Color Test Grey Knight terminator

For all of you who have seen the power armored Grey Knights in the "Red Menace" thread, I had mentioned that I would be painting a squad of termies in that color scheme as well.

Here is the first one:

It was fun to do some different color layouts on this fig. Lots of minor little things.. even the heraldry. I have done at least 60 other GK's and this is a new style for me as far as the heraldry goes.

It looks very good and the scripture on the halberd shaft is a nice little touch (great use of unobtrusive freehand writing).

The colour scheme itself work but for the colour test the white looks very grey.

I do not know if it's just the photo but the main armour has a very big value range that corresponds more with a grey. For the white colour impression to work either all the non-white parts would need to have a value range that is much more restricted and lower or all the white parts would need a more restricted and higher value range (or both). As it is it now all the main parts (except the gun and blade) are oscillating around some middle values with not enough contrast to imply a high value for the main armour.

For example, at the moment the blue and green wires on the back of the gun arm seem to have a higher value than the main armour. This is caused by having the dark mass of the gun near them which amplifies the existing value contrast between these parts.

Here's a few more images of recently completed terminatprs:

For me, what lets these down is the blades of the swords. The finish you used (green wavy lines) seems a bit amateurish compared to the rest of the model, the sort of "coloured stem that wiggles across but never leaves the central ridge of the blade". I'm not sure its even as well executed as the rest of the model

It's a stylistic thing, I cannot knock the standard of painting as it is far better painted than I could attempt. It is just clear that you are capable of doing far more with what is essentially a flat surface. A more interesting blade would really make the minis pop

As for the rest of the mini, though, beautiful :P
