Bizarre AdMech force idea

Several years ago, I got the brilliant idea to do an admech force. Hunted down codex, didn't care if it wasn't tourney legal since most of my FLGS would have loved to see a different type of force on the board. Anyway, for some reason I have never been able to pin down, my vision of the Ad Mech had basic infantry that were more analogous to Marines than Guardsmen. I was looking to build a force based off of a CSM codex (Iron within, Iron... aw crap), but everyone was telling me I was wrong. Skitarii were more akin to guardsmen than to marines. Unfortunately, the gods of ebay had delivered unto me quite the collection of (epic scale) knights (damn near every flavor), warlords, and even a few warhounds. I had envisioned using the knights as troops and the warlords as cataphractii. The warhounds were "gravy". Anyway, I'm not sure where to go with this project now. I'd love another 40k army, I'd LOVE an admech army using these figures. However, I'm not sure what to use, or what to call the darn things. I simply am NOT in love with the idea of using the IG codex since I am not going to the trouble of building an army strictly to lose all the time.

What to do?

'Kay, first, I don't know where you play, but my guard don't lose all the time. Just a little more than they win.

Second, 'Dex: Guard is rumoured for release shortly after christmas, if you've held out this long, another few months shouldn't break you.

You might try the Eldar list in the mean time. The Mechanicus has reserves of Grav Technologies, and the knights varients could proxy aspect warriors and be fluffed up as highly specialised servators lead by tech priests with elite gear using the exarch rules. I'd use an Autarch for a general, but you could fluff up some kind of robo-comand throne in lieu of an Avatar.

You mak a point. Guard certainly don't lose ALL the time. However, the type of list most people seem to advocate for using the IG as an AdMech list is usually a 3 year subscription to SUCK magazine. Carapace armour, Cybernetics? Very fluffy and flavorful and even appropriate, however I'm not gonna build an admech list and not get blood for the machine god.

I think that the Eldar list idea is damn near a stroke of genius. I've heard suggestions for CSM, CCSM, CIG, but never CE. I was looking through it yesterday after reading the ray of sunshine that is your post, and decided that I might just do that. It's either that, or instead of a floater theme I will use the CCSM list and make a oblit list.

Last time I tried the 'More Plasma than God' static infantry approach to Guard they died in droves to an Iron Warrior Gun Line, it was like a one way fair to lose street. Drop Troopers faired little better. I've had some limited sucess with a heavily mechanised assault list, but I'm going to try a more pedestrian based list again in this edition. Maybe I can find sucess with a 'More bodies than you have bullets' type list.

OK, I need to clarify something. I don't think Guard suck. I play Guard some, it's a secondary army for me. However, most of the AdMech lists I see that are written from the Guard 'dex have you taking some upgrades and options that I think are going to waste a lot of points for you. Guard are a great force, and let me tell you that the first time I field them in 5ed against a horde I am truly going to enjoy whipping out my 15 mortars. Or a selection from my collection of 14 tanks. Truth be told, I really enjoyed taking them to a tourney a few years back, and facing Khorne. I got first turn, and by the bottom of second it was done. Poor kid never had a chance on diagonal deployments on an 8' board (i know, i know). I've also played some great games losing with the guard.

OK, has anyone used the new Chaos space marine dex for an ad mech list? I've got enough Knights for about 70 CSM, and 14 warlord titans that would make great Oblits, at least 9 of them will. I also have the original defiler model. Anyone remember that? It was a bitzed-up kit that GW was selling after the last C:CSM came out, and before they had put out the defiler kit. Looks really Ad Mech IMNSHO, maybe make a good Lash Prince or something.

I've been looking at a list that would be playable at 1500-2000 points. I'm thinking tri-oblit with the warlords, and am stuck with my CSM. Maybe Noise marines for the shooty, maybe Plague marines to make my opponents try and force me off an objective (good luck, sucker!), maybe standard CSM for the heavy weapons and better weight of numbers to run forward and take objectives. I dunno, any suggestions? I'm liking the noise marine option, but I dunno if the points cost is worth their shooty. Anyone try running anything like that? Does it work?
