Boo
So, if anyone bothered to read my long intro at the BA section this is the plog dedicated to the repainting of my old BA. I stumbled upon a couple of boxes in my attic full of BA. So with the new version of 40K being launched I thought it was a golden opportunity to get back into the hobby. So for starters Ive got a tactical dude painted up. I´m not the best painter around, I know that, so please be gentle with the critique. But constructive critique is always welcomed. I aim towards a table top standard and I'm quite happy with the way this first one turned out. Note that I have not based him yet, and when looking upon the photo I realize that he is not that pretty close up. But here he is anyway. http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd189/ododen/AngelsVermillion2-1.jpg As I said, C&C is welcomed! ;) Cheers Boo Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/141943-angels-vermillion/ Share on other sites
son of nocturne
Looks good! the highlights are a bit thick, not to bad, but as this is your first model for a while then the highlights will smooth out quite quickly into painting a few more.. hint hint! ;) Have never seen that colour scheme on a marine before, looks realy good! ooh and even if its been said allready, welcome to the B&C! nurglespuss
I would be tempted to apply that highlight, and then a dark red wash (a good time to try out the new GW inks use the Red with a little badab black added) this should unify the vermillion and red highlights a little more. Then paint up the rest of the model this is a great way of batch painting BTW and its how I usually paint my marines: Aply even coat of base over undercoat of every model, apply highlight 1 and 2, wash, paint eyes, weapons, purity seals (arf arf) etc. in that way the whole squad looks similar and unified and it can progress at surprising speed. I think he looks really great BTW, very strong colour scheme :> Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/141943-angels-vermillion/#findComment-1641314 Share on other sites
Boo
Thank you both! I was tempted at first to paint them as ordinary BA, but as I and a friend was sitting down and painting, he suggested that I instead would paint them as Angels Vermillion. :P I know the highlights are abit thick, but thats something I hope I can improve. :) Ive painted four more marines, that I will post up here as soon as I can get pictures of them. Mal
You've got attention to detail down pat, good choice of colours, the only issue has already been raised... the highlighting. As pointed out you will quickly learn to tone this down to where you want it, but my advice (and you dont have to take it) is to add an extra step in your current highlighting, to help blend the colours together. But looking good, I'll look forward to seeimg some more. Boo
I actually applied one more layer of highlights on my more recent models, ie my Vet sarge and Heavy weapons dude, and I think the effect is much better. But Ill post pictures on monday to get some C&C on it. :P Cheers Boo Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/141943-angels-vermillion/#findComment-1643339 Share on other sites
Boo
Okay, so I said Vet sarge and heavy weapons, but as it turned out, they are not quite finished yet. Anyway, here is a plasmagun dude and an ordinary marine. The picture is not great, and some spots are darker than they appear in real life. The helmet on the plasmagun is not as dark as it seems, and I have painted his eyes green, the pic just didnt want to show it. :tu: And about the highlights on these ones, I did not make an extra highlight, and they look about the same as the first one, but Ive tried that technique on the next two. Here they are, C&C are much appreciated. http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd189/ododen/P7280534-1.jpg Cheers Boo Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/141943-angels-vermillion/#findComment-1644112 Share on other sites
nurglespuss
Hi there, ues looking great! much more of a combined effect :> cant wait to see a whole squad. My hardest choice would be base colour and skin colour (on any helmetless marines) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/141943-angels-vermillion/#findComment-1644129 Share on other sites
Boo
hehe, thats actually what I'm about to decide right now. My vet sarge is helmetless, and I dont really know how to paint his skin. I thought I would base it bestial brown, highlight with bronzed flesh and then highlight again with elfflesh. But that might look too bright. Ill try it out to get some comments on it. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/141943-angels-vermillion/#findComment-1645659 Share on other sites
nurglespuss
Cool :> I would tempted to use dark flesh as a base and work up using mixes of elf flesh/dark flesh for the highlights :> Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/141943-angels-vermillion/#findComment-1645675 Share on other sites
Boo
Long time no see dear forum. If anyone remember this plog, anyone? ;) I'm in the process of painting up my old BA as Angels Vermillion. And progress is slow, but here is a finished combat squad, or half a tac. :cuss The sarge is not fully completed, and I dont really know what to do about his banner, thoughts on this? :) Anyway, here they are in all their glory. http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/5010/paintinglog4ow7.jpg Comments and criticism is as always appreciated. Boo
Small update! Working on some jumpers. A vet sarge and a trooper. I just need some advice on how to paint the power weapon my sarge has. Ideas on this would be greatly appreciated Cheers Boo Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/141943-angels-vermillion/#findComment-1687809 Share on other sites

Boo
Ive finished two jumpers yesterday and finally got some pics of them. And here they are, a vet sgt and a jumper. Note that I have not yet painted the chapter markings and still not painted the power weapon. I'm actually looking for some advice on that one, because I kind of have no ideas for how to paint it. ;) Anyway, here they are and I must say that I'm quite satisfied with the way they turned out. But as always I would really appreciate any comments and criticism. :P http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd189/ododen/Jumpers-1.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/141943-angels-vermillion/#findComment-1695475 Share on other sites
Draakur
They're looking very solid, nice shade of red. Keep em coming, good start man  One thing I don't see done that much is a primarily white power weapon. You could go for a light green really overhighlighted into white for the majority of the blade or something similar? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/141943-angels-vermillion/#findComment-1695533 Share on other sites
nurglespuss
I would say power weapon colours are a choice between blue or green. Personally, I would choose blue: White base, mithril+white glaze, touch of grey to the mix for the shading round power relay on blade, when dry, stark white, thin highlights along edge. Make up wash of chosen blue (1 part blue, 5 parts water, 1 drop of washing up liquid) and thinly coat blade. Repeat untill a pale, but definate blue appears (usually 4 coats). Now the fun bit. using a detail brush, and some thinned (not watery) blue (the colour for your wash), paint a discharge of electricity down the blade, take your time, and start at the base of the sword. Now wash again, repeat with lighter shade of blue on electricity (doesnt have to be exact, just thin), wash, repeat with lighter shade, wash repeat with lighter shade. You should end up with an almost 3d effect to the electricity in the sword. This can be done with any colour btw :> Hope that helps!! ps. wow! I just checked out Carpe Noctem, creepy! Lookout! he's behind you! Whose behind me?! Everyone is! and they know all about you. Boo
Oh thanks for the tips! I will try them both out. But I'm not really sure about glazing, simply because I don't know how to do it. Ive checked out the glazing guide by lunchbox but it didn't really help me much. But anyway, I'll post some wip pics of my results. :P Nurglespuss: You did? I thought the site was down? Haven't been able to get on it for a couple of days. Who is behind me? ;) Cheers Boo Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/141943-angels-vermillion/#findComment-1695587 Share on other sites
nurglespuss
Ahh glazing 101: Buy Klear floor pollish (very cheap for how long itll last you!) KLEAR SOmeone gave me that tip a long time ago, and its ace. My method of glazing (simple) ad 1 drop of colour, 6 drops water, 1-2 drops of Klear (should result in a very thin water mix, oh and mix well). OK thats the glaze mix, you may want to make up a little batch to store in an empty paint pot etc. Now if its light colours, then I use very pale shades of the colour over white as the base, and add a few highlights, up to white. when dry, apply glaze evenly. Leave dry, apply, dry, apply, dry etc. until you reach the colour strength for the bright areas that you like. Now the fun bit. take a small ammount of your glaze, and add a bit more of you 'normal' colour to it, along with a tiny drop of a related colour that will darken it slightly (add more Klear if neccesary). apply this glaze, careully, to the recesses, folds etc. like shading. It may take 2-3 coats to achieve the depth you want. When happy, thin out a little of your original glaze with water and reapply over the whole thing. THats what works for me! Cheers! Boo
Cheers! Well I don't really have access to that right now, and being extremely inpatient Ill give it a go with just highlights and a blue wash and see how it turn out. But when I get my hands of black reach I will also try to get some of that klear stuff. ;) Ill check if I can find something similar here in sweden. EDIT: This is how it turned out. I'm quite happy with the result. ;) I will surely give your glazing tip a go and will of course post the results here. Thanks for the advice nurglespuss http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd189/ododen/Jumpersgt-1.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/141943-angels-vermillion/#findComment-1695666 Share on other sites

Boo
Oh, Hi again Forum. It's been a while, shame on me I am sometimes a slow painter and sometimes a fast painter and sometimes I just should not be let loose amongst paints and brushes! Anyway, lots of stuffs been going on, but that's life I guess, haven't really had time to paint that much. But, I've managed to complete a whole tactical squad! and a rhino! These guys are supposed to be the close combat guys, riding up in their rhino to make the enemy taste the emperors vengeance in the form of rapid bolter fire! And they also escort my captain in to battle in 1000pts games and see a lot of cc action, therefor Ive given them all bayonets. Without further ado, here they are. http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd189/ododen/Painting_log-6.jpg I know that the quality of the pic is not the best, but I will get my hands on another camera to get better pics. The flash has made them look a lot darker than they are in real life. I'll get the pics of the rhino up as soon as possible! Please feel free to drop a comment or two, your comments and criticism are much appreciated! BrotherAtrox
Your painting is improving greatly! I must say I really like your marines. Not just because they're a BA successor and inherently awesome....but you've achieved a really nice shade of red. It's deep and saturated. Looks great. Boo
For sanguinius and the emperor! Thank you! I'm very satisfied with the shade of red and I think that It looks really great. glad you liked it too. ;) I could use some feedback on the rhino, I want to make it look weathered, like it's seen a lot of combat. As it is now, it looks brand new almost ;) And also, I'm going to paint the badge on the front better, I promise! :) http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd189/ododen/Painting_log-4.jpg http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd189/ododen/Painting_log-5.jpg Okay, as always any comments are appreciated! :) Cheers Boo Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/141943-angels-vermillion/#findComment-1777577 Share on other sites
Shortsonfire79
NICE!! I really like the BA symbol, and the text on the circle, in the 2nd pic. I want you to finish basing your Tac squad, and then give them a nice coat of matte coat. Like BrotherAtrox said, your painting has GREATLY improved. keep it up.
