Antman677
Hi all, I was wondering what is the best thing to use to make studs on pre-heresy and heresy era armor? i tried GS but it was hard to make all the studs the same size...any tips/hints? thanks! XKhalilX
Antman, what you could do was roll out a small piece of greenstuff, and find something that is the right diameter for studs that is hollow and punch them out like a cookie cutter does. or u can use a hobby drill to hollow something out and then again use it as a pattern and punch the studs out. another thing to do is roll out a thin strand of GS, make it as same in diameter as possible and "slice" off studs at the end like ur cutting a a carrot. another possibility is find a plastic rod, maybe a part of sprue or a banner pole or axe or spear shaft and again do the slicing again. just some ideas to throw your way, hope they help :) I too want to do some studded shoulder plates, they look savage :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/144445-studs-on-armor/#findComment-1674016 Share on other sites

BrianBlessed
One really good idea I heard from Brother Nihm in another thread was to use little blobs of superglue. Swordlord
Go to the local 'Big Store' (like Wal-mart, etc) and buy some dome-headed pins from the crafts department, like they use in tailoring. They are the right size for studs, and with a handy pair of wire cutters, you remove the amount of pin you don't need. Drill holes in the armor where you need the studs, and super-glue them in place. You can even leave them unpainted, if you want that bright, shiny effect. CAUTION! Use eye protection. Those pins are steel and sharp, and will go flying when you snip them! Brother Nihm
An alternative way is plastic rod, the non-hollow variety. You can even take a file to it and round them off like proper Marine studs. StormDragon
Grandt line rivets make good studs. You should be able to get them from model train shops, or just google them to find some online retailers. Matador
I've found that taking a pin vise to a soulder pad then pushing the GS through like play-dough works pretty good too. Antman677
thanks for all the great suggestions! what i ended up doing was flattening out some GS, taking some styrene tubes and pressed into the GS...not all the way through so the stud was still attached to the GS slab... http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii57/antman677/40k/studs.jpg then i cut out off the studs from the GS...how do they look? http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii57/antman677/40k/ravion_front_v20.jpg i might go grab some of those grandt rivets...dont feel like dealing with projectile needles :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/144445-studs-on-armor/#findComment-1675376 Share on other sites

Good way to avoid flying sharp pieces is to stick the pin into a small block of foamboard, lump of unmixed GS, or something like that. Then, you hold the pin, and snap away, no shrapnel flying around :). Byrne
Another thing you can do is use a pen, with the ball point withdrawn and press it down on a piece of flatten out greenstuff... there is your studs.
