Squat
Hi, I've just finished my first Black Templar and would like to attempt something with a bit more colour into it (as opposed to what I've done already, Dark Angels, Black Templar's and an Imperial Guard Diorama.... which I can't post here which is a shame, I'm very proud of it). I don't want to do Blood Angels as, I have to say, and sorry to anyone that has them, but I'm just not really a fan of the colour scheme, so I decided on ultramarines (unless anyone has a better suggestion!?!?) However, I don't know how to start them, I know that sounds stupid, but I've never attempt one before and have read many different ways to do it, dry brush ultramarine blue, base coat with regal blue, basecoat with midnight blue and blue ink.. Can someone help me please?! if you could post your way of doing it, with some piccies it would be such a help! I have used the search function but can't find a guide for painting ultramarines! Again, if anyone has any other chapter suggestions please let me know, I'm always open to idea's!!!! Cheers! Thraximus
If you go poke into the Ultramarines thread you'll probably be able to find lots of people there to help you. I don't have Ultramarines, but I did paint them at the start. I would personally just basecote with Ultramarines Blue. Basecoteing in Regal Blue is to me too dark for Ultras. I should know, MY marines are Regal. :) And you know, you can always paint a mini however you want. But, I may be one of the few non-Ultra players who actually LIKES Ultramarines. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/143045-ultramarine-colour-scheme/#findComment-1656228 Share on other sites

metcalfedan
Just look in the current (4th ed) SM codex, there's a great example of painting ultras in there. RWJP
Basecoat of Mordian Blue, plus a highlight of ultrablue works a treat. (I haven't used the washes yet so i dunno about those.) Stargazer
For another suggestion of an army to paint I would say Mortifactors as all that black and bone looks awesome if it's painted well IMO Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/143045-ultramarine-colour-scheme/#findComment-1656430 Share on other sites
Karangelos
For mine I always just do a base of chaos black, then ultramarines blue, then go into various high lights and washes. but basically yeah, chaos black then ultramarines blue. relatively quick and simple. alexious
I typically paint my ultramarines this way: prime black basecoat necron abyss ultramarine blue asurmen blue/blue ink wash ultramarine blue 50-50 ultramarine blue - ice blue ice blue extreme highlight This ends up with a brihgter ultramarine than the current gw ones, however I like it. Squat
Right, managed to get somewhere, basecoat applied, face completed (just about), chest eagle done. Can you peeps have a look at the pics and give me any tips or advice on how to proceed next? The basecoat was done with the mordian blue (first time using foundation paints). http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee165/DaddyAL_2007/ultramarine1.jpg http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee165/DaddyAL_2007/ultramarine2.jpg http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee165/DaddyAL_2007/ultramarine3.jpg All comments are more than appreciated. Thraximus
Looking good there! :D However, from the pics the marines look subtly purple. Have you thought about a layer of Ulramarines blue to go over the Mordian? icallitsoda
nice clean job assuming mordian blue is darker than ultramarines blue, i would next go over the armor with ultramarines blue to give them that familiar look.. you could leave some deeper areas a little mordian if you know what i mean.....
