Captin Xavier
Hey guys and gals. Cpt X here with a little insight into what i actually do around here but unfortuately for you guys there is a large section of back story that accpomanies this mini. !!! THOSE NOT INTERESTED SCROLL DOWN NOW !!! The Story So, About three months ago it was one of my friends birthday. And seeing as he was starting up a space marine army i told him that i would make him an HQ character so he could play almost straight away (seeing as he was getting the battle force for his birthday). So he came back to me with an idea, which just happened to be the easiest to kitbash And away i went, scouring throught forums, websites and magazines for inspiration. The model he had set me to do was a librarian, but it had a little bit of a twist to it, he wanted it to look as if he was using a psycic power of some sort. Then i came across a VERY useful article on the uk games workshop website. It was all about converted command squads. So i had a quick look through and i found one model that was an all PLASTIC librarian. In the very same article i found some inspiration for the psycic power too. So i set about creating the 'monstrosity'. It was a very basic design meaning there would be almost no GS-fu needed, except for filling a few gaps and a little creativity which i will show you it later on, and all the parts are plastic so they are easy to tinker with. After putting the librarian together i showed it to my friend and he was over the moon, so he then requested that i also painted it for him as well. Being such a nice person i did, a fairly basic colour scheme with a little of (in my opinion rubbish) free hand for the chapter sign. I then showed it to him again and was speechless. He then said that the base looked a little plain with just him on it, so i suggested that i should create a little familiar to go on the base with him. With the limated space that was left on the base i use my 'inteligence' and decided to make a little servo skull for him. Built it, painted it and added it to the base all in a weekend. Then the following day was his birthday, so instead of buying a presant i gave him the figure. Im pleased to say it is now the ONLY HQ choice he has in his 1500 pt army. He also has a little cabinet to put it in after he's finished playing so it doesent get dusty I will get pics up of it as soon as i can. Rant over, now onto the piccys with a little explanation. http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e136/Toad860/Kit-bash%20librarian/psy_power_wip.jpg This is my representation of a general psycic power. Its a skull taken from one of the chains on the chaos tank sprew. I straightened out a basic bolter holding arm by pinning it and then filling up the gaps with GS. ( with my frineds model i use the missle supposrt arm, they both work just as well.) I then pinned the skull to the hand waited for that to dry and then GSed in between the hand and skull, this was done by gettin a 'triangular' shaped piece of GS and wrapping it around the pin. Once that is done grab your sculpting tool and drag it down the length of the GS at an angle, to get the flame affect change the direction of the drag a few times so it crosses over existing lines. Let this all dry and you have one hand firing a psycic power. http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e136/Toad860/Kit-bash%20librarian/power_weapon_wip.jpg This is just your bog standard power axe. I had a little trouble with it as to begin with it was a left handed weapon and i already had the psycic power on that side. So I grabbed a terminator thunder hammer arm, cut the hand and the thunder hammer off and added the power axe. Fairly easy no GS-fu required for this bit. I also added the parchment for that unique feeling. http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e136/Toad860/Kit-bash%20librarian/Body_wip.jpg This is the body of this years Games Day, I was intending on using it as a captain along with my AoBR when i get it. But i ran out of inspiration while painting and gave up :( but then my idea hit and i deiced to use it as the body for my new librarian. Nothing major done here, just removed the arm 'pips' for the placement of the arms, cut off the bottom bit which attaches the mini to the base (does this part actually have a name?) and inserted a pin into his foot as to make basing him easier in the long run. http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e136/Toad860/Kit-bash%20librarian/head_wip.jpg Right, a basic head just with the tubes on the side of his face cut away to give it a little bit of uniqueness once again. http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e136/Toad860/Kit-bash%20librarian/Base_wip.jpg Now on to the base, which personally i think is very nice . This was just a standard 40mm base, i then cut a circle from thin plastic card the same diameter as the top of the base (the bit where the actual mini is attached). I then drew out a basic 'tiled' road effect and cut it out. While sticking the squares on i thought 'Hmm.... lets make this a little more interesting, lets put a nice small-ish crator on here. just to add a little more uniqueness to the model.' For this i decided which of the 'tiles where going to be blow to piece and didn't stick it down. I stuck the rest on around it making sure not to stick this one down too. I then grabbed the 'tile and cut it up into about 6 or 7 pieces. To create that muddy crator look i make up a btch of GS and formed a ring the general size of the 'tile' i removed. I then proceeded to drag out the GS so it looked like mud, i then did the same to the inside of the ring trying to make it as different as possible. Then i took the piece of the shattered 'tile' and place a couple in the actual GS and the rest in ramdom positions over the base. Finally i added gravel and a rock that were made from hardened GS. Here are some shots of him just Blu-tacked together so you can see him together Front http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e136/Toad860/Kit-bash%20librarian/front_wip.jpg Left side http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e136/Toad860/Kit-bash%20librarian/side_2_wip.jpg Right side with servo skul http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e136/Toad860/Kit-bash%20librarian/side_wip.jpg C&C is always welcome Cheers Cpt X EDIT: sorry guys had a lil problem with the internet, i promise this is complete Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145027-kit-bashed-librarian/ Share on other sites
Chronowraith
Good job, he looks really good considering he is essentially all standard parts that anyone could kit bash together. I like the pose quite a bit and I really wish people wouldn't be so scared of GS. Doing simple stuff like soft armor to reposition arms/legs and effects like the skull you have aren't that complex. Just takes a little creativity and thought! The body doesn't look plastic (largely because of the holster being on there) I'm curious what model that came from. EDIT: Nevermind... you edited your post and answered that last question of mine. :P Thanks a lot! Rekky
Looks cool, like the skull effect :) can't wait to see it painted up. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145027-kit-bashed-librarian/#findComment-1680815 Share on other sites
ilnar
the psycic arm is too long... awsome tho,,, Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145027-kit-bashed-librarian/#findComment-1680866 Share on other sites
ShinyRhino
Looks nice. Are youplanning to add any wires into his helmet to represent a physchic hood? Also, I'd consider another parchment/tabard thing on his shoulder. The one you have wouldn't be able to stand that way with his arm pointing in that direction. It'd fall downward, toward the ground. Captin Xavier
Thanks for the replys so far guys  Chronowraith: Thanks, that was sort of the idea. I didnt want to go to all the trouble of making it difficult when modified stock parts would do the trick. Rekky: Thanks, im going to start painting to night, but i have the new term starting tomorrow so i will only have a little time in the evening to work on him now :) ilnar: Actually the arm is the same length as it would normally be, i just repositioned it and filled in the gaps :) . But thanks for the concern, its nice to see people helping. ShinyRhino: If im going to be honest i dont really want to add anything more to the mini as it would just complicate things further. Also, i thought of GSing another one, but just to make things easier for me and the fact he's in a running position made me think it would sorta flow that diection any way. ;) Thanks for the relpys guys, i have primed him and im just about to put the base coat on now. Maligoare
Very nice, I like the skull/psychic power especially. I am doing something similar for making a chaplain at the moment, and I have already made a plastic techmarine for a friend. It's amazing what you can do with the plastic bits!
