[ART] Askren's artstuffs. Now with more fiber!

Hey, hey. The name's Askren, but you can call me Askren. I'm new here, but not exactly new to the Warhammer world (got my first starter kit/rulebook in '95), though due to unfortunate circumstances and petty theft, I've long since lost my entire collection. My love for the game, and even more so, the universe behind it didn't die, though, and it's been influencing my art specifically for years. Also, the fact that my new girlfriend is as into 40k as I am helps. ^_^

Anyway, I'm an illustrator by trade, and recently have been churning out Space Marine sketches in droves, so I'll post 'em here if you like.

We'll start with something I did today between classes (and well into Math), which started off as just a Marine study but somehow ended up as a First Company Tyrannic War veteran, though I have yet to give him a name. I'm a die-hard Ultramarine, so they tend to dominate my sketchbook pages.

Whatcha think? C&C always welcome, and the more harsh, the better. =D

Welcome to the B&C! Overall I really like this sketch. The head looks small, which is how I always envisioned it would be compared to the massiveness of power armor. Welcome aboard and I hope to see more!

BTW, maybe your next project could be a Lamenter, no?

When it comes to marines, I've literally seen every adaption and visualization there is, because being an artist, and one that loves Marines, naturally I have a huge collection of Marine art. And of all the different ways of them being portrayed, I tend to steer more towards the tiny-head-huge-body look. I dunno, I just have a thing for epic-ly huge armor that seems like it could take a demolisher shell to the chest and live.

That said, in the works right now are: A color-ified version of the OP sketch, slightly more stylized Marine with a sword/power fist (Ultramarine of course), a pretty epic-looking Marneus Calgar pose, a Black Templar hero Chaplain, and possibly a Slaaneshi championess for my lady. Did I mention she's Chaos?

Anyway, thanks for the kind words. As always, Praise the Immortal Emperor!

EDIT: One Lamenter, coming up.

Yes please show us more, looks good. If I could make one complaint though, its that the head is too small, it looks disproportionate (even for a marine).

Like I said, it's a style I'm drawn too. As a cartoonist, I tend to play with proportions a lot, and drawing Marines let me run wild with them.

Oh, I also forgot, feel free to check my meager DeviantART out at www.askren.deviantart.com. It's got plenty of non-Warhammer stuff as well as whatever ends up here.

I couldn't resist getting to work on Mr. Calgar right away, because the pose is just too epic for words. WIP right now, should have a decently finished version when I get out of class tomorrow.

Also, I forgot I have my birthday present of a squad of Emperor's Children (fekkin' Chaos...) to build and paint, so I can see if my mad painting skillz still hold up after 10 years out of the game.

Wow! Thanks for the support and comments. Seeing people get excited about notebook doodles makes me want to work extra-hard to make some meaningful pieces. And on that note, I'll share what came out of my sketchbook from today in class:

A big, full-marine in-pose that I'm calling Lord Chaplain Virgil, chapter unknown as of yet, though something about him screams Mortifactors.

Next up, Marneus Calgar in full battle pose. This is sorta my take on him, combining elements from old and new models and art of the Chapter Master.

And...who's that handsome Marine? Oh, that's me. Angry Marines. Angry, always.

The pencils are good, proportions dead on. The only thing I could reccomend would be a variance in line weight to emphasize certain elements. Something to make them pop as they feel a bit flat on the page. I like everything but the 'angry marine' never liked anime, and never really will, mostly because of all the kids in my art classes that think they are 'de hubor roxxorz at drawing l33t anime pictures' but couldnt draw a still life if it kicked them in the teeth and stomped on their skulls with ceramite boots and then drew it for them.

Dude, I go to an art college, and that sums up about 90% of the people there ("Oh lolz, I are draw Naruto fanart! I am artist!"), so I know the deal. I don't really consider my cartooning style 'anime', though it's close enough that a lot of people think it's either influenced or based off of anime artists, when in fact it's not at all. Actually, when I decided to start cartooning (I mean like, drawing my own comics that weren't realistic, 'superhero' stuff), I basically started from scratch with no influences, no ideas, or any plan, and just drew. What came out has evolved into that. Now don't get me wrong, every time I draw my cartoon-self, it's different, with things being changed or stylized further, but the overall appearance is sorta what you see there, and on my dA page.

That said, Lord Chaplain Virgil is looking great, even to me, so I hope to have that done soon.

Trust me, crappy cell-phone pictures don't do justice to the other two bad-boys. As soon as I find my fine-tip, I'll start putting some solid lines to 'em so I can scan and color them (with a lot more depth than the cartoon =P)

Finally someone who draws proportional marines!!!

The head looks the right size as well as the armoured arms, they look like they would be able to contain extremely muscled arms and still have armour over for protection.

A very refreshing thing to see for a change :D

Oh lawd, I'm like the worst when it comes to WIP stuff. I have like, 4 pictures in my sketchbook I promised to do, and all of them are in various states of semi-completion. Usually, when I start getting really close to the end of a picture I worked hard on, I move slower and slower and slower, until I'm barely finishing at all, which I guess comes from staring at the same picture for like, 6 days in a row.

Anyway, enjoy this little WIP, the full scan of a cameraphone shot I posted earlier in the thread.

Note, a lot of it isn't done and still needs to be filled in/added. When I color it, I'll add the filigree and designs to the robes and whatnot.

C&C, pl0x!

Really nice, there is some inconcistencies with the last one though, it is a REALLY nice piece of artwork, but the tube-things don't meassure up... One is taller then the other, and even if that is intentional, they seem fitted on the shoulderpads, in which case the left one's topside should face away from us rather then towards us...beyond that, I got nothing but praise for these!

I know. I inked that on my lap rather than a flat surface, and it ended up weird. I saw it right after and slapped my forehead. That, and a few other places I intend to edit in Photoshop when it gets around to being colored.

The only one on this page that really works for me is the chaplain

In the original phone pic you show it looks a little strange; the purity seals sit awkwardly and there's very little to see otherwise, but the most recent rendering you posted looks great, my only suggestion would be to make the crozius seem thicker - at the moment the wings look beefy but the body of the eagle looks 2D.

The Marneus Calgar one, such as the picture communicates, is a great cartoon depiction, but then I find there's only so much you can get from a cartoon drawing without several frames, dialogue or some form of narrative. The stylistic choices you've made, which work for the chaplain, seem to compromise the spirit of the subject in this case, as with the first picture you show. The proportions seem strange and disjointed

In the first picture, look at the size of his forearms compared to the width of his bolter. The size of the chainsword compared to the fore-shoulder pad. If you follow the line up from his groin armour, his stomach armour seems too far set-back, but follow the line of his abdomen up and his chest armour seems too far set back. Overall you get the impression that he is wider around his middle than his chest. And his head really is too small. Given that the human head roughly fits into the torso 4 times, even with all the steroids, surgery and physical demands the astartes body is put through, as large as he gets this ratio is not going to change a huge amount. The head will grow proportionate to the rest of the body. Not much, but enough.

I don't want to get fluffy and uber-technical, especially as these are cartoon depictions, but I feel that overall - this applies to the first pic more than of Calgar - it doesn't feel like a space marine. It looks like it could just as feasibly be 3 children standing on each other's shoulders operating a robot suit.

But nor do I want to get too critical :) with the first pic, I think if you enlarged the head a little, narrowed the waist and lowered it a fraction, and fixed the bolter, it'd look awesome :tu: The calgar pic just needs a couple of details emphasising - put a bit more weight into the lines of his fore-powerfist and the leather-braided tabard to bring them forward and add a bit of depth, and fix his right shoudler pad (is that the corner of a banner? If so the shoulder pad could do with widening) - and he could look just as awesome :)
