My Guardians of the Covenant

These pics are of my very piecemeal progression towards 2000 points of Guardians of the Covenant. I started in the hobby at the beginning of June 08 and these pics start with my 11th mini painted ever in my life - I am totally new to modelling and painting. I never modelled so much as a Spitfire, even as a boy... Loving it so far! Lots to learn and a long way to go!

There are no chapter symbols yet since I suck at freehanding and I am trying to work out how to do the decals properly - I am going to buy some spray on varnish for the decals next month and will then sort them all out. I have also intentionally not done any squad/company markings, partly due to some fluff I am mind percolating for my GotC.

There are quite a few in my Gallery, and I will continue to update this thread and the gallery as I go. As a very new painter and hobbyist, I would appreciate any C&C.

These pics are of my first ever Guardians, painted towards the end of June.

All the unbased minis have since been done with some simple sand flock from the hobby starter kit - I will work on them more later.

These next pics were taken around a week later - I did 5 more marines in that time. Work, wife, 16 month old daughter and inexperience pretty much kept me slow  I did not do as many individual shots this time, instead taking a few "mass" shots to get the idea of how my embryonic army was shaping up.

I also did a librarian and a chaplain that I had picked up off of ebay. Both were in pretty poor condition - the chappy's face was almost smooth. I did the best that I could with em I think.

And these pics are of my last two completed so far - a standard bearer and a captain. I am bidding on a robed captain on ebay (an all robed army means that I dont really have a choice but to bid on ebay rather than buy direct) so he may get replaced, but I really like this mini for some reason.

And here is the standard bearer.

I know my camera skills suck - these last pics were taken late last night and I could not use natural light. I also have a mini Olympus 5 megapixel - grwat for carrying in your pocket on holiday, not great for this sort of work, but I will try and improve those skills alongside my painting ones

The SB was also off of ebay and damaged - you can see that his hand had snapped off somewhere along the line.

Thats it for now.

I will take 68 views without comment as one of the following...

1) Indifference

2) Awe at my artistic prodiginess (heh...)

3) Not wanting to sound critical and insult me

If its 1, thats fine. I will live and come to terms with my obscurity. If its 2, then you really need to get out more. If its 3, please, go ahead - I really want feedback.

The robes need another coat or two as there's still some undercoat showing, the same is true for the libby as well. Apart from that, I can't see anything to crit on these seeing as how they're you're first minis.

You should try some freehand, swords are easy enough to do with a fine detail brush

Nice to see another fellow GotC  So far i know of you and Brother snorkle :)

On to the minis: Your metal colours looks great, and as BtJ said, some more coats on the robes? what is your recipe for the robes?

:Troops: Trajan

I am doing mechrite red followed by a slightly thinned Scab Red then a slightly thinner Red Gore layer. Highlights are progressively brighter layers of mixed Gore and Blood, but I keep highlights subtle - not a huge fan of extreme highlights. The black blotchiness is actually far more apparent after using Badab as a wash - I am struggling to avoid a "blotchy" finish. It may seem like a basic technique, but perhaps I am applying the wash incorrectly? Should I be thinning it, or continue to use straight out of the jar? On my next ones I will do an additional layer or two of even thinner Gore to add depth - maybe the relatively thin layer of paint over the undercoat is being accented by the wash?

Have I mentioned the 2nd mortgage that I needed to take out to assemble an all robed army... ye gods...

[EDIT] Oh, and Trajan, where can I find that avatar? Do you mind if I use it as my own?

Well, im not a big fan of the new washes, not yet anyway :Troops: Still hanging on to the inks.

But on my robes i dont use any inks or washes at all. Mechrite red as base, then thinned down scorched brown in the recesses (sp?), followed by a thinned coat of scab red all over the robes, to blend it a bit.

The avatar is one of my company veterans, and of course you can use it. Ive made some other GotC avatars as well, but all avatars are made out of pictures of my GotC.

Hi guys

I know these pics are still rubbish - will be getting a mini tripod soon to help with steadiness, and will start experimenting around the house/garden to try and get better light. Even so, here is my first assault squad, using BT tabards instead of robes. C&C welcome as always. I am aiming towards a good table top standard at the moment - only been in the hobby 6 weeks. I dont expect miracles... and yeah, I know about the mold lines...

Edit: Correct 4 pics in the post now

Looking good mate, I personally think the red needs a bit more layering but that might be the camera.

Thanks. I think its the camera - undercoat sprayed black, base in mechrite, 2 layers of thinned scab, 2 layers of thinned gore, highlights in gore/blood in various proportions. I use badab black as a wash, which "mottles" the red - looks quite good in real life, looks pants in pictures. I have finally got some Baal red which I will try on the robes of my next batch.

i have to personally say those are pretty good looking especially for how long you've been painting.......

lol i went and looked at my first minis(chaos marauders) and yeah..........

i think your metallics are looking Terrific!!

LGD

Thanks LGD - the new washes hide a multitude of sins <_<

For the record, Baal red does not do the robes justice, nor does Devlin Mud. I have done test minis with both and much prefer the mottled, "distressed" look of Badab Black Wash. I am going towards some finished entire squads and will post some more pics soonish. Also kit bashed a robed apthecary... will try and get some paint on him to show you guys when I next post pics.
