Brother Tancred
With Black reach almost out I'm starting an ultramarine force. To start I've bought some of the nicest models in the 40k universe, Marneus Calgar and his honour guard. The first model I've done is the free Black Reach termie in White Dwarf as a paint test and put Calgar together. C+C are welcome. Cheers -Callum Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145135-starting-ultramarines/ Share on other sites
nurglespuss
Thats looking cool man :> Always good to see people doing Ultramarines for a change! I like your simple painting style, it looks nice and quick to do? Also, looking at the whte highlights on yor model, and the brown you used for the base/weathering, I would be tempted to buy some GW snow flock, and add some patches of snow (or make your own using sugar/gloss varnish mix). Brother Tancred
Cheers for the support Nurglespuss and I'm glad you like the blue it took me all day painting different styles to get to that one ;) lol but now I can start painting. Finished undercoating Calgar and his Honour Guard so I'll make a start on them  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145135-starting-ultramarines/#findComment-1682406 Share on other sites
Brother Tancred
So I've quickly painted some Mordian Blue on these guys as a base coat before bed, more tomorrow :) Any C+C welcome ^_^ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145135-starting-ultramarines/#findComment-1682467 Share on other sites
Brother Caedrius
A good start so far, I look forward to seeing your progress! The Marneus Calgar set is awesome! I love the helms on his honour guard! I play a DA successor, but damn I want that mini! Might have to convert him and use Marneus as Comapny Master of 1st Co. and use his honour guard for my converted Chapter Master (High Marshal Helbrecht) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145135-starting-ultramarines/#findComment-1682472 Share on other sites
Brother Tancred
Cheers for the comment Brother Caedrius, they really are amazing and would be quite easy to convert with a bit of green stuff work. I've given them a lighter layer and painted their cloaks crimson because I'm doing the 3rd company so will help them fit in with the rest of the army. Any comments welcome. Tiriel
Well, not much to say right now. The highlighting is very good on the blue, by maybe you could shade it a bit in the depths and add a bit of color 'cause right now it looks a bit desaturated (GW asurmen blue? xD). Unless you prefer it this way, which is entirely up to you! The terminator on the other hand, could use a bit more detailing and color, say just a touch of cold silvered-gold, just to suggest a bit of yellow on some decorations, like the leg one and the Crux. Keep up, Ultramarines are the bests! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145135-starting-ultramarines/#findComment-1682922 Share on other sites
wiplash
do you have the inks? if not get them they will save you bags of time liking the paint jobs although the dry brush on the termie was a little heavy Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145135-starting-ultramarines/#findComment-1683325 Share on other sites
Brother Tancred
Thanks for the positive comments and I'm going to make a wash for the white to make it look less powdery. I do have the wash set and already used blue on the armour but think it needs another wash of it or with black to give more depth to them so they don't look so flat. The Emperor's Champion
You have an awfully coppery color there. I suggest Shining Gold and light Mithril Silver highlights to make it shine. Brother Tancred
I haven't finished yet, I did say it was just a base coat. I plan to highlight with shining gold, then a brown wash and then final highlight of shining gold/mithril silver. Thunderclap
They're looking awesome :P Infact... once I've finished my 1000pts DIY chapter, I'm heading straight for 1000pts of Ultras, they just look so sweet :P *gets job to finance increased wishlist* Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145135-starting-ultramarines/#findComment-1684517 Share on other sites
Brother Caedrius
I was so impressed with the Marneus Calgar set in your pics, I had to go out and get my own today! Thanks for the inspiration, and nice to see the models coming along! Brother Tancred
Cheers for the support Thunderclap and Brother Caedrius, I'm glad my work inspires  I've added abit more detail and now I have even more ultramarines, I know have another 5 terminators which have been base coated blue and... ...today I bought the 5 man black reach paint set because I don't have time to buy and paint the big box set get. It also gives me a goal to achieve while doing my last year of A-levels. I had a chaplain to be used in a dark angel kill team but thought he'd be better used as a smerf. Brother Tancred
Hi folks, I don't have pictures yet but have started making Captain Ardius and wanted to know if it was better to paint the detail on his shoulder of model it out of green stuff? I'll try and put some photos of him so far on as well as some more of Calgar's squad ;) please someone replay lol Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145135-starting-ultramarines/#findComment-1687800 Share on other sites
Bigger-than-Jesus
I like your minis, but how did you manage to paint your calgar in one piece? Mine's been barely touched by glue so I can break it all up for painting lol. One suggestion I have is an Asurmen blue wash over your guys' armour, I swear by that(hell, it's how mine are getting done lol) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145135-starting-ultramarines/#findComment-1687825 Share on other sites
Brother Tancred
I've only put the body together, he's not attached to the base or any of the small bits. He's taken awhile but hes almost finished now :pinch: I'll try and post finally pics of him tonight Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145135-starting-ultramarines/#findComment-1687846 Share on other sites
Brother Tancred
Almost finished Calgar, he just needs the cloak touched up and maybe another layer of red and then finish his face. Heres Captain Ardius I've just got to decide if I want the armour shoulder pad on his sword arm or the other. I figured that the studed pad is reinforced with the studs so would protect the captain from the gun getting hot. Bigger-than-Jesus
Fluff-wise BOTH those pads go on the left shoulder. I'd say drop the Deathwatch pad, put the studded one on the opposite shoulder and use an Ultramarine pad on the right, but that's just my way and ultimately it is your model Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145135-starting-ultramarines/#findComment-1687945 Share on other sites
Brother Tancred
Thanks for the post mate but I said in the previous post that I wanted to paint Ardias' hereldry onto it, which is shown in the marine codex. I thought of the Ordo Xenos pad because after taking the "I" of it sort of looks like the old roman gladiator armour. Bigger-than-Jesus
Ah, right, I just put in the suggestion 'cause I've gotten into PH stuff and really deep into the fluff so for some reason looking at non-fluffy suits confuses me lol Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145135-starting-ultramarines/#findComment-1688982 Share on other sites
Brother Tancred
Lol no bother mate I really enjoy fluffy stuff too, especially heresy -_- but the Ordo pad actually does go on that side(shows he's part or been in the deathwatch) but I just thought it'd look cool and more roman/greek origan. Vash113
The studded pad can be on either side depending. The Deathwatch pad goes on the left shoulder, as does the Ultramarines pad. But if you've filed the Inquisitorial seal off of the DW pad it would probably look good on the right with the Ultramarines pad on the left. Brother Tancred
Well instead of the ultramarine pad the captains wear their own personal hereldry on the left pad, Arduis is of a gladius pointing down with a gold letheral around it and the U sign in the centre of the sword. But It would give me something else to paint on the right pad and have the UM pad on the left :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145135-starting-ultramarines/#findComment-1689949 Share on other sites

In Insignium Astartes all 3 Ultramarines captains displayed on pages 38-39 have the Ultramarine symbol first and foremost on the left pad, with their own personal touches in and around it, but their personal heraldry goes on the right pad.
