Thanks for all the responses guys I am glad you like them, it definately helps motivate me to paint more.

Mick_ Yeah I probably mispoke, its been years since I actually played a game of 40k in all honesty so I am a bit rusty on what is what. In any case I'll probably paint him up in red just so he doesnt blend into the tank but I'll have to flick through the codex and see what is what for the future.

Well its been another long overdue update for these guys but fear not I am still plugging away slow and steady. I had the last 3 marines in a state of partial paint for a while then I got distracted painting a few warhammer fantasy minis and playing around with the new washes. I had a couple of long sessions the past few days finishing them up and doing all of the odds and ends like decals and bases etc. I am still struggling to get the primer to adhere well to the resin bases so think I am going to get some fine wet sanding paper and give them a light once over on the smooth edges to see if that helps it out.

The only thing I have left to do is add some static grass, I realized they looked a little bland when they were all done and by then the hobby shop was closed. I was thinking of a sort of dried/dead grass lichen-ish color static grass instead of something more vibrant green. I am undecided what is in store next to paint. I have a dread I have about 75% basecoated though I have been thinking of doing some scouts or an assault squad I have around ready for priming. Also after trying to photograph a full squad I have decided I am going to look into a light cube and some different lights, my lighting setup is poor at best and takes a ton of photos to get a handful that come out semi decent.

I played around with my lighting setup and found an additional lamp I had laying around in the basement and took some more photos. Do these seem better? They certainly seemed to increase the ratio of useable pictures to pictures taken.

Here is the progress so far on my WIP Dreadnought I have been working on. I haven't started any weathering yet and it is just stuck together with poster tack but aside from some details like rivets it is almost ready for weathering, decals, and basing.

I did have a couple of questions though I wanted to run by to see what people thought. I have been weathering my marines to have a chipped ceramic type look and I was wondering is a dread made of the same sort of material? I was thinking of weathering the body like the marines and then the close combat weapon like it was made of metal. Also I was thinking of adding some tally marks on the 'shoulder' area of the close combat weapon to represent kills or some such but wasnt sure if that would look goofy. And last, any suggestions on something to write on the little parchment on the sarcophogous. I haven't ever really done freehand but it looks a little odd just bare. Anyway here it is.

A very nice squad of marines Gumba, very neat painting. The damage looks convincing, especially over the whites. I really think you should keep weathering and adding damage over the transfers aswell as i really like the chipped paint you've shown on that last marine. Not much to crit otherwise, they look good. One thing you could think of is to make the "black lines" a little less wide.

As for the dread, i say weather it like the marines, maybe adding some metal showing trough on some parts if you like. And the parchment just needs a few lines to represent text and it'll be fine. ( i suggest doing this on the pruity seals for all your marines aswell) I have no idea what a tally mark looks like, but worst case, if it looks stupid you can always paint over it, so i say go for that aswell.

Cheers!

Thanks guys, and thank you for the advice Desert Eagle. I am going to continue to weather the decals now that I started using the foam on them just like the regular weathering they are turning out much better than when I was trying to paint the chips into them. I haven't added scribbles to the parchement yet but I think I am going to practice that a little and add it to the dread and the marines.

The Dread is now done except for the aforementioned scribbles on the parchment and some static grass as well as possibly tidying up the freehand. I also tried a new recipe for my dirt after looking at the photos of my marines to get a darker effect that contrasted a little more with the slate and I like the results though it does appear a little flat in the pictures. I will go back and redo the dirt portions on the marines bases as well. I decided to leave out any tally marks as somebody rightly pointed out dreadnoughts are veterans of countless battles and probably wouldn't be too interested in recording kills and I have to agree.

Snozz I have the bits to make my commander but I am not sure if I want to wait to make him untill I get a copy of the new rulebook and codex to see if there are any nifty combinations I would rather take. As for what is next I haven't decided. I finally found the chaplain I wanted and am waiting for that to arrive in the post but I may work on some scouts or an assault squad I have that need painting.

Anyways here are the picture of the dread, let me know what you think. The freehand came out ok for my first attempt especially given that I have atrocious hand writing but I still think it could be tidied up. The name Lucius seemed fitting as that was my name way back in my days in latin class :)

So a little while back my chaplain arrived and I started work on him. Fortunately it was the sculpt I wanted, unfortunately it had a lot of casting flaws I had to contend with so I did the best I could before I got too impatient and started painting He still isnt finished yet obviously and I think I am going to redo the eyes they did not come out well at all, I may even shift them to a blue color as I have seen that done a lot on chaplains and rather like the result.

I haven't done any weathering yet I am going to try that on a test piece first, I hope I made his armour light enough that I can make the chips convincing. I used this chaplain as my inspiration that you could make the battle damage work on black, hopefully mine comes out half as good.

I am pretty happy with the way his loin cloth thingy turned out, and still undecided if I should add scribbles like it is parchment or leave it as it.

Here he is, I am a bit busy the next few days so hopefully next week I should get him wrapped up and ready to go.

Well another long overdue update here. The chaplain is still in limbo as I can't decide if I want to have him on foot or give him a jump pack so I decided to press on and start the next tactical squad. I have the squad all assembled and primed now and finished the first two members of it. I still need to add static grass but I am trying to figure out how to get that last bit of shine out of the bases first ( I mistakingly overcoated them with the wrong spray and two coats of dullcote has toned it down but its still a little glossy).

I am never good with bare heads so decided I would give one a go and the results are ok. I tried to get the stubble head look and I did a ton of glazes of codex grey to create the effect but in the end I think its still too subtle so I will have to fix that. Also looking at the pics I am not thrilled with his eyes but I am trying to learn so overall I am not thrilled with his head but I am not going to completely redo it either.

Here they are, hopefully the next update should be faster it took me a long time to assemble the squad but now that they are all primed and ready to go it should be much faster goings.

I have returned again from yet another far to long hibernation. I had been busy doing applications for grad school and have since started working on my masters full time and moved to a new appartment and city so needless to say I did very little painting. I brought a handfull of minis and as many paints as I could fit into a carrying case back with me a week or so ago to get back into the swing of things. I now store all of my stuff in a dresser drawer and realize how lucky I was before to have a corner in a basement to set up a table with things all scattered about!

So I basecoated the rhino but that isn't particularly interesting. However after that process I realized how much respect I have for people that paint all of these tanks, and that I needed change of color so decided to start working on the gunner a bit.

Here he is so far. I worked on the red a bit and am pretty happy with it thus far, I had a bugger of a time getting any kind of decent photos but these were the best I could manage. I think I left my red ink back where the rest of my belongings are stored so I'll have to pick that up in the next two weeks or so when I go back as I think I want to use that to tie things together on the red and richen it a little bit. Then again I am generally impatient so I may figure out some other way so I can add some damage to him and finish him up.

Oops a small spot of primer showing through under his right arm :)

So I have been rather busy as usual, and took some time to paint some square based models with what little painting time I had. But I have started work on the rhino after it sat around basecoated for probably 2 months :D I only painted a few rhinos way way back in the day and I had to good fortune to use the old citadel dark angels green spray which made the job considerably easier. This is my first ever of the newer generation rhino chassis and I really like the model, but it is taking forever to paint.

The armor itself is coming along pretty well and is probably done except some touchups. On a whim I decided to paint the plasticard armor piece I added to the front in checks and while it added a lot more time painting the white I think it looks pretty cool. I may fix some of the damage on it though as my sponge got a little loose and am not sure I am happy with some of it.

I was thinking of adding dust and mud but I am not sure. I am a bit torn on that. On the one hand none of my other marines have that effect so by not doing it the models will be more cohesive. On the other hand tanks are probably cleaned less and maybe adding mud and dust might be more appropriate. Any thoughts would be welcome as that would be the last thing I added so I have some time to decide.

The marine manning the stormbolter isn't in the pic since I just wanted to get a quick pic of my progress and not having to photograph red makes it easier for me to get a decent one. I might throw in some close up shots later, I noticed when I resized them the damage kind of gets jumbled together.

Any comments welcome as always.

So I was able to do a little work on the metals tonight. I've tried something different than on the normal marines as well its a tank and presume things will be a little dirtier. I really would like to get a dustier feel to the tracks like you often see on military miniatures but am not sure how to go about it. Metals aren't finished but I need to see if I can figure out how to get the desired look without the use of weathering powders, if not I guess I may leave them close to as is.

I also tried to make exhaust stains around the vents but am not certain I am thrilled with the results. All of this sort of thing is new to me so some experiments may work some may not. The last pic is just a closeup of the tracks as I thought it just better represented what they look like in person.

Sorry the pics are a bit crummy, its late and there is obviously no sunlight but thought I'd throw them up now otherwise I would forget.

Comments or track/exhaust weathering tips welcome as always.

Well I'm rather busy so not much of an update here. After spending all weekend working on a paper, and about 15 hours of classes and schoolwork today after 5 and a half hours of sleep I am certainly running on fumes. I needed to chill out and relax though so decided to do some small stuff on the rhino.

If anyone has insomnia problems let me know and I will forward you my paper (warning pad desk before reading as you may instantly fall asleep and hit your head) : The use of soil amendments and phytoremediation in reclamation of heavy metal contaminated mining sites.

Back to my regularly scheduled ramblings. I added the tactical symbol to the hatch and I am really chuffed how it turned out. I hadn't ever dealt with a decal this large but I think it looks exactly how I invisioned it when I created it. I worked up the parchment on the side but cant think of text to add. Also added further exhaust weathering and I think it looks better. I still might do a little work and maybe glaze over parts of it to smooth it out.

I know these small updates aren't the most excited thing but they are motivating me to finish this darn thing finally so that is good at least.

Gah! How did I miss these guys before? The weathering is excellent, done properly nothing else conveys the milleu quite as well. I am going to try to battle damage/weather my Tiger Claws and I will also give your sponge chips a try.
