Roultox
 Thread based on army formations and how you would use a planets resources to make your ideal force based on 40k vehicles and weaponry to a realistic degree. :P Posting this here instead of AA because renegades/liberated planets from the tyranny of the Imperium pulls away from normal doctrines and formations set by ancient rules and regulations. Not talking codex, neither apocalypse. Example (and my personal thought on how my army should be) below. A limited resource setting I would focus on renewable resources. Underground cities with self sufficient agari-produced food and chemical growth facilities located underground on the inner and lower sections of the subterranian cities for resupply and renewed air. Reasoning, orbital bombardment and limited access, with sensory probes drilled and placed on the outer limits of the cities makes for a prime defense and high civilian morale in terms of protection in war. Drawbacks being obvious, cityfighting on a hive city level being the norm combat doctrine. Expanding is as easy as drilling more tunnels, water being accessible through various locations being moist and collect renewed water supplies. Forces will be supplied with heavy amounts of raw metals for armor, weapons and of course vehicles being a mining colony and subterranian people raised on plant life for minimal disease outbreaks but monitored and limited birth rate, making for fewer soldiers given better equipment. Commissioning a large number of Sentinel vehicles or their equal make depending if the design would change, still fulfilling the same roles however. Weapons and armor would be of a Storm Trooper degree for the basic enhancements and interfaces. Due to the production of self sufficient power, plasma generators will be in heavy supply for plasma weapons, the gasses being a potentially rarer resource everything will be power driven and emission efficient for being in an enclosed city. Filtration already having a heavy payload for the people to live inside as if living in an airless planet colony-station. Given that labs and elevators hold no real limit, the best rooms being expanded more vertical than horizontal means towering constructs can be built and lifted to the surface. Prime conditions to build titans as the main battleforce. I believe in ranged warfare, and the bigger the guns the better for the longest ranges means putting them on big warmachines and walkers being the most efficient of mobile platforms for such weapons because of torso twisting and elevation of the legs for best sight over terrain makes for a powerful weapon of war. Given also that energy weapons are the prime resource of the underground, Turbo Lasers and Plasma style weapons being the primary weapons for the titans. The titan of choice is the scout titan class (warhound size) because speed is required if you wish to have mobility a part of your battle plan. Multiple platforms for the weapons seems best, bigger isnt always better if they have the means to take out a large target in one decisive attack. Spreading the resources makes it harder to take it all out at once. Some may argue that having the same materials put into more tanks and weapons would be better, but I look at it differently. My people are not sacraficial, and any troops I use is for decisive measures and not as a full front force. The more people in the production facilities, means more resources to use and build more vehicles. The more vehicles on the battlefield, means less men on foot and in harms way of weapons that spit toothpicks and kill. (Dark eldar splinter weapons) The idea behind large walkers is that when they are damaged beyond repair, they can be salvaged only by other large walkers with holster-racks where they are hoisted up with cables after dismantling undamaged or repairable parts and brought back to base. Forces without this feature must repair them on site to use them, or drag their heavy parts or worse, cut the one piece heavy parts and lose integrity making it nothing more than scrap metal. Having mobile artillery as a mainstay lifted up from hidden cities under the cover of darkness creates a way of war most small forces cannot handle on an equal scale. The artillery class titans would be battle class (warlord) and because of sheer weight, it is produced in parts and assembled laying against a large hill or mountain. The main weapons would be Quake Cannons. The main fighting force consisting of faster twin gunned Scout titans, the largest titan would hold the largest weapons and the best use for larger weapons is to hit things at long distances. Thus, the 'Artillery' Titan. The force so far: Storm Troopers, Hell-Guns, Plasma Guns Sentinels, Multi-Laser or Lascannon Scout Titan, Plasma Blastguns and/or Turbo Lasers Warlord Titan(Artillery Titan), 2 Quake Cannons, Plasma Blastguns and/or Turbo Lasers (maybe a Apocalypse Missile Launcher or two for artillery means) A walker force assembled underground. Also seemingly in-efficient in the terms of using tanks instead. The force itself based on long range warfare and being mobile while delivering long range payloads. The ultimate weakness is getting inside the cities where titans cannot roam except for the largest districts. Advancement after learning their weaknesses would be towards making their own version of a defiler for a light ranged role, and melee combat denial. Making the shorter ranged battle cannon instead, a smaller version of the Quake Cannon as they expand on the technology. Further expantion would be a limited airforce based on hover-capable aircraft due to the nature of elevator hangars being the primary means of housing aircraft. This airforce will also be capable of dropping paratroopers and para-sentinels (thus Drop Troops Doctrine, if not burrowing underground instead any sooner). As for marine detachments, a laser/plasma core is difficult, so expanding on sonic technology a noise marine force would be the way they would go. If they go chaos, Obliterators will also be a highly sought after unit along with a core defiler force. Posting the concept, the start, and the directions they would go as they advance, remain a liberated force or turning to chaos, either way they maintain a walker/storm trooper style force with the possibility of sonic marines after expanding on the Quake Cannon (and obtaining geneseed tech/traitor marines). So, what sort of force would you have? Rely on turning easily manipulated masses to your will acting like a normal Alpha Leggionaire? Or perhaps bully and loot as you go along, taking babies and raising them to be soldiers? Post your ideas here on how your force would be, and maybe what they might become.
