Magnus Thane
I've finally ordered some troops to reinforce my Black Legion force. It's basically CSM's with Plasma, a Predator, Termies and some Oblits so far. I ordered a CSM box to have some standards. And 4 Lascannon CSM's to deal with vehicles. My question is though... should i have 1-3 Rhino's in my army? Or is going by foot good enough? After all i don't use berserkers. Deacoknight
Having one or two rhinos in an army is never a bad thing. It gets the marines into a better position. Under the 5th edition rules, they are a little more survivable as well. the jeske
csm/pm/1ksons/zerker squad should always be mounted . also it looks like you trying to build a gunline list out of csm . dont do it . it doesnt work with or with oblits+lash. chillin
I agree, even w/ "run" in 5th ed, you are still going to want rinos, gets your troops there faster and in protection. Like knight said vehicles are more durable in 5th as well + they can ram (been waiting for that rule for years) on a side note, I would not use LC csm's or havocs, too expensive. Rely on oblits for your LC's or meltas for tank bustin, csm and havocs are fine w ML, AC, and HB's for 1/2 the pts. Deacoknight
Not only the speed factor, but Rhinos provide cover for troops now that terrain doesn't really block very much. Having a small bunker between you and the enemy is a good thing, in my opinion. Euraldius
Take as many Rhinos as you can afford!!! In 5th edition they have much better survivability, and you have free smokes. What more could you ask for? They also make it easier to claim objectives, and remember that you can claim objectives from within a transport. Also, they are not death traps, so you don't have to worry about your troops dying when a vindi shot takes out your rhino. Actually, if you have a plan ahead of time, you don't need a ton of Rhino's because they can act as battle taxis. Joah from Alberta
Also, if they are destroyed they become dangerous terrain, very useful to have positioned in front of your objective. Sception
To add a dissenting note, rhinos are easy kill points for your opponants, even if they are slightly more survivable then they used to be. And run does partially mitigate the mobility issue, and running infantry moves through terrain easier then a rhino, and 5th edition likes big units of troops (like, bigger then you can fit in a transport. I'm right now experimenting with a little of both - a couple units in rhinoes with special weapons and Undivided Icon, and then one big unit (16 to 20) on foot with nothing but the icon of Khorne. It's too soon to say if one works better then the other, or whether my theory that points that would otherwise be spent on 55 point champions are better spent on just more guys will pan out. With the crazy cost of champion gear these days, and the debuff to fists, I'm leaning towards simply not fielding champions in troop squads at all unless I'm fielding a greater daemon, and even then only naked champs with no further upgrades. Joah from Alberta
Yeah, you have the right idea malisteen. I didn't realize that rhinos were kill points. That's a pretty fair balance, still worth it tho (until I lose a game due to kill points that is). Here's to rhinos, and may you never lose a game fielding them due to kill points, Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142548-no-rhinos/#findComment-1650856 Share on other sites

Magnus Thane
Hmmm tough choice. I was going to go for 3 big 10 man CSM units. Each with an aspiring Champ. And an Icon of Chaos Glory. Plus lots of plasma. I suppose i could put them all in a rhino though. My main foe will be Necrons though, won't they easily blast away Rhino's? Dràyhèn
For me, squads of 10 marines in Rhinos w/Undivided icon, two specials and a fist champ have worked well enough to keep them. Think, two or more big and scary squads of Chaos Marines with a transport and weapons to kill, maim and burn anything and everything that comes on your way. They are more than capable of defending themselves in close combat. You almost never run with rerollable LD10 unless you lose a combat, and with two attacks per Marine and a powerfist, that's pretty hard with a full squad. Also, that icon of yours acts as a teleport homie too, never forget that. When in cover, you usually hit first, and 20 attacks hurts anyone. Everyone has kraks & frags for free and even your Rhino has smokes already. And Rhinos really are a must have to Chaos Marine squads other than Thousand Sons and Noise Marines. That rhino helps you to easily close in for objective or change position to a more suitable one. And after all, it's just 35pts for a moving cover with Twin-linked Bolter which you can use to redeploy or capture an objective. Many times it has snatched that objective or finished depleted squads. I recommend. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142548-no-rhinos/#findComment-1651751 Share on other sites

Same logic goes with saves for wounds. You could say: hope you never suffer a wrap around wound on you Champ and fail the save. Champ is obsolete. Better you learn to play without than with. Magnus Thane
Thanks guys i guess i'll pick up a rhino or two when i can. As for Aspiring Champs i'm putting one in each squad still. Obsolete or not, i find them fluffy and fun. ^__^ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142548-no-rhinos/#findComment-1652484 Share on other sites
