Lamenter
Hey all, (I got a thread about this on Warseer too, but this is THE Power Armour forum afterall :D ) I've been fascinated with the idea of truescale space marines for a number of years now, and with a number of people providing tutorials (thanks Doghouse, amongst others) I figured it was time to give it a go myself, and if successful try an army of them. Here's my first test model (with size comparison). http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y291/lamenter76/Black%20Dragons/Dragon-test.jpg And with a bit more work done to him. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y291/lamenter76/Black%20Dragons/IMG_1274.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y291/lamenter76/Black%20Dragons/IMG_1276.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y291/lamenter76/Black%20Dragons/IMG_1277.jpg I should also mention that he is based on a 30mm round base ( http://stores.ebay.co.uk/MISC-Miniatures ) and they are a perfect fit. I also got hold of some clay shaper tools as suggested by DeathCat147 and they have been an enormous help. Well worth the money I would say. I'm considering making the army Blood Angels. However, for me the whole Army of Death thing never really appealed, and so I'm planning on doing them in the flavour they had back in first edition - a normal but highly regarded Space Marine chapter rather than an assault based army. They do after all follow normal codex chapter structure, and I'll probably disregard death company for the time being (always bugged me how they fight in EVERY Blood Angels battle). In addition I get to convert my own truescale Captain Tycho, my favourite GW character to lead them into battle (apparently Digi-lasers make a return in the new Codex, yay!). More to come... IndyMal
Let me be the first to say: AWESOME! Great sculpting and attention to detail, I especially like his belt kit on the back, my only suggestion is to add more around the front! Maybe a scanner? As a BA fan I can't wait to see this painted up in red. Are you going for a true blood red or a darker shade? The Defiler
OMG ! Hugest backpack ever !!! :P ;) Smooth GS work. Impressive marine, really. Shoulder trims are a bit too wide (and not thick enough) to my taste though... but it's no big problem.. I really believe it's time for you to start a whole army... And now, you've only got to paint him (and maybe them) as well as his 'little' Lamenter brother !! ^_^ the def ... slah
1 itty-bitty-teeny thing that bothers me on an otherwise impressive model: The fanny-pack seems misplaced - I can´t believe he´ll be able to put something in or take something up of those small pouches while they are strapped to his back and he´s in powerarmour - it seems physically impossible. I know it´s nitpicking, but switch the placement of the helmet/grenades/pouches so that the pouches at least hang on one of the sides for realistic access (truescale is all about realism right? :)) Otherwise really nice size on that guy! Pulse
Haha fanny pack, you yanks make me laugh! :) Loving the model matey, looks awesome. Love that you have made the back pack that slightly bit wider, you have some great GS talent! I agree with slah though maybe the pouches could be moved to his side or something rather than his lower back. Other than that, i love it! Chronowraith
I was just telling my friends this past weekend that I've never seen a truescale attempt that looked good and I doubt it could be done properly. Lamenter
Thanks guys for the comments, certainly helps to keep motivation for an army to these. This'll be a long post, but I want to reply to everyone's comments so far. As a BA fan I can't wait to see this painted up in red. Are you going for a true blood red or a darker shade? I'm gonna go for a solid deep red. Very minimal highlights, lots of glazes of red ink. Probably work up from a black undercoat. Shoulder trims are a bit too wide (and not thick enough) to my taste though... but it's no big problem... My excuse for the trims are: a) that's the minimum with I can make them on the terminator pads without have to reduce their size (and we can't be having that!). B) I struggle to manipulate plasticard, so I used thinner stuff than I would prefer to make it fit bit. Otherwise I agree, but I'm comfortable with keeping them as they are. Just added this to my favourites as one to try :> bloody awesome work! thats the first 'true scale' marine I've seen, that isn't just a 'tall' space marine, yes please paint it classic (secod ed) blood angel colours! it will look awesome indeed!! Thanks. I'm gonna try and base the entire army on the first GW studio Blood Angels army, anyone remember them? (back in WD139 and 141) So. Yes they will indeed be classic, though without so much orange highlights. Brilliant! i am especially envious of your cloak sculpting skills! As said above, cant wait to see this guy in red!S.O.N. I can't recommend clay shapers highly enough. Silicone tipped sculpting tools, about £5 ($10) a piece. They really are perfect for this kind of thing. Nice Fist BTW. Impressive work. He is gorgeous! ^-^ I'm mid-way through a TS attempt myself, I think you've carried it off brilliantly Thanks. I've been following your work. You're one of the guys who led me to decide to finally start this project. The fanny-pack seems misplaced - I can´t believe he´ll be able to put something in or take something up of those small pouches while they are strapped to his back and he´s in powerarmour - it seems physically impossible. I know it´s nitpicking, but switch the placement of the helmet/grenades/pouches so that the pouches at least hang on one of the sides for realistic access (truescale is all about realism right? ;)) Yeah, but it covers the gaping hole in his back quite nicely ;) I won't change it on this mini, but will consider "realistic access" in future for my other guys. :) Loving the model matey, looks awesome. Love that you have made the back pack that slightly bit wider, you have some great GS talent! I agree with slah though maybe the pouches could be moved to his side or something rather than his lower back. Thanks. I'm surprised the backpack thing hasn't been done before. It's one of my favourite details. Best true-scale I've ever seen. Bar none. No complaints. Now production-line it. Wow! Er... ok boss. :D I was just telling my friends this past weekend that I've never seen a truescale attempt that looked good and I doubt it could be done properly. Thanks for proving me wrong! Very well done. Glad to help. Looks fantastic mate! Really nice work, especially on the robes. :P Thanks Doghouse. I wouldn't have attempted this if I hadn't seen your *cough* unfinished *cough* Actual Scale tutorial. Can't wait to see what this secret work is. Good true scale and all but Id like more pictures of your Lamenters. They look amazing from what I see. Keep up the good work! I'd love to oblige, but that's the only Lamenters mini I finished or didn't recycle. I planned to do an army years ago (when I joined this forum in fact) but just never quite got round to it. I thought about making this truescale army a Lamenters chapter, but I think the time has come to work on the Blood Angels army I always wanted. Lamenter
Small update. So here's my first Tactical marine in progress and 3 others in various stages of green stuff work. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y291/lamenter76/Blood%20Angels/IMG_1278.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y291/lamenter76/Blood%20Angels/IMG_1280.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y291/lamenter76/Blood%20Angels/IMG_1281.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y291/lamenter76/Blood%20Angels/IMG_1279.jpg I decided quite early on that the green stuff work needs to be done in many small stages as I have the rather annoying habit of putting my finger on a finished part before it's hardened. Also, because of the nature of the project and style of the Blood Angels themselves I've figured I need to (for the most part) work on one figure at a time. If not I tend to rush, and these figures need time and attention lavished on each and every one. In other words this is going to take a while ^_^ Moving on. The chest plate on marine number 2, is just a standard power armour chest. The belt and midsection have obviously been removed. I bulked it out by sandwiching green stuff between the front and back pieces but at first it didn't look big enough. I was fairly certain width wasn't the issue, as I'd widened the original test model and ended up trimming it back to his original width to make it look right. So I then went on to sculpt an extension to the bottom of the chest plate. I think this works fairly well. I was really not keen to be sculpting chest eagles on every model and so far this looks to be a mighty fine compromise. I'll have to see how it goes however. I've also decided to go with transfers for the shoulder pads as I've found a good place to buy them and think I should give em a go after all these years of avoiding them. Joiji
I have the same problem with gstuffing myself. That aside, love the models, and the concept, although I'd like to see how those shoulder pads work out, as I have a feeling you could improve upon them quite easily. Otherwise good work :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145075-more-truescale-madness/#findComment-1684821 Share on other sites
Lamenter
More in progress pics of the second mini. I'm not entirely happy with the midsection, but as it won't be visible because of the position of the bolter I'm not gonna stress over it. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y291/lamenter76/Blood%20Angels/IMG_1282.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y291/lamenter76/Blood%20Angels/IMG_1284.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y291/lamenter76/Blood%20Angels/IMG_1285.jpg I want all these models to be strictly WYSIWYG and so added a bolt pistol as the marine's second weapon. However, something that has always bugged me is the small size of holstered bolt pistols, and so to remedy this I took a standard bolt pistol and sculpted a holster for it based on this style holster. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y291/lamenter76/Blood%20Angels/IMG_1286.jpg And now the finished model, except his hand. I was going to use to standard gripping hand from the power armour sprue, but it just looks too small. So instead I'll sculpt it myself. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y291/lamenter76/Blood%20Angels/IMG_1289.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y291/lamenter76/Blood%20Angels/IMG_1290.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y291/lamenter76/Blood%20Angels/IMG_1291.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y291/lamenter76/Blood%20Angels/IMG_1293.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145075-more-truescale-madness/#findComment-1685411 Share on other sites

FerrumIgnatus
Doghouse got to be proud, as his padawan surely excels in the art of truescaling. On a side note; Lamenter, have you considered using the "Movie Marine" army list for these guys? Lamenter
On a side note; Lamenter, have you considered using the "Movie Marine" army list for these guys? Honestly I hadn't. Would be fun, but I'd only planned on using them as a standard space marine army. I suppose I could use "all Terminator army" rules but I'm not that keen, especially as the bases are smaller than Terminator's regular bases. The project for me is about being able to put them down on a gaming table and have them look awesome. That simple really. Overall I'm looking at about 45 marines (20 tactical, 10 devastator, 10 assault or veteran and 5 command plus tycho). Then add in a scout squad (possibly scaled up a little), dreadnought, some vehicles, and an inquisitor with a couple of squads of storm troopers just to help highlight their size even more. Gonna take a while, but this is definitely the project for me. I for one can't wait to see what he's got up sleeve with this Top Secret project of his. I should also point out that I wasn't expecting these to have turned out so well, so I'd say just stepping up and having a go is big part of it. It's not actually that difficult to do. Expensive yes, difficult no. Thanks again for the comments. Next up is the squad's heavy weapons guy.
