Imperial Fists army blog

Hey everyone.

I thought it was time to start a painting blog, as it might get me motivated to do some more painting. Being a conversion nut, I have quite a few projects going so I thought I'd post them all here.

Imperial Fists Second Company

I love the Imperial Fists. They are fluffwise the coolest Chapter in the Imperium and their striking colour scheme is almost completely unique. It is also VERY challenging, so being me, I had to make an army.

I'm going for Second Company (yellow shoulder trims), and so far I've started the Command Squad and Captain. The Veteran Sergeant and Company Champion are almost done, and you might have seen them before, but I thought I'd throw them all into the same thread.

Here are some WIP shots:

I also have made a Lysander conversion, as I think the pose of the GW mini is boring as hell. Here he is so far:

Will be updated soon!

What do you think?

Thats some great conversion work. One thing I have noticed though is some of the later highlights to white look a little strong. Perhaps a glaze to blend the highlights would be necessary to make the transition smoother.

hope this is of some help to you.

  • 1 month later...

Update! Here are a few pics of my Captain so far. I hope to enter him in a local contest at the end of the month.

The pics make him look a bit brighter than he really is and I need to fix some highlights... I'd say he's about 70% done.

Thoughts? :)

No comments due to everyone being speechless.

Nice use of bits, nice execution. Beautiful yellow, appropriate level of bling and refreshing pose. Neat freehand on the cape is very cool. I like the backpack, nice to see I'm not the only guy that thought "Hey those 2nd ed hands look to be the right size....hmmm nice and stylised....hmmm...Backpack!".

My only suggestion might be to bling up the helmet a bit (got any little brass etch aquilas?).

Thanks for the comments guys! ^_^

@AlexCrute: I'm afraid I don't have any brass etch eagles but that might be an idea.

@mithrilforge: No those Imperial Fists symbols are painted on. I never use decals. :D The Captain is a conversion using the Hellbrecht mini with a new head and new arms (and a few other new bits).

What? That chapter symbol is freehanded? Well go and paint the Mona Lisa on his cape then!

(Heh heh, that'll show him, him and his fancy freehanding m@dsk1llz)

Ahem.... on a more serious note, you're kinda limited in colour choice and placement for any further freehanding on the back.

A big central single design will be hidden by the backpack, and anything yellow will be obscured by it.

My recommendations would be:

1: Two smallish corner-pieces - either stylised designs (winged fists or something) or perhaps two halves of a scene (Imperial Fist marines one side, diabolical baddies on the other, ranked up a la GW artwork).

2: Text from the Codex Astartes, similar to that found in the Daemonhunters codex. In muted orange capitals, black underlined.

3: A ruined cityscape silhouette, ablaze, with flames blending into the red of the cape. Because Imperial Fists = smashers of buildings.

4: Crossed swords - or even better a bolter crossing a chainsword :)
