Aradiel
I have decided to replace my aging (and heavy) terminators with the new plastic ones. This will be the 3rd (as you probably guessed by the topic name ;) ) incarnation of the army, the first being made of the old plastics and assorted generic metal termis, and the second made of the classic metal deathwing terminators. So far i had resisted the new terminators to some extent (bought a few to replace the plastic termis from space hulk and to make a squad for my legion of the damned force) as they are far to generic for my taste, but carring around two tons of metal gets one tired rather fast, and after seeing a deathwing army from a friend, made of new plastics with forge world shoulder pads (they look nice but still not DA enought) i decided see if i could Dark Angelise them more. After a lot of rummaging in the bits box for apropriate parts i decided that i had a green light (thank the Emperor and the Lion for the DA vet and ravenwing sprues), i ordered a few deathwing shoulder pads from FW and this is the result: This is the "command squad", the models are half painted as they were intended for the space hulk game, equiped with thunder hammers and chainfists, gear not in the basic rules, but i never got around to finish them, so they got canibalized for the deathwing mk3. Apart from the standart bearer only the squad sargeants have that small heraldic shield on the left shoulder. All the termis will have the cerimonial dagger (a must for me) and assorted DA decorations, usually in the legs (like the metal deathwing models) http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P6230011.jpg Both the apothecary and the standard bearer had some parts donated by their predecessors ( the storm bolter for the banner guy, the apothecary bits are more obvious) http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P8060003-1.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P8060001.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P8060002-1.jpg This second squad were re-assigned from the legion of the damned (as if the flames were not obvious enought :D ). The sarge has that big insignia on his chest, because i had filed of the detail and sculpted some ribs with green stuff (they looked like ribs... sort of) http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P6230012.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P6230013.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P6230014.jpg In the 3rd squad you can see more of the look i intend for the models. The sarge had his sword replaced with one from the ravenwing sprue http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P6230016.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P6230017.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P6230018.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P6230019.jpg The 4th squad, same as above but the sarge sword got swaped by our power mace (his arm is blue because it belonged to a plastic librarian for space hulk (another unfinished project) and his head is from the plastic chaos terminator lord http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P6230020.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P6230021.jpg Now for the top brass (aka Belial). They dont look exactly the same (the legs are diferent in all of them) but there are common elements, as all have the same shoulder pads, head, the iron halo thingie on top of the armour, and since there will be only one on the table at any time, the diferences are not that important. http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P6230008.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P6230009.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P6230010.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P7050005.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P7050008.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P7050006.jpg Check this space for some painted models soon (when im able to finish them) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142930-deathwing-mk3/ Share on other sites
Isiah
What? 82 reads and no replies, shame!! They look great Aradiel. Some really neat touches: the Standard Bearer's fist-mounted storm bolter and the Apoth are all looking very characterful. But what does it for me is the TH/SS Belial – he looks much better than his on-table performance that's for sure, very very nice. Also a quick note on the daggers, it's a good wink back at "old" Deathwing, I wonder why there weren't a few (5 isn't too much to ask for) complete scabbarded daggers on the DA upgrade sprue precisely for this purpose? Anyway great work. Cheers I Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142930-deathwing-mk3/#findComment-1655341 Share on other sites
Chaplain Lucifer
I really liked the touch of the daggers. very old school. keep us posted on developments. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142930-deathwing-mk3/#findComment-1655417 Share on other sites
RayJ
This work is top-notch. It's getting me inspired to go out and get plastic termies so I can redo my entire group of deathwing. That's sort of a bad thing right now though, because I have to pay the university for next semester's classes in a week or so. :D Keep up the good work! Aradiel
Tanks for the comments. Isiah: it must be a stealth post, lost of scanning, no lock on´s ;) And i agree with you, Belial with TH/SS is the most cool looking of the lot as well the most useless  For me the daggers are as much a simbol of the deathwing as the feathers, altough the feathers are more recognized and since i have a sucessor chapter, the daggers seem far more apropriate as i don´t share on the plain´s world incident. The few feathers i have around are more related to the angels part of the legion backgroung. Now some coloured pics: originally the armour was of the same colour as the rest of the chapter, dark angels green with gold shouders, but i used the new fluff from 5th ed to repaint them. Since the time of ending is at hand, the chapter inner circle as determined that the armour should be repainted black, to prepare for the final battle were the legion will once again fight as one. I also share the DA simbol, the winged sword (hey, if the crimson fists can do it so can i :tu: ). Usually is black over a gold field, in this case i inverted the colours, altought i still have doubts if the simbol should be red like the original from the legion. Any opinions are apreciated. Starting with the top brass (Belial, or more precisely Master Aradiel of the Dark Knights of Caliban 1st Company) http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P8060003.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P8060005.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P8060006.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P8060004.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P8060002.jpg The first two finished terminators (i have 5 more half finished, the rest will have to wait until i can buy more undercoat spray) http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P7310022.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P7310020.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P7310021.jpg And a dred (as if it was no obvious enough) http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P8060007.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P8060009.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P8060008.jpg Now i could use some opinions on the way i should paint the apothecary, as i can´t make up my mind. There are two ways, the 1st is the classic all white with the right shoulder black. http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/tsm1.jpg The 2nd is the armour all black with the helmet and one arm white. http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/tsm.jpg I think the 2nd ties the model better to the rest of the army, taking into acount the change of colour (and the reason for it), but the 1st makes him stand out more. Decisions, decisions :( Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142930-deathwing-mk3/#findComment-1655646 Share on other sites
Isiah
Stunning. The metallic gold is very nicely 'antique' and looks great with the black. Daggers look excellent. Yeah the Apoth – all white with black shoulder pad gets my vote simply because he'll stand out more from the other models. Cheers I Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142930-deathwing-mk3/#findComment-1655656 Share on other sites
The Defiler
They look really good... (black DW looks always good anyway ;) ) Keep up the good work ! About your apoth' I'd say go for the 2nd scheme.. it has some kind of old school feeling which suits well with your 'not bone' colour scheme.. the def' 1.000pts of unpainted black deathwing still waiting... :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142930-deathwing-mk3/#findComment-1655708 Share on other sites
Chaplain Lucifer
My vote for the apoth is the second scheme.. all black with white arm Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142930-deathwing-mk3/#findComment-1655711 Share on other sites

Wraithwing
I'm really loving the pre-heresy black armour you've got going on there. I think a bone white arm and shoulder would go well with the black armour, as opposed to the black on white. Great work so far. Love the addition of the daggers. I'm trying to reflect 2nd Ed Deathwing with my colour choice, but didn't go as far as the daggers. Wish I had now! Aradiel
Antman677: do borrow, do borrow :eek . Just a small aside, those simbols are to thick to bend properly, so you will have to file them a bit to thin them, them bend them with the back end of a pen or a thick pencil (against your finger or hand its possibly the best way) to give them the proper shape, then check on the shoulder and bend some more as needed. Just be carefull to not file to much as the wings will fall of. The rest of the squad is ready. Now i have 2 more terminators and another dread already undercoated to finish, the other 13 termis and 3rd (yet to be bought) dreadnought will have to wait until i can buy more spray. Then i will have to get some more termis to make a few extras, such as models with chainfists and heavy flamers. http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P8070002a.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/rrP8070003.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142930-deathwing-mk3/#findComment-1656393 Share on other sites

Aradiel
I work by shifts, so it depends. I was not at the last GTS because of that, geting of work at 8am to go to a tournement it would end with me looking like a zombie, all drooling and staring vacantly at my oponent :) Job permiting, and if i get someone to give me a ride there (not having a personal transport sometimes sucks <_< ) this will definitly be the army i will take. Until then i intend to use this guys on the next store tournement i attend. By the way, the GTS is played at 1800 pts, correct? HJL
wow, these are looking much better, i really like your Belial with thunder hammer and storm shield. although perhaps you could make him a bit more blingy so he stands out more. Aradiel
well, he is the only model in the army with a hooded head, and has that halo thingy over his head, and unique shoulder pads, but i´ll take any sugestions :) , i can always had a few bits to the models what i would have loved to do was give him a robed body, power armour style (like that terminator on the first page of the 3rd ed codex: DA) but my sculpting fu is not strong, so i guess he will have to settle for the hood ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142930-deathwing-mk3/#findComment-1657243 Share on other sites
Tko
Ok, so I'm going to ask the obvious question here, but the awesome daggers are just made with various sword hilts and plasticard? Aradiel
Finally, i managed to finish one more terminator. This time is the standard bearer, the apothecary is nearly finished as well. http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P8130003_2.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/caalsigo/deathwing/P8130004.jpg I really need to find a place with more light to take these pics, they are too dark  Its hard to see, but the banner is painted dark angels green Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142930-deathwing-mk3/#findComment-1661788 Share on other sites
atra angelus
Is that banner freehand? Or waterslide? Sheen makes me think transfer, but the coverage makes me think freehand. Either way great work, I really like it. Maybe the sheens just the finishing varnish/sealer. If it was freehand, any tips? Very great model! Doc Faolan
Just for a thought... Wouldn't a terminator bolt his banner onto his back, so he could keep more Emperor Smashing power going with that offhand? Aradiel
atra angelus: I wish it was freehand :) . I printed the banner, cut it the right size and glued it to the plastic with watered down pva glue (glue on plastic, place banner, put more glue over it, the paper gets a bit soaked and bends easely but once dry wont tear). The sheen its probably the varnish, i use a satin one. Doc Faolan: Its a possibility, but personaly i dont like back banners, its far too samurayish for my tastes and besides it would be a problem in low roof areas :) . As it is, he has a 10 foot adamantium club with a scythed angel in the end :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/142930-deathwing-mk3/#findComment-1662112 Share on other sites

Gillyfish
Very cool Aradiel - I too vote for the second Apothecary option. I've also been working on some Deatwhing recently - I went down the robed body route, although I would like to add feathers and knives to make them more 'Deathwing'. I may have to borrow some of your ideas as well. If you're interested I'll try and post some pics up for comparison. Anyway, the paint job is certainly cool and the way you've done the banner is really clever - that's going to be a great looking army!
