Old legion fluff

This isn't another "what's fluff and what not" thread (even though I am a fluff-nazi myself), because it's seems a rather controversial subject lately. Especially with the new codex scrapping the legion-rules.

No, this is quick question adressed to you devoted veterans. I'm obsessed with legion fluff and some time ago there was a thread discussing fluff or somethign and somebody mentioned that of the 9 legions only 1 one (BL) was undivided. It was mentioned that Iron Warriors were originally devoted to Slaanesh and the Night Lords to Khorne. It made me wonder what gods the Word Bearers and Alpha Legion worshopped, if they even existed back then. I see them both as potential Tzeentch worshippers, one being manipulative/scheming and the other hungry for ancient lore with a open book as asymbol. Maybe the pre-heresy TS colours and the post-heresy WB colours are a remnant of that time and that both Magnus and Lorgar have written a book about Chaos.

So, anyone got a clue?

I've heard that the Alpha Legion was originally aligned with Tzeentch back in Rogue Trader, but I have no idea of how true that is. I've never read Rogue Trader, and I've never read any other background information that states as much. I've also heard that there was a Primarch who could turn invisible, but I don't know if that's true either. Given his stealthy nature, I figured it could have either been Alpharius or one of the two missing Primarchs.

Now as far as I know, the Word Bearers have always been Chaos Undivided. They worship all of the Chaos gods equally and get so preachy while doing so, that their entire reason for conquering worlds is to force the inhabitants to worship the Chaos gods and erect vast temples in their names.

Also, the Alpha Legion and the Word Bearers hate each other, but there's only speculation as to why this is the case.

Yes I know that IW's were orig devoted to slanny, I never heard b4 that NL were dedicated to khorne. Actually if anything that seems bass ackwards to me. The NL feasting on fear thing seems very slanny to me. And the seiging of fortresses would seem to drive IW's toward khorne. Historically prolonged and bloody seiges would drive the attackers to be VERY violent and bloodthirsty once they finally breached the walls. And of course in the IA, IW's could take brzrkrs as breach assaulting troops.

I've never heard of WB's being anything other then worshiping all of the chaos gods equally, almost as parts of a whole. I did not know the game existed in RT days, so someone might be able to correct me.

Also as far as I know, AL were always basicly renegades, not really worshiping chaos gods at all, just got tried of working for the empire and went rogue. Again RT b4 my time, so ...

A few days ago a guy posted on here that AL had always be wking for Tz with out knowing it. All their planning and scheming and sabotage, was all Tz inspired, but Tz was so sly about it that they didn't even know they were doing his bidding (which is also very Tz). The guy had some good points and laid it out pretty well

There was a brief run-down of the Legions in Slaves of Darkness, the book that dealed with Slaanesh and Khorne.

The banners of the Emperors Children, Alpha Legion and Iron Warriors where together on one page:

- the EC were dedicated to Slaanesh and had their patrons mark on their banner

- the IW banner showed an IW marine. It was described that "few doubt their intend after seeing it and that few survive to tell the tale". (their intend was described as being dedicated followers of chaos in 2ed irc.)

- the AL had a yellow bullhead with six limbs holding a red ornament that went through its skull (lol). The banner was said to be as twisted as the ALs minds and bodies.

The banners of the Black Legion, Word Bearers, Night Lords and World Eaters shared another page:

- the BL banner had no iconography and was pitch-black. They were dedicated to NONE of the gods and had access to all god specific units.

- the WB had a banner that resembles their current pre-heresy badge. A book in front of flames with a dog-snouted worm piercing through it. The worm was said to represent corruption dwelling from within.

- the Night Lords were followers of Khorne using bat iconography.

- WE had the same banner they have today.

Also, the Alpha Legion and the Word Bearers hate each other, but there's only speculation as to why this is the case.
Their cultist cells are often opposing each other. This rivalry has spread to the Legions themselves.

So there was nothing saying that IW's or AL were dedicated to slanny ??

They banners were just on same page as EC.

But the BL and WB's banners were on same page as WE's and neither BL or WB's were dedicated to khorne.

Unless there was something more some place else, I don't think IW or AL were ever ment to be dedicated to slanny, people just saw the banners on same page as IC and assumed. but like I said BL and WB were on the "khorne" page and are not khorne armies.

Actually there are differing opinions as to the Iron Warriors. The StD page showed 3 banners and 9 shoulderpads. The three blue pads in the top left were clearly Iron Warriors. The three green pads in the top right were clearly Alpha Legion. At the bottom of the page there were three pads all with Slaanesh iconography: one was gold with a purple trim which clearly matched the colours Emperors Children standard bearer in the centre of the page, the pad immediately next to it was purple in the same shade, however the last pad was blue (albeit a slightly lighter shade) with a big blotch of yellow (the IW banner had a yellow border) and it was almost entirely in front of the Iron Warriors banner..

Addendum: the chaos rules for Space Hulk listed the Word Bearers as worshipping Khorne alongaside the Night Lords and World Eaters, but didnt mention Iron Warriors or Alpha Legion.
