Desert Eagle
I think those new bases really brings out your consuls in a very nice way. Very good move, an improvment. Not that it really was anything altogether wrong with the previous bases, just that when compared these ones looks better as they don't blend together with your grey scheme... So good call. :) About that terminator, something just doesn't sit right with me regarding the white helmet. It just doesn't look the same as the rest of the mini, or how to express it. I think you need more contrast in there, and the mouth pieces could also benefit from being picked out with metallic paint, or that grey colour as the rest of the minis for that matter. I'd also suggest you go for a darker deeper red with the eye lenses. They stand out..almost like they're popping out of their sockets. I realize it's probobly just about the same colour as with your tacticals, but it doesn't work as well against a white helmet as against a grey one. Just my opinion. Other than that, your minis look smashing, i really like this chapter. Nice painting mate! GumbaFish
Thanks a lot Desert Eagle. I think you make some good points and I felt sort of the same way about the terminator helmet but wasn't really sure what I could do to correct it. I rather like the old metal terminator helmets that had the vertical slits on the sides sort of like the beakie helmets have now, I wasn't really sure what to do with the smoothe sides. I think I got too concerned with using the same colors on the helmet that I use on things like the chest eagle and skulls to keep things cohesive but don't think they work as well on something big like a helmet when compared to a small skull. Instead of shading it more with a pure grey do you think something like a blueish grey or cream/yellow aged color would work better? I think the white might just be too bright on this large surface, where it isn't so apparent on things like the shoulder trim. I think the same might be true for the eyes, same recipe as on my tacticals but just doesn't look quite right here. I am also considering reworking the lightning claws to something a little deeper as well. Desert Eagle
Well, either would work i guess. I'm in favour of using some earthy colours myself, so more cream than blue if it were up to me, especially since you already have some brown on your grey areas. GumbaFish
Yeah I agree I was thinking the same. I thought about modifying what you do on your terminators a bit for the white on the helmets but I haven't been able to find a US supplier of elven grey from Coat'D'Arms. Also I was just thumbing through your log again and I think you have given me the bug to buy some bikes for the army, I never cared for them before but you make them rather dynamic looking and something about bikes just seems to fit right with a bird for a chapter symbol. Kerrigan
Very nice painting! I especially like the chipped armour. You have done this perfectly. I would really like to know how you did this, step by step. GumbaFish
Well I have had a lot of people ask about chipped armor and tried to explain it earlier. However since I was painting two marines at the moment I took some quick pictures of the steps. Sorry if the color is inconsistent, I did this while it was getting dark so the light conditions werent the same for each step! They are lare pics, so be kind :P Step one- Model is all highlighted and shaded http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/tut1.png Step 2- I cut a piece of blister foam, the one on the left is a regular piece and the one I am holding I have narrowed down a bit as it was a bit too chunky at first for my liking. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/tut2.png Step 3- Dab the foam in the color you have chosen for your chips, then I dab it usually 4 times on a piece of paper towel. The numbers give you an idea of how much paint there is after each dab. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/tut3.png Step 4- Apply the chips with the foam to appropriate areas that would see wear http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/tut4.png Step 5-6- Here I combined two steps, but I go back with the color for my chips and conglomerate some into bigger ones and tidy some up or add new ones as I feel. I then go back with the base coat color and remove or narrow down any as I see fit. Arrows point to a small chip I added on the helm, some more detail I added to the hand, and how I have conglomerated several smaller chips on the knee pad to one larger one. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/tut5.png Step 7- Higlight under the chips. I use a highlight just a tad lighter than the highest highlight on the mini as they are so small I find this helps them stand out, especially on areas that cross the highlights of the armour. If using a lighter color for the chips line the upper edge with something like black. As mine are so dark to begin with I just skip this step for times sake. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/tut6.png Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/138982-emperors-consuls-diy-marines/page/4/#findComment-2028085 Share on other sites
Tyrannicide
Very nice tutorial Gumba. Would you mind if I made it an article for the Librarium? GumbaFish
Darth Potato if you would like to add this to the librarium that would be fine with me. I did it rather fast, I could try doing a proper one if something a little more polished would be better suited for archiving. Anywho here are two more marines. Its been too humid to dull cote them so I haven't put them on bases yet as I like to add the static grass on before glueing the marine down. I'll probably wait untill I finish the remaining two, then do all 4 bases at once to save some time. Tried a slightly different approach on the plasma gun as my first attempt looked like rubbish. Not sure I am sold on this either but it will certainly do for now. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/squad28.png Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/138982-emperors-consuls-diy-marines/page/4/#findComment-2028917 Share on other sites

GumbaFish
So I got a little tired of painting tactical marines so I've started thinking about my captain. I am still sorting out how I want to arm him but I have most of the bits I plan on using. I did a little work on his head, nothing overly complicated just some cutting and greenstuff and drilling. I am sure this isnt a revolutionary design for a helmet but wanted something different than my tactical marines. I felt the helmets in this style like some of the dark angels or black templars remind me a bit of a bird, so thought it would be great to make one to fit in with my chapter imagery. Just needs some mold lines cleaned up and I think it will be set. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/head.png http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/head2.png http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/head3.png I am going to work on finalizing some army lists so I can decide how I want to arm him, he will be based on the master of the recruits body. I am thinking just something simple like relic blade, artificer armour, and bolt pistol but may swap in a bolter with hellfire rounds or a storm bolter. If I realy can't decide I will probably just model one of those weapons into the base like he has tossed it aside because it ran out of ammo to cover my bases! GumbaFish
Did a little more work on the captain. Its amazing how long a simple conversion can take between mold lines, pinning, and sanding. His sword arm is just pinned in place but think that will be the final position for it unless I stumble across a cool looking sword to use instead. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/wipcaptain.png http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/wipcaptain2.png Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/138982-emperors-consuls-diy-marines/page/4/#findComment-2038463 Share on other sites
GumbaFish
I took a bit of a break from the lads but I am back at it. I realized why I was having such a hard time with my scouts, I simply don't care for the plastic scouts. So I got out my metal scouts and had a go, the only problem is I now need to find an old metal scout with missle launcher as I only own the heavy bolter one. I revised the fatigues to something that looks more like a real soldier would wear and I really like the results. I still need to apply transfers and do basing. I had hoped to have all of that done, but in my haste I attempted to apply both shoulder transfers at once and managed to ruin them both so I have to do it again :D His right shoulder will have a sword, and the left the usual chapter marking. Anyways I just wanted to throw up a pic as I am rather happy with how this guy turned out. I will probably hold off with decals and basing and just dive into painting the next one so I can do the basting etc in batches of a few marines. I also printed off a new photo background and finally figured out how to adjust my white balance which is making taking pictures easier so hopefully I can update more. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/scoutwip1.png http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/scoutwip2.png His right eye looks a bit funky, I'll have to take a look at that too! GumbaFish
I haven't updated this in a while as I have been painting square base stuff so haven't had any power armor related projects. Here is a WIP terminator pretty close to completion. I changed the way I did the helmet from the previous one and I think it looks much better. I also was unsure how to do the red like the lightning claws on a hammer so I decided to try metallics with a blueish glow towards the head of the hammer. Feedback on that would be appreciated, once it has sunk in I will decide if I will do that for the rest of the unit or just the hammers or scratch it alltogether. And yes I just noticed a few parts are just bare primer that I somehow missed, doh! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/TerminatorTHwip.png http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/TerminatorTHwip2.png http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/TerminatorTHwip3.png http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/TerminatorTHwip4.png Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/138982-emperors-consuls-diy-marines/page/4/#findComment-2114716 Share on other sites
GumbaFish
Finally finished off the last odds and ends and basing for this guy. However, still no chapter symbol as I need to make some decals with them reversed for the terminators and think if there are any other thing I might need to add before going and making some new sheets. Any thoughts on the hammer itself would be appreciated, I think it might be a good compromise of having glowy bits and metallics. Pure metallic ones just dont give the image I have of them. It was a bit of an experiment and I wasn't sure how to go about it but I think it looks ok in the end. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/Terminator_th1.png http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/terminator_th2.png http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/terminator_th3.png The new way of painting the helmet looks much better I think http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/terminator_th4.png (apologies if you read the same thing on TWF, I usually vary the posts up a bit between the two but its late and I am lazy) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/138982-emperors-consuls-diy-marines/page/4/#findComment-2120513 Share on other sites

natsirtm
These are ace bro, colour scheme is sweet. Your weathering tutorial has inspired me to give it a go. The only suggestion I could make is maybe weathering the back banners - they just look so clean compared to the rest of the models. GumbaFish
Darn internet erased my whole post when I finished it! Anywho this is the abbreviated version of what I first wrote. I finally finished off the two remaining tac marines in a big effort this weekend to get them done and out of my site! I am closing in on painting all of the SM stuff I currently have, though the second tank may break my will and make me go insane :) Just a predator (/rhino/razorback), 5 assault marines, 3 scouts (4 if I can find a metal missle launcher), my captain, and 3 terminators left. Two new guys (yeah I forgot to paint the bolter handle...doh) http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/lasttwo.png Full unit (sorry for the darker pics, I am going to get some brighter light bulbs this week) http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/gumbafish/random/tac_squadtwo-1.png Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/138982-emperors-consuls-diy-marines/page/4/#findComment-2137529 Share on other sites

GumbaFish
Yellow is here, I think its elsewhere in here too somewhere. Perhaps I should take some time and aggregate all the recipes into the first post to make things easier if people are curious. -Base coat foundation Iyanden Darksun -1:5 mix of bestial brown : water for the first shading -then 'blacklined' with chestnut wash -First highlight is bubonic brown -Then I think I just added a little bit of something like bleached bone to the bubonic brown for the second and third highlights. Not much needed, it lightens it up a bit. -1:5 mix of golden yellow : water mix was then applied over the whole helmet to tie things together and make it a little more yellow though its effects were pretty subtle probably but I did it for good measure anyways.
