Gets Hot! plasma weapons and Armour Saves

Ok, this might seem elementary, but I want to make sure I'm reading the Gets Hot! rule correctly, since my friend who's just starting to play and just read the rules for the first time sees it a bit differently. Note that we're not trying to sneak anything by each other - he was discussing his possible army builds and this came up, so I figured I'd check here and try and avoid a problem when we start to play each other!

My interpretation: if you roll a 1, the model takes a wound (bypassing the whole 'roll to wound' Str v T table); then the model gets to take its normal save (armor, inv or whatever), without worrying about the AP value of the fired weapon. My idea is that the Gets Hot! wound is NOT the same thing as being shot by the weapon in question, it's a special effect.

His interpretation: if you roll a 1, the model effectively gets shot by the weapon in question, meaning that first you roll the weapons Str vs the firing models T value; then if the wound occurs, you take the model's saves taking into account the weapons AP value - so for example, a marine in PA (3+) who gets 'wounded' by his plasma gun (AP2) gets no armor save; a Termie (2+/5+) would get its 5+ Invulnerable save. His idea is that the Gets Hot! hit is basically like getting shot by your own gun.

Which of these (or neither?) is correct? Thanks in advance for clearing this up.

Your interpretation is correct, otherwise the marine would die every time.

It is an automatic wound, ie no roll to hit is required or roll to wound, and the marine gets his normal save.

Ok, thanks for that. I wouldn't have questioned it, particularly given the way the rule was worded in 4th ed, but my buddy is not a cheesy/rule-bendy type of guy, so his sincere argument was actually starting to make me think I'd been reading it wrong. Thanks for clearing it up so quickly!

Just for clarifications sake, this is due to the fact that the rule only gives enough information for your interpretation to be correct. There is no evidence to support his point of view (ie: that you get shot with the weapon).

Rule book says under Gets Hot! (edited version)

... overload and singeing their user. .. weapon overheated and injured the model firing it

The weapons glows red-white hot and fries the user unless his oven mitts (armor save) saves him. This it does specify what really is happening.

It doesnt say in his theory - the weapon kicks up and shoots the user in the face! Further more, it does say the model MUST make an Armour Save. If the weapon kicks up and shoots the user in the face, how could there be Armour Saves to be made against AP2? If it was an Invul save to be made, it would surely say INVUL SAVES! yes? I like to think GW isnt THAT dumb wording out their rules.

Just tell your game buddy not to let his imagination run too free and do exactly as the book tells him.

steps to do

1. roll a 1 firing a plasma weapon

2. make an ARMOUR SAVE.

thats it , there is nothing about getting shot in your own face by your plasma gun! That is pure "fan fiction" / "houserule".

Remember, specific rule entries OVER-RIDE all other rules if it specifically says HOW it is to be done like the Get Hot! rule.

Your usual shooting, AP Armor Saves etc etc, do not count if a specific rule entry says otherwise in this case.

I understand he got confused as he made that presumption based on that he was in the shooting phase and use the shooting rules.

Repeat after me -

(1) SPECIFIC RULES ALWAYS!

(2) Then back to the regular rules for that phase.
