Mr_Monstro
Hey brothers, With the new dex ahead i decided to give the DIY chapter idea, floating around in my head, a try. Here is what I've painted so far (not a lot ^_^ ) Now it would be nice if you'd give me some feedback on the scheme and the quality (actually i don't paint a lot and these are the first marines for quite a while) http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/2/squat1co6.jpg http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/3033/detail2gi6.jpg http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/6620/detail1am7.jpg (sorry for the pic size ... no idea what i did there) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145016-first-marines-of-my-new-diy/ Share on other sites
n00byfied
Finally he did it! ;-) Kudos for the clean painting, though the red needs some improvement IMO. Chronowraith
Hard to see much detail. I can't even really tell what color the main body is supposed to be (looks brass to me, is that right?). Are the heads black? So until you post better pics I'll say a few things that stand out... 1) The eyes are very well done.. kudos. 2) The red on the bolters looks inconsistant like you didn't get a nice solid basecoat of red on there. 3) This one could just be the photos, so pardon me if I'm wrong. Anyway, I know the main color is metallic, but you should still highlight it. If I'm right about the Brass color then add some mithril silver in there (or the shinier gold) and put some highlights on the more exposed joints. 4) Overall, from what I can tell in the photos, the color scheme seems to work pretty well. I think the shoulder trim needs to stand out more than it does though. Although with the colors you've chosen (Black, Brass, and Red if I'm right), I'm not sure how. Maybe reversing the colors on the shoulder pad? Red trim with brass pad? Just some random thoughts. Rekky
Looking good, very dark tho, i'd try brightening the red up a little, maybe go for a brighter shard?! Also as Chronowraith said, highlight ur brass by mixing in some silver or gold and blend it up. Have you decided on a chapter badge? Look forward to seeing more :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145016-first-marines-of-my-new-diy/#findComment-1680810 Share on other sites
Mr_Monstro
Thanks for the replies, My color of choice was tin biz - and the helmets are black, i wanted to give them kind of a sinister look. For the red parts - Actually i did highlight the edges - probably not strong enough  , I'll give it another try + some new pics in time. The idea with the shoulder pads could work - but firs of all i want to see how the red turns out with the chapter and squat marks on it ( I hope, a little less flat) So long, Monstro Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145016-first-marines-of-my-new-diy/#findComment-1681662 Share on other sites
Mr_Monstro
Well ... first update, I tried a little freehand chapter badge thing - it's not finished yet but it'll give an impression of things to come. As for my DIY chapter, being successors of Dorns glorious imperial fist i went for a hammer with the badge (just in case you can't identify it  ) The laurels are only decoration right now. http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/349/badge3qh5.jpg http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/1336/badge2gf2.jpg I still need to add some sharpness to it, and an eyecatcher i guess. Cheers, Monstro Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145016-first-marines-of-my-new-diy/#findComment-1682362 Share on other sites
Chronowraith
The blown up pic allows a little more detail to be seen. Do you have any other angles other than the side? The colors work pretty good overall. You did a good job on the chapter badge (and it's actually interesting as opposed to some of the symbols out there). I think the main thing I see here is you still need to highlight the tin bitz. Mix some tin bitz with mithril silver and do a fine highlight along the raised joints and edges. I think those would really make the figure look nice. MalevolentMc
Great handwork on that Chapter badge! Aside from red being a tad flat, the colors work surprisingly well for these guys. Keep it up! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145016-first-marines-of-my-new-diy/#findComment-1682707 Share on other sites
Rekky
That chapter badge very looks good, but what is it with imperial fists at the moment? Mr_Monstro
Hey Guys, thanks for your replies, This is the second update - i tried to follow the suggestions concerning the red and the tin biz ...i was quite satisfied with the result, but now - looking at the pics, i'm not so sure if it worked out well  Maybe i was too careful or maybe i just can't take pics -_- http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/4899/feddisch1qg7.jpg http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/8158/feddisch2cm3.jpg http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/9633/feddischdetailsq9.jpg As for the hammer icon and the fist connection - i'm planning to get into the fluff a little bit later - in the DIY subforum. So long mates Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145016-first-marines-of-my-new-diy/#findComment-1683542 Share on other sites
Julio
They're sexy. My only gripe is the one holding a pistol and assault rifle. It seems to me he'd waste a lot of ammo. Mr_Monstro
Hey guys, finally an update and some new pics to share, I decided to go for the dreadnought, the box was lying around to tempting. Here are the first pics, still wip ouf course http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/1876/dreadtorsofront3ma0.jpg http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/6386/dreadtorsoback2va8.jpg http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/3769/dreadlaserside1xh7.jpg http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/2383/dreadlaserschrg2yk0.jpg http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/192/dreadlaserfront2dn0.jpg http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/8793/dreadccschrg1wr5.jpg http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/7487/dreadccfront2ig6.jpg I'm not so sure about his cc arm - on the pics the white highlights look a little harsh, looking at it live, it seems quite ok The Dreads lower section is also finished but there is not a lot to show you - just lot of "tin bizzed" metal ^^ Well, that's all so far, cheers Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145016-first-marines-of-my-new-diy/#findComment-1709806 Share on other sites
