First space marine is done!

Recommended Posts

Thats a lovely strong cold, which is a great contrast to the black :> However the silver looks a little weak in comparison... I would say either paint the main body of the bolter in a matt colour (e.g. dark grey, red etc or strengthen th silver with some mithril silver highlights, and a few weakened black ink/badab black washes.

Also, it may just be that pic, but I cand see his eyes....

Which gold did you use by the way?

Look for ward to seeing more!

Love the gold but the silver bolter really doesn't work for me. Not big on the suggestion of black as, for me, I prefer to not have weapons casings being the same color as any of the major colors on the body of the marine. I think red (either deep or bright) or a deep green would be far better.

Any ideas for a name or chapter symbol?

Thanks for the feedback! It's Vallejo Brassy Brass. The eyes are Vallejo's Scorpion Green equivalent. I might add a dab of that + white to make them pop. I like the idea of a matte section on the gun. Maybe the Camo Green? I'll try a few variants and see what works.

Right now it's a codex chapter (not familiar enough with the other chapters to decide if I want a variant) though I'm concerned about losing the traits system. I change my mind on the name every few days. Right now it's the Fisher Kings but tomorrow it might be something else.

Nice job. Take some black paint and go back to the areas around the kneepads and boot (left leg especially), and make those grey highlights thinner. Also, I think that area you painted yellow (?) on the bolter ought to be red.

Edit: do up the base!

Edit 2: come back with the brass and cover up the areas where you didnt really want the wash to go

Some updates... I've temporarily given up on highlighting since with my skill level it seems to detract from the model more than accentuate it. Regardless, it feels good to have all my basic troops done* plus a few flavor models. Comments and criticism much appreciated.

*minus the bases of course.

Not too shabby. Perfectly good tabletop quality (personally, I don't like highlighting on miniatures :)). They also look very nice as a group.

I think you might find it looked a lot better if you painted the hands bronze as well. A hair color other than black might also be a good idea - you should generally avoid doing hair in the same color as any part of your armor.

Honestly, I really like 'em.

Yellow was a good choice that I hadn't considered. It's a choice that looks good in a group. I'm a little torn on Octavulg's suggestion about the hands but the hair bit is bang on. Definitely get away from black on the hair for the army in general but the occasional figure would be alright. As far as the hands go, maybe paint a couple with bronze hands and see how they look. It's a simple touch up if you don't like it.

I like the color scheme - which is odd because if you had only described it I might have dry heaved. somehow, it works.

that said, some comments: the meltagun model has no shoulder pads. it seems as though you know this, but still.

the feet/hands might look better in the base armour color. I find that when doing what is effectively a single base color plus trim color, the feet and hands should be of that single base color. it also allows you to use the black or a metalic like BGmetal to pick out the little power cables and whatnot. it's an easy and relatively quick way to bring a lot of detail out, and speeds painting if you spray them in the base color (it would slow you if they start black and you use just a brush, but not by too much).

mold lines / drilled barrels. my big sallamander army has them too, but it's part of the standard critisism. for the tabletop, they are no biggy, but it shows some love.

good job with the seals and the burnt muzzles on the meltas.

I love the gun casings - the color and the way you painted them works really well.

I bet they will look great on a table. how do you plan on basing them? I would shoot for darker greens or a good cold grey stone / snow motif to compliment the bronze.
