jgemrich Crimson Harriers Army blog - Jan30th Update

Here are some WIP shots of my Rhino. Not sure that I love the color placements but it runs with the armies. Still a number of layers to go to block out the whites and reds.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'm also curious about gaps filling on the plastics. At large are most folks using miliput or a like product?

Finally had a chance to get back to this project. I had a couple pieces I needed to finish for Origins (namely a buddies squad of 30 Orks)

So here is my first Rhino and the sgt on my second squad. I went a little heavy on the weathering. Tough to do over the brown but I'm OK with it for a first effort.

i dont think the weatherin is over done at all i mean rhinos probs spend years in the battle fields whilst transportin troops in to battle im sure they dont have marines washing them off every week :)

what colours did you use for weatherin and in what order as my weatherin looks like i spilled brown paint up their legs haha

It actually was a lot of playing around.

First black then chainmail on top for the chips.

Then I put some rust down using VMC Red black followed by Parasite brown. both thinned with some Matte Medium added.

The black (soot) was a mix of Tamiya Smoke and Grey liner by Reaper.

Then I airbrushed Vallejo Model Air Camo Black brown mixed with Black Grey around the bottom and treads.

Also some spots of black grey (seen on the top).

I then stippled Vallejo Game Color Earth and followed by a VMC ochre green to simulate the mud.

Finally I used some brush on pigments to accentuate the rust.

I really liked airbrushed Black grey and the brush on pigments.

The Airbrush around the bottom could have been with just the stippling which I added over the top to make it look more random as the Airbrushing just made it look shaded.

I'll solicit any ideas for chapter names. I can't stop thinking "xxxx Eagles" due to the color.

Apocalypse Eagles?

Armageddon Eagles? (fluffwise a chapter founded after 1st War for Armageddon, skirmished in the 2nd, but was off elsewhere during the 3rd?)

Ash Consuls?

Aquila Brotherhood?

The Emperor's Talons?

The Dusk Watch?

Thanks for all the name suggestions. I've started to try some fluff and names but nothing is sticking yet. I might put my top names up for a vote.

I'm was leaning toward Imperial Harriers or Harbingers of Dawn.

I like the suggestions w/ mountain themes and Ash...might have to do something with that too.

Anyway. Onto the update. Not really for the chapter but in support is this bad boy. I've had him about 10 days and made it this far. Truly a challenging model and a whole lot more to go.

I busted out the Airbrush for a big run on him. I really feel like I'm getting better at using but being my second time I was...way nervous that I might end up very disappointed.

I base coated black with Krylon...then I found this metallic paint at Micheal's.

The Nickel is darker then a silver and somewhere between boltgun metal and chainmail. I really like the color and it would make doing some Iron Snakes a snap.

Next I airbrushed a mix of grey and black. Followed by some green/brown/grey mix.

I'm really interested in what y'all think of the airbrushing so far.

We get cookies for recognising WoW references? Cool... there goes my diet!

Thanks for all the comments.

Red Recipe. everthing is w/ pretty thin layers.

VMC - black red

wash - black ink/black paint mix

h1 - Gw red gore

h2 - RMS - Red (stop hear on the marines)

H3 - GW bloody red

H4 - Blood red/VMC Ice yellow - extreme highs.

A little work on the cockpit. Struggled with the dials and displays. Still not 100% happy but it wasn't getting any better this morning. The displays will get a coat of gloss on the finished product.
