Black Legion Army Blog

Thanks! As I've mentioned, the Word Bearers aren't our primary focus, as they're just Chosen. But today I put together a banner for Melchor. Backpack banners are very evocative of loyalist Marines, and that works for us. The banner is a resin piece taken from a Forgeworld kit. This is just blu-tacked together, so forgive the odd tilt:

The collar on Melchor looks better for some reason now. I'm not sure if you filed it and created sharper edges, or the picture is just farther away and you didn't even touch it. Either way he looks nice, and I'm waiting for the daemon weapon he will be wielding. :tu:

Bit of column A, a bit of column B. I did try and neaten it up a bit, but it's not perfect. Equally, when you're used to seeing things eight million times larger than real life, you start picking on things that you don't tend to notice as much in real life.

Damn it Mol! I've only just bought that command group for my Militia army and already I want to steal the banner for my BL!

It suits the figure really well, just make sure you don't block too much of it with the weapon.

(You do Renegades as well?!)

You raise a good point, and that's why I'm now considering that the axe might work better for Melchor than the sword. (No doubt Nick'll enjoy hearing that.)

Anyway, I gave Melchor to Nick yesterday because I move ninety miles away on Saturday to university. So hopefully I'll cajole him into taking some pictures before he paints him. I'll let you guys know. :P

The renegades are a long term project, im still gathering ideas and parts. They're going to be the first wave of my chaos army, with the daemons and Black Legion following behind.

your converting skills are great, two things though.

1) ive been meaning to make a spear but i dont know what to put on the end to make it sharp and i was wondering what piece you used for the small pointy end of the polearm.

2) you could give the chaos lord and Axe and a Sword

must say i really like these guys, really emphasize what to me is the most frightening kind of Chaos Marines- the embittered, cynical reavers; methodical, efficient, utterly ruthless. the simpler style of the armour really works, especially the berzerkers who look exactly like i'd picture BL having them. good job!

Sorry for the late reply - the pointy bit on the big Berserker's chain-axe is a bayonet from the Chaos Space Marines box. It's intended, I believe, for the heavy bolter, but it worked well enough that I used it.

As to the Chaos Lord, we've gone for the axe, and I have to admit that it's grown on me much more.

Thanks, Lysimachus! That was a great response, and really embodies what we were going for. The Berserkers are a huge favourite of mine. Nick's after some Plague Marines at some stage, and I'm planning on going for a squad of heavily bionic warriors, to show the injuries they've sustained in ten thousand years of campaigning, and how that's not stopped them in the slightest.

In the meantime, I got given a very battered Khârn the Betrayer model. I figured I miight as well convert it - so this is my plan, blu-tacked together. I'm not quite happy about the hand with the skull - I need an unarmoured hand, so I'm looking through my bitzboxes for something appropriately sized and positioned. The power axe will be replaced with Khârn's original Chainaxe head. Talking of heads, that's one of my biggest stumbling blocks. I've been idly considering putting Scout Sergeant Telion's head on him, and using GS to extend his beard and give him matted, tangled hair. Tiberius has suggested I use a bare head from the new Warriors of Chaos stuff coming out... I don't know. Any thoughts are welcome, though I'm definitely keen to save money where possible.

Also, Nick accidentally left these behind, so I thought I'd take a picture for you guys; he's been working on rhinos for his 500 point list, and has ordered some forgeworld doors. Inspired, I believe, by Insane Psychopath, he's been detailing the top-hatches of his rhinos, though using plasticard. This is one set of hatches, and he has another (I think slightly better) which'll go on his other Rhino. They're slightly imperfect, but that's exacerbated by the surface I put them on to take the photo. They do look better on a rhino chassis. Check these out, and hopefully I'll get you some other photos soon. :HQ:

Nick just came round with some genestealer arms so I blu-tacked together two more Gribbles:

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z121/mnesimache/Black%20Legion/Gribble-d.jpg

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z121/mnesimache/Black%20Legion/Gribble-f.jpg

Those gribblies are awesome. If I may make a recommendation- when you do some more of them have the genestealer arms providing the locomotion. So have the arms mounted on the base to support the squig body in the air. I think that will give a nice dynamic pose and a couple guys like that will balance out the look of the squad as a whole rather than having them all with arms out in the air in roughly the same position.

-Lupercal

Thanks for the feedback! :P I think we've tried pretty hard not to look like all the arms are in the same sorts of positions. If you compare them to the original Gribble we did you can see that they're a little different. The pictures don't convey it well, but the first of those two in my last post really looks like he's skulking, crawling along using the claws, which I really like. The second one seems like he's about to swallow a Space Marine whole. :)

The idea you had about providing locomotion with the claws is an interesting one, and one I'd be keen to try out. If you check this picture, the third squig in (which I've used for the crawling Gribble) would perhaps be the best candidate for it. I am also considering having a Gribble devouring a Space Marine/Ork/Helpless Guardsmen (haven't decided yet) in the same vein as Lionel Labreuil's 'Watch out for that squig'.

Awesome, more gribblies!

The Khan conversion looks good, the only thing im not sure on is the ork skull. Not sure why yet though, i'll let you know when my brain decides to work.

As for a head, there's some real mean looking heads on the marauder horsemen sprue, they could be worth a shot. Some nice axes on that sprue too.

I might go for a human skull, as they're smaller and easier to manipulate - I've also managed to find a better hand for him, taken from an old gorkamorka model. Fingers crossed, I'll fiddle around with it a bit more and get some photos eventually. Nick's not really going to be using him for anything for a while, so it can sit on the backburner until someone I know finds a decent head. Tiberius suggested looking at the new Warriors of Chaos stuff, and I saw this guy, who quite interested me... I dunno. Expensive just for a head!

But it's a damn sexy head ^_^ If I didn't already have plans for it to go in a suit of terminator armour i'd send you mine. Even so, the axe arm could be useful as it separates under the shoulder pad.

Its a gorgeous enough figure to finally get me deciding on a fantasy army.

And guess what.

Its red.

Here's a few more BL pictures - some with paint! I came back home today to find Nick's been doing some painting whilst I've been gone, so I've taken some PIP pictures of Melchor, our Lord - and some pictures of his second squad. Nick's pretty close to a 500 point army (painting-wise - he's playing 1-1.5k games at the moment) so hopefully I can get pics of the army as a whole in the next few weeks.

The second Squad:

Melchor:

We have a slight problem with Melchor. You can see the banner in the last picture - we're trying to decide how to paint it. Our palette at the moment is basically red/black/gold/white/silver - we don't know what combination to paint the banner in. I think a red banner with a white star, but Nick's concerned it might overpower the model, especially from the back. Any input is welcomed. :D

Must........resist........painting..........Black Legion..........

Damn it Mol, I finally get back on with some 'Bearers and now I want to break out the black paint again.

Really nice start on those, especially the armour on Melchor, the highlights are great. You'll have to pull the colour mixes from Nick's mind for me.

As for the banner, how about a parchment type colour? I'ts an odd choice I know, but I think it would suit the 'functional' nature of the force. I did it on a champion's loincloth a while ago and it works really well. My only worry is would it pull over well to the larger area?

This was a basecoat of graveyard earth highlighted by adding kommando khaki to graveyard until you hit pure khaki.

I'll ask Nick about the highlights on Melchor. Whilst some people criticised the rank-and-file troops for being a bit plain, Nick's spending more time on the characters. The thing is Nick's a chronically lazy (though skilled) painter and it's rare for him to have a painted army (which is probably why his last two have been BLACK Legion and BLACK Templars...) so I'm just glad he's getting somewhere with an army. He wanted something that paints up quick and looks effective which he can then go back to at a later date - but he's taking more time with Melchor. I had to twist his arm to extract some promises that he'll give the Bersekers some attention, though - I'm proud of those guys! :)

Parchment for the banner is something new - something I hadn't considered because it's adding another colour to the palette. Like you said, an odd choice, but then the guy you posted was one of the inspirations for us starting Black Legion, so it's definitely a suggestion I'll pass onto Nick.

Thanks! :)

I still owe you that Castigator model... I think I lost the head somewhere. I am having a lot of trouble converting the arms for some reason. The body and legs are done. :cuss

Anywho, cool lookin' models, mate. I really like the head conversion on the Chaos Lord model. The Chaos star on the guys loin cloth is also quite nice.

I believe, by Insane Psychopath, he's been detailing the top-hatches of his rhinos, though using plasticard

Yep that be me, notice my name being use a lot around the fourm recently ;)

Your friend Rhino hatch dose look cool, but (don't mean this to sound bad) some area do need tide up. Best thing (what I done) was to get the size of the Rhino hatch & then try get a rough guess of the size I wanted my icon to be so there all looking even. For me as siad I just took the hatch, did a rough drawing then tide it, once I was happy I trace it out, double tape into the plasticard/stryene & then cut with a little bit left over, then I would file to get it all looking good & again not mean anything bad, just some tips on how I done mine.

Your own Black Legion look pretty cool so far, you should look that Chrsitain Bryne from the White Dwarf for some more ideas.

Nick said a while ago that he was after a "brute", a Lieutenant of Melchor that could do all the 'heavy lifting' whilst Melchor did the plotting. A sure sign he's transitioning to a major league bad guy. This 'brute' should be in terminator armour with lightning claws. I scrabbled around today to find some stuff, and this is what I came up with:

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z121/mnesimache/Black%20Legion/Brute-01.jpg

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z121/mnesimache/Black%20Legion/Brute-02.jpg

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z121/mnesimache/Black%20Legion/Brute-03.jpg

I get disheartened sometimes by models that only really look good from a single angle - I hope this won't be the case with this guy - but I think he looks really cool from the front as shown in the first picture. To me it emphasises the air of malice and the bulk of TDA.

Also, if you're a fan of Aerion the Faithful, you'll know that everyone during the Great Crusade had a cheesy handlebar moustache. ^_^
