Creating a monster

Greetings lads!

Something of a GW related shock a month or so ago's seen me all but forget the hobby recently, as I've not been able to find motivation. Fortunately I'm getting back into it with a big project I meant to get rolling at the start of summer, as making something big always fills me with joy.

My orks have plenty by the way of apocalypse might; kults of speed, a stompa, dread mob, fighta bomma, battle fortress, gargant... but my space marines are only just enough of a force to even use in apocalypse. As well as bulking them up to a full company (which'll be made quite a bit easier by the marines coming in Black Reach) for future games, I wanted them to have something...big. Something with a punch, something that can scare the pants off my opponents and at the same time get onlookers wondering how I got the thing. This seemed the perfect opportunity to make an often forgotten war machine, the leviathan.

For those of you that don't know what one is, here's a picture from the computer game Final Liberation;

Now the leviathan in that picture's a bit too big; the old epic mini for it was the same size (from above) as a baneblade. However this picture was the first introduction I had to the beast, and so I wanted mine to be larger than a weedy guard tank. The leviathan's meant to be a mobile fortress, an imperial force's command bunker which can redeploy anywhere on the planet and even take part in large engagements. I decided on a leviathan shaped superheavy, halfway in size between a leviathan and a Capitol Imperialis (which is about the size of the leviathan in that picture.

I started off with a baneblade kit, and the first step was to lengthen the tracks. This sounds easy, but really really isn't. Pictures should be self explanatory;

I'm currently looking forward to; scratch building 6 twin linked lascanon turrets, doing the huge back doors, creating the massive front gun (which, apparently, can be used to engage ships in low orbit!) and the look on opponents' faces when I use this thing. Comments are very welcome!

DiStudios; Yes, I'd love pictures thanks!

wiplash; GW is reliably unreliable when it comes to the scale of 40k vehicles, especially superheavies. If I used the epic model as a guide it would have the same footprint as a baneblade, but to me this wasn't big enough for what it represented.

Molotov; Leviathan's aren't nearly as big as ordinatus engines, but it might be slightly taller. Thanks for the link, that's an incredible model!

Progress! The other track's done... sadly it looks much like the other so probably isn't very exciting for you lot. The thing for me to do now is decide just how big I want the body of it to be; there's tidying up required where the track sides were trimmed and joined, but I'll leave those until later. It's gonna be big!

Hi guys

I'm resurrecting this thread, as I've decided to really get this project going. Here's a side elevation of what I've got planned; I've changed the proportions a bit, since I thought it was waaay too tall.

Dont give up on this project this is somthing to be proud of if accoplished, you have my eyes.

And my bow!

And my axe!

Looking good. ^_^

Ah.. We've meemed the B&C. And it was good. Also, after looking at that last link, I'm going to make something huge that I've been planning for a long time. Your all going to like it, and my bankbook is going to commit suicide to escape what I'm going to do with it.

Project race? :)

BAH, you should use a Baneblade Chasis for EACH FOOT and make it BIG. ;)

I've got a 30" tall gargant sitting in a box somewhere, I don't need any more massive things. At least with this my marines won't have zero superheavy support, my ork army rather outmatches my 'manders.

Triple post? This thread's going down like the titanic! Maybe it'll get some more interest now that there's real progress. Only the frame at the front is actually glued together, so please don't bother telling me that the tracks are wonky. My cutting mat's a bit lumpy :D It's made from 3mm plasticard, which would be a nightmare to work with if I hadn't been able to make all the templates in AutoCAD and have them laser cut :lol:

I've made a concave frame, to allow me to press plasticard down onto the convex frame while the glue for it dries. This should give me a lovely even curve;
