Honda
Such a shame that you went from brutal Nagamaki (like Soulblighter a major bad guy from the Myth series of Computer Games), to a Naginata (I own one of those myself, works more like a spear than a sword). Well, this won't be the last blade that I put in the army, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a nagamaki show up at some point. One of the new data sheets for Apoc features Honor Guard and I have a concept that I am working up for it...and a nagamaki would fit in quite nicely. <_< I must admit that I wasn't familiar with the nagamaki until you mentioned it, but I am glad that you did. It is a sweet looking blade. Cheers, Just wait for the 5th Edition Space Marine Codex, the Honour Guard becomes a proper unit (which you can take if you take a Chapter Master - note not to be confused with the Captains who are titled as "Masters of the Chapter"). With Artificer Armour and the option to take Relic Blades (gives 2+ Strength)! Hubernator
Seconded. Nice models. Although I am a little confused on the colour scheme :tu: what is it?? Honda
Seconded. Nice models. Although I am a little confused on the colour scheme what is it?? Well, the standard scheme for my army is: However, for the command unit, I wanted to do something a little different, yet not too visually distinctive from the rest of the army. So instead of white, I decided to use bronze and also to use the same bronze on the Librarian. That way, I stick with my split scheme, but that one unit will stand out from the rest of the army. They will probably be the only unit with that scheme...unless I decide to do a termie command squad, which I would then do the same way. Honda
Well, the vagaries of life allowed me to get a couple of extra sessions in this week, so I was able to finish up all the figures for the command squad. Unfortunately, my camera seems to be doing very strange things of late, so the photography isn't as crisp as I would like it. Nonetheless, it is better than me drawing stick figures...well, maybe. :) Of the pictures I took of the troopers, these turned out best http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun44091.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun44089.jpg Here is Li http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun44093.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun44095.jpg After looking at this photo, I realized that his left eye needs some touch up as it looks like I was trying to put a pupil in there and I wasn't. I debated back and forth as to whether to give him the Glowy Eyes Effect (GEE) or go natural. My initial efforts on the eyes were less than stellar, but after keeping on it for a couple of sessions, I think I at least got it to the semi-respectable level for table top. At some point I will have to undertake a project where I have to do some eyes as I am not that confident of my abilities when it comes to that very important facial feature. Here's a not so great shot of his buzz cut and pony tail. My intention was to adopt one of the older samurai hairstyles http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun44083.jpg Here's a closer shot of the naginata. The intent was to show energy flowing out of his hand and up/down the blade. I would expect that when he's really rockin' the entire weapon glows. I'll probably do something like that with another figure. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun44078.jpg I also got all the backs of the banners done and finished the front of one of them. This was supposed to be the easiest one and for some reason ended up not being that easy. The light background just didn't want to smooth this morning, so many layers, washes, etc. It's not completely finished, but pretty close. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun44098.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun44101.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun44102.jpg The upside is that I was targeting that banner to look like this and I got pretty close http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun40018.jpg So, I'm getting pretty close to the completion of this squad. Just a couple more banners and we're good. Also, I put together three of my MK. II drop pods for a recent Apoc game and they turned out Ok. They're not completely done, but are in a playable condition. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun42126.jpg I think that's about it for this week. When I finish the other banners, I'll post these guys in HoH. As always, any and all C&C is greatly appreciated! GAR
SWEET! I love the banners. I also really like the mix of gold and black on the command squad dudes. Pictures are a little dark, but I am thining Li could use a bit more shading on the armor. I will have to see it in person to be sure. I think the glowing eye effect is pretty good. However, have you considered doing them like a normal eye, in that at using white where the black dot would be and then gradually darkening the green to the edges. Addd a little scorpy green to the bottom of the brow and a little at the very top of the cheek and a touch to the inside of the nose closes to the eye? I think going for a pure white eye with green effect may not be giving you what you are looking for. However, I think seeing it in person will go a long way. Anyhoo, something to kick around and see if you want to try it or if you are happy with it the way it is. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/139092-apocalypse-lords-command-squad/page/2/#findComment-1658092 Share on other sites

Honda
Just a quick update from this week. I started on the second banner and it's Ok. I'll come back to it and do some touch up work on it as well as the first one after I get done with the last banner. So here's the status so far: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun45006.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun45021.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun45018.jpg On the second banner, I was striving for an "aged" patina type of finish, that you sometimes see on Japanese banners. I sort of got close. Here are some better shots of Blademaster Li http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun45010.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun45011.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun45012.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun45013.jpg I fiddled with his eye a little bit and it at least looks like the other one. I'll check him out a little more before he gets packed into my carrying case. Anyway, onwards and upwards! C&C is greatly appreciated. Two banners down, one to go... GAR
Those banners are getting better and better! I love the sword on the shiny background. its wicked cool. Honda
Anyways these command squad models look brilliant is the naginata using a lego part? The arm comes from the command squad. It's the one holding a banner. The blade itself is cut from sheet plastic. Very quick and easy. @GAR: As usual, my Photo-fu is weak, but you get the general idea. The shiny part has many coats of Gryphnne Sepia and Devlan Mud on it to tone down the shine. I'll look at it again this week and see if I need to darken it some more...but it ended up pretty close to where I wanted it. Thanx for the C&C. Honda
Well, while the warp was messin' with home base, I kept plugging away and finished the banners for my command squad. I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. Each one is distinctive and pretty close to the original vision. They are by no means perfect, but do seem to add a nice touch to the unit. I'm really looking forward to getting them on the table soon. So, here is the work up on the last banner: Base coats http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun45048.jpg All the shading and such, before placing the figure of the Emperor http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun45055.jpg And now with the Emperor icon http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun45061.jpg I was striving for a "middle ages" kind of look to the banner. Also as part of the fluff of my chapter (which I will get in the Librarium before too long), this banner represents a vision that the first chapter master equivalent received as part of his leadership trials. It represents the Emperor sacrificing himself for humankind. Benkei, the chaplain who received this vision, now dedicates himself to atoning for that sacrifice. All three banners http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/DeathRainRun45063.jpg There are more shots in HoH. So a very satisfying exercise. I now have a very distinct looking unit for my army and I am encouraged by these results to try some more banner work in the future. C&C greatly appreciated! DextrousWombat
WOW! those banners look sweet! I like your colour scheme as it makes your army stand out to others on the table top. Honda
How do you do that white? If you are referring to the white in the banner: 1. Basecoat black 2. 50/50 mix of thinned Scorched Earth/Chaos Black 3. Foundation Dheneb Brown 4. 2 coats Bleached Bone 5. 2-3 coats of Skull White + Bleached Bone 6. 2-3 coats of very thin Gryphnne Sepia 7. Highlights in Skull White with a touch of Bleached Bone 8. Recess work with darkened G. Sepia That's pretty close. I was experimenting a bit, looking for a weathered warm white. Honda
Im curious as to where you got the shoulders for your blademaster, ive seen them several times and wanted to know where they come from. They are two shoulder pads from the Company Champion (Command squad box). I spotted them on somebody else's hero and thought that it was a cool look. The tanks in your battle report, the non-40k ones...what are they? and from what? Somebody here used to cast them (they're made of resin). If you are interested, pm me and I'll get his email for you.
