick coat of Skull White. It's basically exactly what you've done, but with the snow powder instead of baking soda and some water (roughly 1:1:1 with the three parts). Works like a dream, and you can mix up a giant batch and, as long as you keep it in a relatively sealed container, seems to last quite a while.

Some of my snow bases.

Great success!!! The teacher was unable to upload some of the power points and final review material for my final. This final was the source of much of my stress these past few days and the reason for the slowdown in the painting of the Eagles. I'm sitting in class right now listening to my professor explain how he is giving us the test to take home and email to him by Friday. He is also extending the paper that was due tonight to Friday as well. Rejoice with me brothers, a victory for the Emperor!!! (Ironically the test is on Roman Art and Architecture, focusing on the Emperors!)

Alright time to vote on bases. I took your advice Barret and played around with your technique. The top left base is space wolf grey basecoat with the snow on top. Top right is white basecoat. bottom is just the dirt with heavy white wetbrush. I won't say which one I like the most but I want your votes

well the white looks the most like snow, the SW grey looks like ash or moonscape tbh, although i think it would look even better if it was white with a bit of SW grey in places, maybe even a hint if fortress grey

you could paint the bases in a camo scheme using mainly white then snow flock over the top that would reflect the camo ou give your models (if you give them any)

the drybrushed sand is a big no no :tu:

No on the sand eh? Well I think I may just stick with the white basecoat one. I am not giving my marines any camo scheme so they will actually contrast with the base. Ahhh I dunno. I may drop the whole snow idea and go for mud/grass.

I think the dry-brushed base looks the best. To me if you went with the entire base being snow it may be a little too much white & take away from the incredible white details you've given the Marines. I like the idea of having melting snow with mud underneath & think it would look great with the miniatures. My vote: Go for the dry-brushed snow!

I love how your sergeant came out by the way. He looks great!

Since I know you guys are probably sick of my updates about my sergeant, I thought I would add some more. Well that and I have been so fried from studying that I wanted to goof off more before buckling down to finish the squad.

Front shot. Check out the damage on the PF

Looks good! I really like the damage to the Power Fist - it's very subtle, I almost didn't even notice it.

FYI - I was just down at the hobby shop today & saw some 1:35 scale WWII infantry accessories, there were the helmets like you were asking about in there & it looks like it would be a perfect fit.

Alright, about to sit down to a new painting session and I thought I would give you guys an update on the bases. Here is what I have come up with that I like. Let me know what you think.

Also imagine that the sides are solid white, not all splotchy. I just wanted to get the idea for the sides.

I'm now starting on the arms/guns. I also bought a scout squad with snipes. I already had 2 sitting around (don't know what from, I never played them at all) so I have 7 already. I personally love sniper scouts so I may be adding in some more to fill it out to 10 scouts. Anyway I'm doing a strategy where I don't move on to a new unit until I have finished the one I am on. Keeps me motivated and focused. So once this tac squad is done you will get scout updates.

++Edit: posted two almost identical shots, gave you a back shot for variety++

great base ,, only one thing to say , what about texturing the white snow a bit more ? it seems to flat to me .

otherwise everything is looking awesome

It does look really flat in the picture. I promise it isn't that bad in person. Has a nice grainy look of new snow with the deeper blue below to give depth. I also push their feet into the wet snow to give the impression that they are pushing through the snow.

@Costello: thanks!

The new base looks good although I'm not sure you need to paint the sides white. Just my 2 cents, but I'd make those black or brown to contrast with the actual base material. If you're still looking for opinions on those WWII era helmets, I say leave them off... save them for your IG army.

Love what you've got going so far, keep up the good work.

I'd second the idea of painting the sides of the base black. It'll make for a clearly defined line of what's "model" and what's "framing." Otherwise, on the tabletop, it'll look like all your troops are standing on little white hills.

Spectacular work on these guys.

looks very nice. I have a WWII themed SM army as well. Here are the pics, though you can't see the markings. I used, and might suggest you look into it yourself, the US tank decals from flames of war for my shoulder pad (chapter insignia)

Dude awesome army. Can't see much detail but I'm impressed. Do you have more up close pics?

Update: Finished most of the rest of the squad. Just need final highlights, metals and skulls painted. Bases are coming along nicely and will get their last bit of static grass tomorrow night most likely. Still up in the air about the sides. I think I may go with dark brown to tie it into the dirt/mud look.

Well here they are in all of their almost finished glory! The first squad is done except for a few touch ups. I need to go get some more paint for the plasma gun and the sergeant will have a storm bolter. I'll try to get better pictures for you guys tomorrow.
