Iron Warriors

Recommended Posts

I've been reading the Graham McNeil Ultramarine series, as well as Storm of Iron (yes I know not many like him), and I've found myself liking the Iron Warriors more and more. Theres a certain aspect of them that I love more than the Thousand Sons (my all time favorite chaos space marine legion...for now) or any other legion. I'm wondering what your opinions about them are, fluff wise or game play wise, even both. Have fun.

I haven't seen them played in a game, or researched their abilities or anything like that. But what I like about them the most so far is probably their rivalry with the Imperial Fists that stems back to before the horus heresy, and correct me if I'm wrong on that. Aside from that their power armor with the eventual black and yellow chevrons, the differances between each Warsmith that I've seen in the books, and a couple other stories that I cant quite remember right now, interests me. Of the three Warsmiths in Dead Sky, Black Sun

Honsou is a tactical thinker, and knows the other two Warsmiths he is battling and uses the information against them.

Toramino favors sorcerors over brute force and is much less predictable than his ally Berossus, letting Berossus grind down Honsou's defenses before attempting to make a move.

Berossus is a warsmith in the sarcophogas of a dreadnaught. The most predictable of the three he relies on brute force and machinary to win his battles. His thought pattern is addiquately put as "this results in this,"

And compared to the chapters, and even other legions, there are usually one leader uniting the marines under them. The Iron Warriors have three leaders and conduct their own campaigns against the enemies of the dark gods.

Love em. Fun to paint (and there's a margin for error with all that metal), they have hazard stripes all over, and there's a way to explain cult troops in the army. Eg, you could model some meched out marines with guns for arms to count as Plague Marines; you could say that marines with force field projectors and a unit champ with a big gun count as Thousand Sons; or that marines with bionic, muscular arms and some sick guns are Noise Marines. Not as straight forward as the Black Legion as far as representing cult troops go, but they're fun to model.

Summarised feedback here from an Ex IW player.

(I changed my colors due to wanting to make a personal legion, nothing against being IW, my World Eaters and Death Guard got the same fate)

Playing them back in 3.0, 3.1 and 3.5 it was fun fielding many tanks and obliterators in one go. Known for long range bombardments, and small specialist detachments, I feel they are best represented in smaller games of 1500 or less, or apocalypse games where they are given free reign over the heavy weaponry they are known for.

Siege Specialists, allowing themselves to be cut off from supplies and continue the fight unhindered, rationing ammunition and other supplies with ease. (in 3.5 they had fearless defending obstacles, and gained bonus to destroying bunkers and fortifications) Along with an extra tank, using a basilisk, and being the only chaos with vindicators back in ole 3.5. Which is why in 5th edition, 4.0 chaos codex, that smaller games and apocalypse games they can shine in their true heritage.

Small Example, decent core of troops with 9 obliterators and a small compliment of elites with range, like a few chosen or terminators. Or, go with 3 heavy support vehicles, with a somewhat mechanised detachment, using terminators in elites to gain access to transport option land raiders (like having more heavy support options).

In Apoc, basilisks are a well deserved yes to IW players, having been stripped the option to have them in codex 4.0, IW players have allowed dust to collect on their basilisks until Apocalypse.

As far as fluff goes, Ultramarines, Imperial Fists are ultimate rivals and hatreds, while other chapters such as the Iron Hands, would be targetted for their extensive bionics salvage, or those who have lots of terminator suits to be stolen. Raiding is how the chaos legions keep their sorte loadout.

I like the comments, for some reason I had always got the impression they were one of the less liked legions.

...well you kinda wrong there. I'd bet on them being the most popular legion (maybe except for black legion, or death guard, or world eaters...depends where you live).

Me personally really like 'em. I would get them too if they weren't so popular (I like to be unique with my warhammer stuff, and its no fun going to a tourny and seeing fifty Ultrasmurf players now is it? )...it would be so awesome to get IW, i'd have so many ideas to play as 'em.

A little off topic but I'm currently torn between IW, NL and the scarily religous WB...might have to run a poll.

I would say Word bearers, just for the sheer amount of troop choices you may have... 6+ unlimited(but limited on points) lesser daemons.

Storm of Iron and Dead Sky, Black Sun realy got me interested in Iron Warriors. Also the idea of fortifications and attacking fortificatons have always appealed to me. I did always like Honsou too ^_^. They have some nice fluff behind them, and I am thinking about having a small detatchment of IW in my chaos army. They have alot of character behind them, a very different legion compared to the others. But I don't like oblits/raptors/bikes/demons with IW, seems against their way of war, but spamming traitor guardsmen sounds a perfect idea.

Onyx was awesome in Dead Sky, Black Sun too. Obliterators sound the closest out of those options to their style of fighting. Other than demons which are used, just in their machines of war, or do we not count those?

Love those little Iron Warriors. Mainly due to their fluff and the fact that they use my fave tactic of bombarding the enemy, then finishing them off up close. ( I use this tactic in any game possible, whether on tabletop or computer)...

Oh and they have an easy to paint colour scheme.

Nope, the Iron Warriors 4th Grand Company has over 1000 memebers (not include the 30 odd spam bots or the git memeber who where banned for being bullyies toward other memebers). Also UK GT seen a lot ;)

But yep as you lot can see I am a big Iron Warriors fan, started in 2002 back when the Index came out. Alway like there background. In 2005 brough then back out & wanted to have the army fully converted & have a Star Wars Clone trooper specil unit feel (ARC, Commando, etc...). Also because of the Obliterators as well, use to convert a lot them after seeing my friend Oblits for his thasound son's project for GW Edinbrugh back in the start of 3rd Ed. This was back when Oblits where no like they are now but we could get 18 :D

I'm very much looking forward to a few new project line up for my IW with the update codex/rule book for this year tournament season.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, I got the Techno-Virus about a half year ago - +/- a couple of months- When I had read Dead Sky, Black Sun and Storm of Iron. I liked the background of the Iron Warriors when i first stumbled across it; The battering ram of the Imperium before the Heresy, got fed up with the dirty jobs, turned their backs to the imperium during the heresy and have a burning hatred to Rogal Dorn and all those marines who carry his Geneseed.

But it wasen't untill Christian Byrne made his presence known by building his tournament army in the Will of Iron "saga" that I looked at my Black Templar army and thought to myself; "Frag 'em and tag 'em, I'll collect Iron Warriors now."

I began to defile my Black Templars Rhino and Predator to convert them into Vindicators, and dig out a box of Fantasy Chaos warriors to give my Iron Warriors a more antique look. Some of my Black Templars -ironically- ended up being renegades and filled the ranks of my troops, so now I have two ten-man squads filled with Iron Warriors fielding pre-heresy armour and renegade Templars.

So while the current Chaos Space Marine codex continues it's reign of totally absurdness and lack of induvidual legion recognition, I'll continue to collect and expand my Iron Warrior Army, bidding my time and pray to the four Gods of Chaos that there will be a salvation in form of Legion-specific codexes in the -hopefully- not too distant future of Warhammer 40.000

i love them, everything about them:

the fluff, the (old) models, the oblits, the titans,....

The battering ram of the Imperium before the Heresy, got fed up with the dirty jobs, turned their backs to the imperium during the heresy and have a burning hatred to Rogal Dorn and all those marines who carry his Geneseed.

dosn't Honsou carry IF and IW gene-seed?

all the way back to the war smits...

in the good old times the warsmith was the suprime lord

afterwords they became the lords whit servo-arm

now (in the new dex) they are champions

but i still use the lord version
