Assaults, Cover/Terrain and Initiative

Sorry if this has already been covered, I did seach and couldn't find the answer.

When assaulting in 5th, if you take a dangerous or difficult terrain test during your assault move, you strike at Initiative 1, if you don't have offensive Grenades.

I've got two questions on this;

You usually have to take those test if you're assaulting thorugh cover, and this rule is under the assaulting through cover section. But what happenes if some other rule makes you take a Difficult/Dangerous terrain test when assaulting, that isn't related to the presence of any cover, like Dameons assaulting Grey Knights (for example, I'm sure there are other cases). Does the Initiative Penalty still apply?

Conversly, what about units that totally ignore Difficult/Dangerous Terrain tests (like Harliquins). Do they get to ignroe the initiative penalty entirely, as they never have to make the test, regardless of how much cover (or other rules) they run through? If so, Harliquins no longer have to spend points on Grenades...

Assaulting Through Cover, P 36 - first line "If...Any model in an assaulting unit will have to go through difficult or dangerous terrain as part of its assault move,..."

moving through and being effected by (normally or ignoring, as in your case 2) are different. affected or not, the unit did "go through" DorD terrain. - they assault at I1 if without offensive 'nades.

Conversely, models moving "as if they were moving in difficult ground" (rights of exorcism, P8 C:DH) do not "go through" DorD terrain, and do not suffer additional penalties to their Init. value.

This is perhaps, more tactics than rules, but, Grenades come bundled in the same upgrade that grants Veil of Tears. I don't think you'll see too many Harlequin troupes opting to go without...

Night, but the rule in question is in the second paragraph (I think..) Where there is no mention of cover, or moving through it.

Paraphrasing (don't have book to hand :) ) it said something like;

"when being charged the defenders can shoot at you etc etc, to represent this, any unit that has to take a DorD test as part of the assault move assaults at I1".

(Sorry for the terrible paraphrasing! :))

You normally only take DorD tests when moving thorugh such terrain. But don't Rites (and things like Slow and Purposeful, or even in the Ad Mech pdf one of thier guns) that make you move as if through difficult ground make you take a DorD test? So the rule in the second paragrpah is satisfied, and you assault at I1 if you don't have offensive Grenades.

LoL! Didn't know that (don't play Eldar, just face them! ;) )

But even so, the Grenades are redundant now, aren't they?

Gent - you may have a point.

As I read it, the first para lists the 2 disadvantages of assaulting through cover, then describes the first - having to take the DorD test as described in the movement rules. the second para is a description of the changes to the actual assault rules (Init 1 penalty for assaulters) as the second. I believe this to be an extension of para 1 but, yes, it DOES include the statement about making a DorD test - so harlies/other units as listed by phred, etc... may be imune to this. notice that cover is no longer granted for assaulting models having to run around a wall or series of obsticles, like in the 4th e, so assaults have been "un-covered" in large part, anyhow, while shooting has seriously gained in this regard. maybe the intent is to make cover specifically for models who both moved through DorD AND had to make such a test. it does fit with the fluff on the same page...

5th ed rules resolution: talk it over with your opponent, agree and continue or roll off and continue.

as for the mole mortar, I'm not touching it until I see the rules printed. could go wither way.
