Making the Sternguard (Updated August 27)

Recommended Posts

Progress report: And ther eyou go folks, the first five of the conversions I've done that will stand in as my Chapter's Sternguard Veterans are, well, done! Although I have to say, I think I overfrosted them with the matte spray...

First:

Ah, now to work on the rest... I AM planning on a full 10-man rollout...

Ace conversions there, 'specially the sergeant =]

They aint amatuer at all, they're top class =]

I especially like the combination of DA robe/Templars Veteran armour on the sergeant.

They rule! Cant wait to see them painted, being a huge fan of sternguard =]

edit : In fact, can you talk me through the conversion for the sergeant? He's just so cool...

I think I used the following for the parts:

5 robed Dark Angel bodies

4 Mk-VIII Collared chest pieces

1 Black Templar Collared chest piece

1 Dark Angel Veteran bolter

1 Space Marine Commander helmeted head with Targetter

2 Black Templar Crusade Helmets

1 Techmarine helmeted head (from the vehicle sprues)

1 Bionic eye Tactical marine Head

5 random selection of backpacks

5 holstered pistols

5 grenades

5 Combar Knives

1 Terminator Power Fist (old Style)

3 targetters

And bits and pieces of stuff for the combi weapons. Very MINIMAL cutting, and I'd think the only drastic thing I had to do was cut of the Dark Angel bolter arm and stick it on the bolt pistol arm.

That was kind of awkward actually... I had to stick the sickle magazines of the bolters to their sides of the guns; the combi-melta has the magazine on its left side, while the flamers have it to their right. I REALLY wanted the drum mags of the terminators though, but I found that I didn't have any terminator stormbolter arms left in my bits bin. :)

Yeah, Ignatius was just being a little oblique about it, I guess. Now, for another problem: I'm expanding the Sternguard into a 10-man team (parts just arrived the other day), so I need to confirm if the Sternguard can carry heavy weapons as well, and how many they're allowed.

As for the DA/BT parts, well, I was going for a different look from the upcoming metal Sternguards, and the robes were just the thing I needed. The Azure Blades are (or were in 4th edition rules) big on convert maneuvers and ambushes, plus the Veterans use them more than the average trooper, and given my lack of skill with greenstuff, they're a convenient stand-in for the Chameleoline cloaks they're suposed to use in the background.

Progress report: Dipping done! Though I have to say, the layering of the shade didn't come off exactly as I expected, due to the age of the dip I used. Oh well, could have been worse.

Interestingly enough, the ACTUAL color gradient isn't that much noticeable, but due to the flash it looks like there was a serious mishap with the dip... When it actually turned out well.

The Fab Five:

Now all I have to do is highlight these guys, and give them a thin coat of Matte Varnish, THEN I can start on the other 5 guys that will round off my Sternguard squad.

A brutal side-effect of the dip I'd used. It's the reason why I'm spraying a layer of matte over them once the dip settles, so to speak (and after highlighting of course).

Really, it'd be SO MUCH easier if there was a satin stain-acrylic mix available.

Ah ok.
