Painting: How to Freehand a Chapter Badge

Recommended Posts

Here is a quick tutorial for painting an eagle head badge. this is the first thing I learned to freehand and it is much easier than it first appears. So without further ado:

Step 1 - draw a small "C" shape for the inside edge of the beak

Step 2 - Outline the rest of the head shape

Step 3 - Fill in the base shape with white (or chosen color)

Step 4 - Ad the feathers to the back of the head

Step 5 - Use Black (or whatever color the pad is) to

clean up the shape and sharpen the points on the feathers

Step 6 - Add the Eye

See? Easy!

Very helpful. Although for Consuls wouldn't you stop after the third stage?

Depends on what you want the badge to look like. I always added feathers on the back end, but you don't have to. This tutorial is really more to show how to build up a complex shape from simple shapes. That's one of the reasons freehanding seems so daunting to beginners. You just have to learn to pick out the basic shapes.

This is great. Do you have any other space marine chapter badge tutorials?

You are so easy to follow and are done rather quickly.

Not on hand, but I might be able to make more. Any particular chapter you are looking for?

Actually it should be open. The eagle head with the shut beak came around with the 4th ed. marine codex (this is also when the White Consuls badge was changed from the same screaming eagle head to the screaming hawk head.) It's up to you which one you use...

Excellent work Cpt Tiberius  This also works for the White Consuls and the Mentor Legion !

Challenge is on, I'll set the Red Talon and Fire Hawks chapter badge Tuto (ok, nobody cares :P ). I'll try the Minautors too.

What about making an announcement on the Tutorial board to see if there are more people willing to share their way to make badges ?

Hey guys, I was finally able to get some pictures of my Black Consuls. I thought I would post them here so you can see what the end result can look like. (please be kind as these were painted about 3-4 years ago.. :) )

Hi all

Sorry I don't have any pictures.

Somebody asked how to do a quick ultramarines symbol.

1. Start off with a solid white circle

2. Paint a straight horizontal flat line at the top

3. Now paint a smaller blue circle in the centre of the white one

4. Finally paint a verticle blue line from the top centre of the blue circle outwards

Hope that makes sence.

When painting chapter symbols try and break down the badge to basic shapes and start from there.

cheers

James

James, I know you, I'm a friend of Tony's. What's doing with your Mentors army? Got any good advice for painting Panther heads?

hi

the mentors are all gone to new homes now, i'll be starting a new marine army in august once i've got some commission stuff out of the way.

not sure on the panther head, i'm asuming you mean similar to the one in you sig?

as i've said it's probably a case of trying to figure out what the basic shapes are and then adding detail from there.

it's something i'd have to have a go at before i could give better advice i'm afraid.

Would love it if you could give us a Space Wolves badge tutorial ;) I'm not too excited about using transfers :cuss Thanks a ton!

Specifically one looking like this:

You can always apply the transfer and then simply paint over it. That eliminates the shinyness of transfers and gives you a precise guide of where to place you paint.

Not a bad idea, I have just heard from friends that the transfers do not look very good. I have not gotten a chance to try it however. I will give it a shot though.
