Shadow Chaplain
The colours are intended to be sorta chaos-y due to the fact that this chapter by all accounts is sort of heretical. The Shadow Chapel also as a secret black ops chapter needs a darker colour scheme. Regardless of those facts, I just didn't want to paint all my chaplains black and white, because I don't like that scheme on black templars and I would hate it on my army, so I wanted a colour scheme with more flair. As well, this is my first and only time painting purple. I wanted to give it a try and I was pleased with the results. As for the jokerish face you're right, on close inspection it's almost clowny, but I was going more for a bloodied jowl effect than for a clown effect. It comes off better when you're viewing the mini with your eyes than with a 5 megapixel camera on macro in unflattering halogen light. Still, I'll try to tone down the effect on my next one. The skin colour on the tabard I personally love. It was so simple to do yet the colour came out so rich and rewarding that I decided to keep it. I used skull white with two washes of gryphonne sepia, two washes of baal red, and one wash of devlan mud, and highlit with a 50/50 mix of tanned flesh and skull white. I think if I'd done another wash of devlan mud it would have toned down the pinkish colour an extra touch and might have pleased you more, but I personally prefer the way I've got it. The armour was neat to do as well. My basecoat was skull white (obviously). I painted over that with adeptus battlegrey, washed that with two coats of badab black, then layered up from a 75/25 mix of adeptus battlegrey/hormagaunt purple all the way up to pure hormagaunt purple. At that point I started doing the skull with 50/50 tentacle pink/ hormagaunt purple to pure tentacle pink, then did my final highlights with a blend of tentacle pink and skull white. For the armour once I'd painted up to hormagaunt purple I then used hormagaunt purple and lich purple in a 75/25 mix and blended up to pure lich purple. The highlights on the armour are scab red. I honestly forget the steps I took on the blue. I think I need to try it again a different way because I'm less satisfied with how it turned out. I think my favourite part of the model is the scab red highlighting on the crozius handle. I think it really stands out. BrianBlessed
Looks great. I like the orange on the parchment myself. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/143691-the-shadow-chapel/page/2/#findComment-1698025 Share on other sites
