Rhinos! Rhinos! Our enemies hide in metal boxes!

No, I haven't disappeared off the face of the planet, I just stopped painting for a while so I'd be fresh when Black Reach came out.

So now it's on the horizon I thought I'd use something to get my eye back in, then I went a bit overboard on some freehand stuff.

Looking good m8,

Although i would give you're metals a wash with black (baddab black i think it's called?? :) )

followd by a drybrush of chainmail or boltgun.

A nice but very simple way of doing tracks is.

1. Boltgun metal

2. Black wash

3. Brown wash

4. Brown wash (yes again, we want most of the metal obscured)

5. chain mail brush (or boltgun if you prefer)

Note: this is with washes and not with inks!!!! if you're using inks use much much much much much much much much less.

Also dusting up you're rhino will break it up a bit and keep it from looking like a big blue lego block :D

1. Scorched brown

2. less Bestail brown

3. Very light bleached bone

should give you some simple dust, also you could do some black around the exhausts.

Well that should add some simpel eyecandy to you're rhino.

Have fun, and as i said, you're style is looking good.

You are doing very, very well to start with mate. Nice to see your trying a variety of different skils in terms of highlighting, freehand etc. My best advice is to practice on some paper, that way you can get used to the shape of the Omega etc. The blues are looking good. You might also benefit from one or two extra watered down layers, but yes, the washes are fantastic.

Keep it up man, your flying through these. They are looking great.

Thanks for the comments, I know that all the metals I've done so far could be better, but that because I haven't been down to GW to buy any more paints since the original purchase (I plan on getting some black, red and brown washes for metal, cloaks/sergeant helmets and gold sections, and some more colours to use for highlights rather than just colour + white.)

Looking great so far, Lucifer, especially factoring in the speed at which you seem to work and the fact you are a first time painter. Very nice.

I second the post about getting the washes, the Asurmen Blue wash would really add some punch to your blue, as would the Badab black wash.

As far as your next purchase, I would recommend the Battle for Black Reach set - you get so many marines in that box it's amazing. You'll have a second HQ, another Tactical Squad, some Terminators, and a Dreadnought. All those minis at regular price would be $120 or more, and you get it for $60. You can always sell or trade off the orks if you don't want them. That's the way I would go.

Great job so far though. Keep it up.

nice army, brilliant for a new painter too, a reccomendation for the rhino is paint a white troops arrow on the top hatch in white i think that always looks cool and if you are like me you could draw it out in pencil or use a stencil

are you still looking for models reccommendations? you mentioned black reach so you dont need any more troops ect. id go for a predator or a devastator squad other than thtt count your pennies buy the new rulebook write an army list or a list or models that either look good or are good game wise and go from there

Wow ! Definitely an awesome job man. Especially if you are just starting out! I know my Marines didn't look like that. And too be honest, I've been painting for a while, but the Ultramarines always scared me. Bright colors make me sad.

But your Army is definitely coming along nicely.

Keep it up

I now am the proud owner of:

I also changed the Rhino on Shiodome's advice, I think the gold rims look much better than the overall gold front plate.

And for those of you who have been wanting me to pick up some washes, I've now got blue, brown and black washes.

Quick Edit:

First time using washes, going well so far.

The ever popular WD test terminator.

I tried to add some battle damage effects, and I'm thinking of trying some lightning around the power fist.

Considering this is your first army, I'd say you are off to a fantastic start. You have been pumping out models, which not a lot of people can do. And trust me, there are no words to describe how good it feels to have a painted army. That, and they look scarier on the table. :HQ:

My first big update in a while, Terminators are complete!

And the whole thing so far:

I've got 2 captains, a Dread and 10 Tacticals to paint next. The Dread is already sprayed so that will probably be first in line, then the original captain (not black reach).

  • 3 months later...

After a long break due to starting uni, this thread returns from the grave! First on the cards after getting home was to paint some more Warhammer, been missing it :D.

The original commander from the pics way earlier in the thread, this time however he's fully painted, and based (which was annoyingly difficult, damn capes).

I do hate the Gold Ultra's. I just Do. Those bloody smurfs get all the GW love! I do like when a different company comes outwith the red or green trim instead. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside!

However I do still give credit where credit is due. I must say these are some great beginner and overall good models, beginner or not. The whole army looks quite uniform as well (I have had the same BA's for a while and there are so many different paint schemes its almost sad  Anyway, is the whole drill thing really worth it? I think having to pay 15 bucks to use a tool that will only drill a little hole is a waste to me. Anyway Good Luck my friend!!

I've actually decided to just get a drill bit and use my fingers to drill out some holes which should be fine for the plastic models, although metal models will require something else, it's probably better to try and buy a hand drill or something from a hobby or DIY shop rather than the expensive GW one.

As for the Ultras, I've already started thinking about rounding off the force a little bit more and then moving on to a different army. Not quite sure what at the moment, but I'm 90% sure it will be power-armoured.

As you say, shop around! I managed to get a double ended pin vice drill from a local hobbey shop, with several sizes of bits and replacements, all for less than half price of the GW equivalent. Same goes for my craft knives as well, definately worth looking around.

As I said last time I posted, fantastic looking models!

You've managed to create most of an army already! Well done! It tooks me a couple of years to get a full force together!
