Games Day Mini coverted to Black Widows Female Warlord

Recommended Posts

Okay, those of us who went to Games Day got a limited edition marine commander holding a thunder hammer with both hands. I was ready to just give mine away, until someone challenged me to use it to make a Black Widow HQ model. Since there were copies of the new space marine codex for us to peruse through, I quickly settled on the best special character for me to use when I transition the Widows over to using the new marine codex. Vulkan He'stan. Wait, you say all my free flamers and multi-meltas will count as twin liked? Why, yes, please, and may I have some more?

Anyway, he has a lot of weapons to mimick, so I went diving through my bitz drawers. The Relic Blade was easily enough represented by a Grey Knight Nemisis Force Weapon, and what better to represent a 3+ invulnerable save then a big 'ol storm shield? Since her hands are already filled, I mounted the heavy flamer over her shoulder, Ad-Mech style, with a converted devastator backpack to hold the promethium. I also gave her a leftover banner from a commander box set, which will give some room for some nice freehand.

Anyway, enjoy the pics. She's primed and ready to be painted at this point. As always, click on the thumbnail to see a larger pic.

when you went to gamesday you "got" it?

did you get it at the door for having a ticket, or did you have to purchase it?

i remember yrs ago, when i went, they'd give you a free mini with the stub off your ticket.

then i went this yr and they're making you pay for it? :cuss... needless to say, i didnt purchase it

"They gave it to us for free at the door"

Seriously?! we gotta pay for it here in the UK, this time its a compulsary part of the ticket price! (£30 rather than £25). I like the model, but don't think people should 'have' to buy it, especially if they are non-marine. If you guys get it for free, thats really not on :<

Anyway, to the model, great looking, not a fan of female marines per se (they just don't/can't exist as you know) but you've created a very cool looking model.

Anyway, to the model, great looking

Thanks. :)

not a fan of female marines per se (they just don't/can't exist as you know)

As I know? :D

I think they can exist in 40K, but that discussion is beyond the scope of this thread, so I'll just say I respectfully disagree with your Fannon and leave it at that. ;)

1) Start with regular marine legs and the back half of the torso.

2) Create a cylinder of green stuff that will form the waist, but bring it all the way up to the neck

3) Wrap a long sausage around the chest of the torso, use your sculpting tool to cleft the clevage, then shape it smooth with wet tools or fingers. Once it is set, use your exacto knife to trim the bottom edge so that it is nice and angular

4) Create the abdomen plates one layer at a time. Allow each plate to set completely, then use an exacto knife to cut it to sharp angles.

5) Use a little sausage to make the front half of the neck collar. Once it is set, trim it flat on top with your exacto knife.

6) Shave a jewel off of an eldar fig and place it in the center of the chest.

7) Use your exacto to trim down the back of the marine torso so that it is flush with the sides of the new waist.

Hope that helps.

As much as I like your work, Thunder, I've got a bit of a gripe about your depiction of female marines. Power armor is supposed to be something like inches thick, completely surrounding torso; terminator armor even more so. If that's the case, why oh why did you have to model all of your Black Widows with utterly massive sculpted boobs?

It seems that there could be so many different ways to convey that the marines in the suit are female; a reduced head profile, Sabbat-pattern helmets like the Sisters of Battle, a slimmer body and arms, or even just a female head-swap. Ridiculously huge boobs is probably the worst way to convey femininity; it it's really more reminiscent of Bob from Fight Club than it is of a female amazon type warrior.

Please don't take this as negative criticism; I have a lot of respect for your work and I think a lot of it is topnotch. I'm just wondering about your particular interpretation of female marines, and why you chose to model them in that particular way.
