Ultramarines 4th Company

Lately i've been playing around with the idea of re-starting my ultramarines army. They were my first 40k army and since i sold them off about a year ago, I've been missing them.

I've played around with a couple of schemes. This is the first scheme I tried out using a darker regal blue instead of an ultramarines blue base:

I found that I really had no idea how to highlight regal blue. It tried diluting it with white but it came out looking really nasty ^_^ I also didn't like the look of the gold shoulder pad trim. 2nd company didn't really do it for me.

Then I saw Gareth's awesome Assault on Black Reach models. [seen here: http://www.thepainteddragon.co.uk/forum/in...hp?topic=1184.0]

I simply fell in love with the scheme and with Gareth's dynamic style of highlighting. Drawing heavily from his work, I decided to try my hand at a test model. It took about 3 or 4 hours and, granted, it doesn't look nearly as nice as Gareth's work. Still, I think that I've found a scheme I can work with:

:) hey good stuff!,i know heaps of peeps hate smurfs but i always love seeing them(maybe cause im a smurf army man myself ;) )

good to see someone doing the 4th Co

* side note - i have found doing the base rim in terracotta makes for a great contrast between base and mini..

Cheers,

Mithril

You can see a huge difference between your first and second miniature - well done. The highlighting on the second model looks a lot sharper and the general colour of the blue looks a lot smoother and crisper than the first figure you painted. One thing that I've found with blue is that it's better to use a lighter shade of blue rather than just adding white as it can lead to a chalky finish. Have a look at my possessed and you'll see what I mean.

The only comment I'd add about the figure is whether the base has been painted - it looks like you've just base coated it, but finishing the base will really complete a great looking mini.

I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your army painted.

hmm thats interesting. i'll have to go buy some terracotta paint and try that out

well in all fairness i spent about 5 times as long on the second model lol i shall take a look at your possessed when i finish typing this post. ooh and yeah, the bases aren't done yet. I will wait until the whole squad is finished before doing them all together. which i suppose means that this should really be in the WIP forum...

Alright guys i finished the second guy in the squad. He took a bit more time because he is showing his face. The face was actually fun to paint though.

and just for fun, here's one of the first heltmetless ultramarines i painted. who says we don't grow as painters right? ;)

Hey like wow! the 2nd guy looks great the bare head is working it ;)

you may want to try and highlight the edge of the green on the pad trims as they seem

a little flat at the moment...and everything else is so well done,it would be a shame to not finish the great job you have done.

i really like the "gareth" check pattern on the greaves ,consider that old idea stolen ;)

anyway good stuff, dont lose momentum and keep em rolling off the production line..

cheers Mithril

You jerk :), starting another marine army when the one I have to paint isn't even finished. No worries though, I have a 2nd on in the works too. Huge marine vs marine battle me thinks.

On a more on topic note, the UMs look great. I like the checkering, though was the helmetless guy supposed to have a checkered kneepad, because there's a start of one but it's unfinished.

Looks good as usual.

Khrangar

Make sure you give me a call, I'm just down the road.

Looking great Titan. Bring those bad boys to the bunker so I can oggle in person.

I prefer the new scheme. It is a true representation of Smurf colours, whereas your first mini looks way too much like a crimson fist marine, very dark blue.

And it looks like your skills have improved alot with your new minis, or are you just taking more time to do each one? Nice work.

I always painted faces like crap and I like by far unhelmeted marines, darn I need to know how you do it.

I don't know if there's necessarily a way i go about it. I start with a dark flesh base (or actually a mix of bronze flesh and scorched brown) and then work up adding more bronze flesh and bleached bone. in the end i do a slight purple glaze on some of the shadowed areas using a very thinned down mix of ultramarines blue and blood red.

Quite a few people have mentioend that actually. I'll have to look into it.

yeah gareth has brought back the "classic" ultramarines with a modern twist.

The sarg has a real gritty look to him and the face and hair is super.

a common misconception, the helmetless guy is actually just a regular trooper with a grenade. the sergeant is coming up soon though so watch this space :)

Dude, how are the green lanterns coming along??? The checkers are done on only half of the kneepad but due to the angle of the pic, it looks like i only did like 1 or 2 checkers =\

But yeah, get those marines painted! I'm up to about 5/6000 fully painted between my blood angels and my templars.

Make sure you give me a call, I'm just down the road.

I've been trying to get Khrangar to come to the bunker, but he lives a lot closer to the new Yonge and Lawrence location so it'll take a bit more convincing. I'll be at the bunker tonight with my templars though and as soon as I get the rest of my blood angels finished (i.e. receive them in the mail), you and I will throw down Full Battle Company style ;)

Titan, I always love your models. I still demand more Templars to this very day.

Thanks Alpha! The templars are almost done though. Only 2 more tanks and 6 terminators before it's complete (right now i'm at about 3200 points, i'll finish at 3500)

haha yeah i took about 5 times as long with the new scheme than i did with the old one.

I'm going to have to up my game...

haha thanks mate! i feel a little wrong about blatantly yoinking a lot of this stuff from you, but i find i learn so much from using your UMs as reference. looking forward to your dread!

Very nice 4th Company marines there titan136, Uriel would be proud ;)

Smurfs done well are still hands down one of the most striking chapters I think. The best thing about doing on of the other companies is that it at leats shows you know your stuff. ;)

Nice work, well done! :)

That is no excuse. Paint more models. Do a full company if you have to. :P I have enough All Hallows Guard for -more- than a full company, I just need a break from black and orange. I think I have enough for eight tactical squads, three assault squads, and two devi squads. I have two predators, three dreads, and a terminator squad.

...I have a little under half painted. D;

  • 2 weeks later...

I've painted 2 more marines. And i'm really doubting my ability to paint an army of these guys. they take so bloody long!

your as good as Gareth!

Heh... maybe he is... maybe he's better... but then I didn't have anyone to copy did I ;-) but at only a handful of models in a few weeks, he's not nearly prolific enough... I'll have my company finished by the time he has his first squad done... I've painted 45 space marine models in a month. Come on Titan, you can do it, don't give up now.

You should come talk to me on msn, maybe we can spur each other on Titan.
