taLLis
I found this armless guy when cleaning out the random bits and bobs i gathered whilst at university. Thought i'd have a crack at my own DIY chapter using him as my foundation. http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/picture.jpg This is the scheme i want to use http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/smphp-1.jpg If started writing some fluff here http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=142237 I'm painting my first vet sgt at the moment and will post shortly any ideas or opinions are welcome :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142276-diy-chapter-shining-phantoms/ Share on other sites
nurglespuss
Looks great :> very good scheme. All I would say, is that perhaps it needs a colour to break up the white and gold? at the moment they look like relations of the Celestial Lions :) which is no bad thing (brilliant colour scheme that). I'd be interested to see weapon colour (I would say dark muted grey) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142276-diy-chapter-shining-phantoms/#findComment-1645526 Share on other sites
taLLis
The concept is slightly lighter than the actual models, which are more of a copper color, but i do agree that it is quite close. Here is my first veteran Sgt. Its just the basic colors at the moment but i think i will use the bone color for the veterans helmets what do you think? i added the red to the shoulder for that extra color but i think it may need more. http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P290708_1308.jpg http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P290708_1310.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142276-diy-chapter-shining-phantoms/#findComment-1645541 Share on other sites
Brother-Chaplain Kage
If you blacklined the models really well, it would probably help break up some of that large metallic surface. Painting the knee armor a different color for identification purposes(company, squad, etc) might be a good idea, too. Shoulder pad trim also, once you get to that point. I do like the bone armor for the vets, and the scheme overall. nurglespuss
Oh yes, that looks even better on a model with a more detailed surface :> I really like that scheme. Yes the bone helmet works very well. I'm not sure if the red crux works, but then again, I'm never happy wth those things, I think though that it may look good in a mid tone grey with light green wash (like old stone). And looking at the pistol, the black body (I know its just UCoat) is the way to go. Yes a very very attractive looking army idea there :> Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142276-diy-chapter-shining-phantoms/#findComment-1645560 Share on other sites
taLLis
On my way to completing my first Marine, still a fair bit to do, his weapon has not been completed as i am still unsure on colors for it, plus the chapter insignia is missing but will be added when i have my final idea for it. I'm also not too sure about the exhaust vents being the same as the shoulders, what do you think? http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P290708_1731.jpghttp://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P290708_173101.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142276-diy-chapter-shining-phantoms/#findComment-1645795 Share on other sites
nurglespuss
HMMmmm me either, I think once you have the symbols on (squad markings/chapter symbol) it will look better :> which white are you using btw? taLLis
The picture is slightly bright, it's actually based with bleached bone then mixtures of bleached bone and white. I think your right about the insignia, maybe quite a large one with darker, bold colors. GrimTeef
I think that the white on the vents blends too much with the white on the shoulder pad insets, distorting the outline of the figure. I think you would be better off doing the vents as you've done the bolters. Would match your scheme and preserve the outline of the marine. taLLis
yea i agree there, wasn't entirely sure when i painted that part. Does anyone know of a good guide to doing squad markings, insignias etc? I not really a fan of using the ones they give you. Plus in terms of basing the chapter i was going to use their homeworld, however it is a bronze/copper colored world (which turned their armor the color it is when they first arrived, then they susequently changed it) , would it conflict to much and be to similar? taLLis
My 2nd Veteran, I must admit i have never done any conversions at all before so changing this guys arms about a bit was my first real attempt, even though its only a small change. http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P300708_1920.jpg http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P300708_1918.jpg http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P300708_1919.jpg I think i got quite a powerful commanding pose. The base will be changed and will be slightly higher which is why he is looking down. Plus, does anyone know of a good guide to doing squad markings, insignias etc? BrianBlessed
Hi, I like your colour scheme. You could always use a fine pen for the squad insignia. Imperator Mos
Looks pretty alright to me. Keep the bone exhausts, it's unique. What basing scheme are you going with? taLLis
I wanted to have the bases reflecting their homeworld, which is a copper/ metal based barren planet. I don't want it to be the same as the armor though so was thinking of an oxidized copper green with a mix of fine and larger rubble. I'm not entirely sure on how i would replicate this though! maybe something like this, in terms of tones http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/TEE1652.jpg Any ideas? Cl4d
I say you can make it the same color but get a lot of dark washes in there and do the oxydation with green/turquoise. Tyrannicide
Nice painting there Tallis! :) I especially like the second veteran, the conversion featuring the power fist is so subtle but looks awesome. I think I'll have to snatch that, when I get around to building my army. Prtyjedi
Yeah, that's some awesome painting. The pictures are a bit off (over-exposed? i dunno) but what we can make out is really cool. The veteran looks great too, and that's exactly how you get into modelling - small steps, starting with a little repositioning. taLLis
My first Veteran is nearly completed but for his weapon, exhaust vents and bolter, the latter i am still undecided on. I tried to take some better photos this time but am having trouble as i only have my phone to do so. His weapon is made from the glass-like minerals found on the chapters homeworld, i think i will keep that theme with most of the veterans weapons http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P310708_160301.jpg http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P310708_1603.jpg Any suggestions are welcome Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142276-diy-chapter-shining-phantoms/#findComment-1648566 Share on other sites

taLLis
A quick very WIP update on my 2nd Veteran Sgt. Just worked out the basic scheme for him. Not too sure what color i should make the material, any ideas? http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P010808_1010.jpg http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P010808_101001.jpg http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P010808_1011.jpg Also made a start on my chaplain, still very WIP but basic colors are there http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P010808_1034.jpg http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P010808_1033.jpg http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P010808_103401.jpg Any C&C is welcome Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142276-diy-chapter-shining-phantoms/#findComment-1649511 Share on other sites
taLLis
Pretty much finished the 2nd vet! I'm really happy with how he has turned out so far, but there is always room for improvement! Could you give us a run down on your colour scheme, what metallic are you using and black/white undercoat? Thanks for the kind words mate It's a black undercoat followed by dwarf bronze, (i find it works better if i do two slightly watered down layers of this instead of one thick one) Then some light silver highlights Then it's a couple of washes with chestnut ink (The first heavier than the second) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142276-diy-chapter-shining-phantoms/#findComment-1649610 Share on other sites
taLLis
My chaplain is slowly getting there!. I'm not too sure on the head though. Would it look better if he was wearing a helmet?
