Chaos Codex

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I am considering using a Chaos army when 5th comes out and I wanted to know some positives about the Chaos Codex. A note though. If someone starts complaining about all the faults the codex has then I will ask the moderators to close the thread. Keep it nice.

I am wondering what combos of units and weapons and what not excell, for example, a combat squad with plasma guns and a Icon of _____(enter god here). I am wondering this to see if any of my units I have built currently could stand up to anything. Thanks guys.

Cult Marines are awesome. Each one has its own role to play and purpose to serve.

Generally Icons are pricy and I don't use them. Icon of Chaos Glory on a regular CSM Squad, and sometimes Khorne or Slaanesh on Raptors.

As for weapons, you want to group guns with similar ranges. Don’t use meltaguns and plasma as you'll always want to do something the other one won't do. Double plasma, double melta, double flamer or flamer/melta are great choices, each one for a different role.

Additionally as far as heavy weapons go, Hv. Bolter, Missile Launcher and Autocannon only, and even then avoid them, having 10 guys stand still for one shot (2 or 3 in the case of HB and AC) isn't great. Lascannon is too expensive.

Powerfists are great, not as good in 5th. Mandatory on Plague Champions, as their Initiative makes them strike last anyway usually.

Havocs are good for heavy weapons, but no lascannons here either.

If you want lascannons get Obliterators, or tanks.

Obliterators are awesome.

Remember this when you're making an army: each unit has a role, and you're going to want to come up with a strategy where each role in your army works together to support each other and lead to you WINNING. (most importantly having fun)

Chaos needs to be so careful with point spending, things can get overly expensive way too fast, especially HQ.

Welcome to Chaos.

Here's a brain twister: 2 aspirings, one Berzerker, one Plague Marine. Who gets the powerfist, the low I guy or the guy with the extra attack?

It depends on the role you have planned for the two units. How many berserkers are you fielding? Do they have a transport? Berserkers hit really hard and should be able to win combat so may not need the extra killy of a pfist.

For the plague marines, I think the Pfist is a good idea. They are going to strike last most of the time anyway, and due to their relatively small squad size (due to their cost, I usually field 7) they can't be relied upon to inflict a great many casualties in CC, so the Pfist is good for those sure thing kills. Since I use them to take and hold objectives as their resilience makes them hard to take out, inevitably my opponent is going to tire of shooting them for little effect and will assault them. That's when the Pfist will make its points back.

So really I'd take the fist on the plague marine over the berserker. I think a power weapon on a berserker will be better as it really takes full advantage of Furious Charge; 5 S5 attacks on the charge at I5! Ain’t nutin’ wrong wit dat!

I am an idiot so I have to ask; how much and in what ways do the Pfists change? I know they lose their extra attack but what else happens? Also how long will the Chaos Codex be valid? I know some codices are being replaced like the Space Marines and Space Wolves but since the Chaos codex just got replaced will it be okay for a while?

P.S.On a side note, since the Space Puppies are getting a new codex will the Dark Angel's codex be valid for a while?, and will they make a new actual codex codex for the Blood Angels? Thanks for not complaining anyone.

*inhale holding back rant*

Other then the loss of an attack, no change to fists,

The chaos codex will be "valid" -- until the release another one, and thats looking like years at least (unless you believe the rumors of chaos legions codex being released, but thats also years off as well)

Dark angels just got one, so did blood angels, so don't expect another one of those till you see a redux of pretty much every army, including the inquistion armies, and tau.

the Wolves will be getting their MUCH needed new codex, but if all armies had to wait as long as wolves/orks/darkeldar do for new codex then that'd suck a lot... if you want new codexes every edition play nilla marines, it seems to be how it works =P

Berzerkers have the PF in all of my games. It lets them deal with anything. S9 on a charge with a 4 attack WS5 weapon is incredible. Dreads, tanks... very very worth the 25pts spent.

I'm starting to agree with Berserkers having the fists, I mean furious charge, ws5 aside:

An ASPY champ with 2 attacks base pays roughly 27pts per powerfist attack (including his cost, and his upgrade to champ, and fist)

A Skull champ with 3 attacks base pays roughly 20pts per powerfist attack (including his cost, and his upgrade to champ, and fist)

The interesting thing is when you work the cost of normal Marines carrying an Icon of Khorne, the Aspy Champ moves to 19 points per powerfist attack (assuming its a 10 man squad and he's paying 1/10th of the cost of the icon) however he does so without the +1str from furious charge, without weaponskill 5 and without fearless, all in all Khorne Berserker's are THE place to put powerfists, if you're gonna use them at all.

Good things about it? I'll give you three.

Chaos terminators with the IoT. That 4+ inv save has saved my hide so many times.

I also like Thousand sons marines. Sure they're expensive, but get them within 12" of marines, if you unload your 17 ap3 bolter shots into them, 5 or more of them will probably go down

The nurgle demon prince is also nasty.

noise marines are another good shooting squad, and not to forget assault squad too.

All those sonic weapons shots, then assaulting with int 5...

But the only army that got bent over with the newer powerfist rules was the Black Templars, they don't have vet sgts, and only one attack.... hahahaha!

I tend to use power weapons with beserkers, but I also don't put them in a position to have to charge MC's or a tank. They are troops hunters simply put.
